Dangers of Using Electronics in Bathroom, the Case of the Teenage Girl

This is the sad tragedy of the teenage girl, Madison Coe, who passed away while using her mobile phone in the bathroom. I hope her story provides awareness around the dangers of using electronics in the bathroom.

No point in making a video - he'd casually use his burnt hand until someone in the comments asks "Cody, what did you do to your hand? You have to look after yourself!". To which he'd stoically reply with "Just burnt myself while touching a few thousand volt apparatus".

When I was a kid it was drummed into me that I should never switch anything on or off with wet hands. Water and electricity didn't mix. In the UK no socket is allowed within 3 metres of a bath or shower, using an extension lead defeats the object.

Likewise, also from the UK, and I am teaching my kid the same. I never take my phone into the bathroom when having a shower, I leave it in my bedroom and take a bluetooth speaker in instead ;) The music sounds better that way too.

Per report: "she plugged her cell phone into an extension cord, which was plugged into a non-GFCI, non-grounded bathroom wall outlet.". A GFCI outlet senses if the current is drawn from the outlet that is passing through unwanted electrical paths, like through plumbing and such and would shut down the power quickly. This would also save girl's life. It is funny in my apartment, one bathroom has GFCI outlet and the other one doesn't! It is one of the essential things to have in a bathroom.

Yea, pretty sad... The houseowners should've re-wired the bathroom with proper GFCI outlets, or if that would've been too expensive - they should've just permanently disabled (removed the receptacles and covered them with blank cover plates) all non-GFCI outlets. So it's partially their fault that this tragedy happened.

I never realized that European (German?) plugs are safe by design. The sockets go a few cm into the wall and the plugs exactly fit into them. So when the plug makes contact with the socket, it already covers the sunk socket with itself and you can't touch the contacts because the plug is in the way. Genius.

You're great for making these videos. It amazes me sometimes how little knowledge most people have on how dangerous and potentially deadly electricity can be. It's easy to take it for granted because it's just everywhere and for the most part no one has to deal with it. But rare circumstances arise like this girl's case. If school teachers didn't go around teaching students dumb shit like "volts jolt current kills" and actually taught legitimate electrical safety then things like this would be even more rare than they already are. And they do get more and more rare as the years go by. Which is great but tragedies do still happen and only by taking proactive steps (like pushing the U.S. to change outlet styles. Thanks for that we really need it to happen) can we prevent them completely.

UK plugs have additional safety on the socket, too - the live and neutral slots have a gate protecting them which is only opened by pushing the plug in. Avoids any mishaps when you don't even have something plugged in.

UK and EU plugs had better contain more safety features because the AC voltage at wall outlets is double that of USA and Canada. It's pretty hard to seriously hurt yourself with 120 VAC. You have to really be wet with a good path to ground that travels through your chest (heart). Double the voltage and the risk increases dramatically.

Pretty sure NEC updated to require everything be GFCI or Arc Fault Protected (don't have my code book next to me but it's in there.) Out here in Vegas however they've (building departments) been allowing people to replace with whatever it was built with, at least at the electrical panel. If the home was built with regular breakers you can replace with regular breaker. Also depending if she's getting electrocuted through ground or not, depends if a GFCI would even trip. If the tub isn't grounded and she were using one of those shitty old piece of crap cords with no ground it's entirely possible the GFCI wouldn't have even tripped. Maybe I'm wrong on how GFCI's and even arc faults work but they trip when the current leaving isn't the same as the current being returned on the neutral. If you're getting shocked through neutral instead of ground, it probably wouldn't even cause the GFCI to trip.

If you look at it frame by frame, you see that both leads actually spark when they touched each of his hands, meaning that current definitely did pass through his heart. However it was only for a fraction of a second as the two leads then touched each other and his wires disconnected. Additionally, the sparklers probably provided some resistance and so he may no have gotten the full 2 amps across his chest. Either way, it would have killed him if he held onto for any longer, and he is really lucky.

Worth noting, rice is not a good desiccant to use. It's best to let it air dry if you don't have any better desiccants (such as those silica gel packs). Rice can actually damage the phone further, I know firsthand. Everything else it correct though. Turn off your phone IMMEDIATELY, shake water out, and take the battery out if possible. And do not turn the phone back on until all the water is gone. If you're not sure, best to leave it.

GFCI!! Mehdi, please comment and pin it to the top recommending GFCI. A GFCI wall outlet installed in the bathroom circuit, like it is called for by most modern codes, might have been all that was needed to save the girl's life. Please, install GFCI outlets or breakers wherever possible.

That's why in Europe it's mandatory to have GFCI protection at the breaker panel (for the whole house), and sometimes a separate, high sensitivity (10mA) GFCI for the bathroom. That way, even if she plugged the extension cord outside the bathroom, she would still be protected by the breaker panel GFCI.

There is very high probability that GFCI would help, especially alongside exposed earth wiring like in Schuko sockets; but it's not certain - after all, if the current happens to return via neutral wire rather than via a stray pipe or ground contact, it won't trip. When it trips, it does so within perhaps 20ms, but rarely in less than 10ms, but that too can sometimes already be lethal.

  • @JoeyRodz74

    @JoeyRodz74

    7 жыл бұрын

I agree and that's why I said it "might have" saved the girl's life. You don't get electrocuted if current just flow through one hand. From the report, it looks like she grabbed the frayed extension cord and while being wet/barefoot, the circuit was made through her body - from her hand to her feet. A GFCI outlet/breaker would have caught that because more than a few mA flowed to ground instead of through neutral/return.

Also, the earth pin connects first (except some cheap foreign knockoffs which sleeve the earth pin as well, whichsort of defeats the object). Great channel BTW

Thanks the the PSA Mehdi. I'm amazed that in the US with people so ready to sue each other, that safer plugs are not mandatory. The UK have safety plugs like you demonstrated where the live and neutral are partly sheathed. Unfortunately some foreign imports don't implement the regulations correctly and sheath the earth pin too. So when the plug is pushed into the socket the earth pin is actually disconnected from the socket, as the earth connection is located at the front of the socket, so as to earth the device before the power is connected.

Same. We were working on our power supplies in EE class. I wanted to check how my neighbour wired up the switch, so I pulled some wires aside to get a closer look at the connections. Brzzzz. I just didn't assume that someone would leave a 230V device unattended when it's still connected to the mains WHILE THE CASE IS OPEN. Fortunately we had circuit breakers on every work bench. That was an "exciting" experience. Also, it kicked out the circuit breaker of the whole room and everyone in class was stunned by the situation for a moment.

the problem is not that she accidentally touched an exposed wire, but that this happened while she was taking bath. I mean, you dont have to be particularly smart to know that electricity and water together can be dangerous. Couldn't she leave the phone for 20 minutes?

So ... this beautiful young lady was lost just that she didn't know about the naked conductor? What a sad story! This makes me feel more sad about her ... we've just lost a young soul for no reason! Where is her parents? Did they teach their daughter on how to be careful towards these serious dangerous stuff? Did they notify her about the danger the energy sources could cause to humans? I'm really feeling sad about her ... I hope that everyone will care more about her sad story and think carefully about it ... 😢 REST IN PEACE 😭😭😭

Mehdi, have you ever seen the Brazilian plug standard? not only is the wall outlet recessed into the wall, the plug has the plastic sleeve on 2/3s of it's there lugs. While the introduction of the standard was surrounded by talks of big industry trying to cash in via a deal with the government, I still think it's a smarter and safer design than the US standard, and with a lower profile than the European standard.

It's similar to what they use in Italy and Switzerland. Seems to be derived from Europlug, that we use for our low-current, double insulated devices across most of Europe, which was designed to fit a dozen of different national sockets with various pin distances, and some having the recess and some not having it. Because it doesn't need to actually account for different sockets but may need to be used for higher current, your variant uses thicker pins and removes the polymer spring and converging geometry elements of the Europlug design. Europlug doesn't offer the electrical safety of having a ground, but it has excessive mechanical safety, with two mechanisms which would not be needed together, but may not be present individually: the sheathing on pins is designed to protect you when you use non-recessed sockets of some countries, while the Europlug sockets are recessed to prevent people from forcing a plug into them that doesn't have sheathing, or a plug of a device that needs to be grounded for safety into an ungrounded extension. Why Brazil went for both, i frankly can't see: a recessed socket doesn't need sheathed pins.

Bjorn Roesbeke she touched the frayed extension cord, so the current went from hot to neutral, not to earth ground, so a RCD wouldn't help... but that shouldn't be deadly, some current needs to flow through the heart and into earth, so they probably didn't have an RCD installed.

Teth47 In developed countries (Germany for example) RCDs are ubiquitous. They are necessary for 'wet' areas, and for new buildings, everything has to be protected by one. They're cheap enough

Hey, rice works good and all, but if you really want something to "suck" the water out of your phone, you should try to find a local source of desiccant. Salt, Lye, Calcium chloride, and many other such chemicals can absorb water from the air and within materials, allowing things to dry faster. It would also help if you could increase the surface area exposed near the dessicant. You dont have to put the phone IN the dessicant, just put it close. If you could get a bowl full and put the phone on top of the pile, ir hang it above.
