...and THAT is the Madison Keys who was projected to be a serious heir to Serena Williams 10 years ago. Her scalding forehand pace and potent serve have always been in her arsenal but putting it together consistently has proven challenging. Nevertheless, she has won 63.5% of all her matches and 8 titles, with one major final appearance. She never dropped a set in Strasbourg this past week, and dominating Collins here was tres impressive!

Amazing play by Keys! Although I’m quite worried about Collins, her first two matches here were perfect, but yesterday her first set against Kalinina was not her best with many unforced errors, and here today she couldn’t land one backhand in play which is supposed to be her best shot…. Just by looking at her face in the first game, I can tell how she's feeling and how she's going to play. Collins made everything easy for Keys today. In the last three important matches, against Sabalenka and Keys, when her partner was there, she always lost. He should have stayed home.

It's not easy to put a name to what is going on here and why Collins was so overwhelmed. Only she knows what it looks like on the other side of that net. But it would appear that Key's accurate and deep ball striking, and especially the pace, are causing the problems. At least a couple of times I thought Collins might have tried to wrong-foot Keys rather than doing the predictable shot to the other side of the court (where Keys wasn't). That choice has been working for Collins but not against Keys. Keys had no problem reaching these kinds of balls and striking them for winners (with again that pace, accuracy and depth). I don't think Keys is *always* this good. Interestingly, Collins tried to give Keys fewer flat balls by hitting more loopy shots, which she correctly assumed would be more difficult for Keys to T-off on with her powerful forehand. But it wasn't enough. You can't really get through an entire match like that. But clearly she bought herself a few points by employing these tactics. Best player on the day won.
