Dangers of Hybrid Publishing and Scam Publishers

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In 2022, there are many ways to publish a book. You no longer have to try getting a book deal from a Big Five publisher or put in the work yourself via self publishing-you could also seek out a hybrid publisher. Hybrid publishing is a newer form of getting your book into the world, and recently a report came out from the Society of Authors and the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain highlighting the potential dangers of working with hybrid publishers. In this video, I summarize the key points of this report to help you understand what to expect when working with a hybrid publisher.

I thought about it and submitted to 4 different ones. They all claimed to be VERY strict on who they published. They said only 10% of people actually make it through, but they LOVED my story and my book and wanted to sign me right away! I was skeptical because nothing comes that easily for me. So I did more research and decided against it. I am now killing my darlings in that same book because it needed more edits. Lol 😅

As an editor who is interested in diving into publishing, this is great information. If I were to be a hybrid publisher, I would allow the author to keep the rights to their work, only charge for book covers, marketing/platforms they wish to use. I would provide all levels of editing and formatting for free. Whatever royalties they earn from sales, they would keep. I would make it clear that there is no guarantee of the work not being a bestseller, or be available in all bookstores. Some of us do want to see authors genuinely succeed.

I would never sign a contract that involved giving up my rights. I fail to understand why anyone would. What you are proposing falls within self publishing services rather than hybrid. Going under that banner avoids the baggage that comes with hybrid.

I almost fell for one of these when I was writing my novel. In some ways it was a little bit of a vanity project in that I wrote it mostly for myself to get through a tough spot in my life and I just wanted to learn how to get it out for others to possibly enjoy. I didn't know about self publishing yet and traditional publishing wasn't really giving me the time of day to even reject me. The marketing from one of these "hybrid publishers" was insanely aggressive. They wanted a thousand dollars to publish me which probably wasn't terrible if the editing, cover design, and book distribution were of decent quality. They actually sort of shot themselves in the foot because thy boasted about their high rating on the Better Business Bureau so I looked them up and found literally hundreds of people writing scathing complaints about them with every response from the vanity publisher being how the customer/author was somehow wrong or there was simply a misunderstanding and the case was closed. Needless to say I immediately ghosted them and eventually found Amazon KDP. I wouldn't say I've struck gold going the self publishing route by any means but I am very glad I did not get caught up with that company. It was also kind of fun to learn about how to do certain things like buy ISBNs, format a book, design a cover, etc.

Hello Derek your comment was interesting. I’ve gone down a different route. I’ve found a really good self publisher. It’s rather expensive but their quality of work is fabulous. They also do a rather fun one minute animated cartoon to go with your book if it’s a childrens book. This is included in their deal. I did the research on self publishers before I found the right one. I’ve now published five books in less than a year with them. My next step was to hire a PR marketing company. If you look up my name you’ll find my books.

First clue it was a scam is that it would never cost only $1000.00 for a good publisher's services. Never happen. Try at least 5-10,000 dollars.

Thanks, Alyssa. One thing I'm curious about is statistics for self-publishers, particularly sales statistics. I do know this is going to vary wildly depending on the author's platform, marketing effort, and (I hope) the investment they put into editing. I find it difficult to determine what is a reasonable investment in a first book, where self-publishing is always an option if traditional publishing doesn't work out. I know this is a complex topic. After all, even I have not worked this out. I'd appreciate any insight you may have. As for hybrid publishing, I do think there is a spot in the marketplace for someone to honestly bundle editing, publishing, and marketing services together and sell these in a flexible package, providing legitimate help to authors who lack business savvy. Instead, it seems like many describing themselves as hybrid publishers are repackaged vanity publishers, and that's unfortunate. Perhaps we abandoned tarring and feathering too early.

Thanks for the video, it was very informative. I've been writing for years, since I was a child, and I finally decided and managed to get my book published in December, after months of working with a company to get it published. I have to say that I wished that I'd seen this video a couple of years ago. After watching this video I must say that I got this really sick feeling in my stomach, because it described my dealings with a "certain" publishing company to a t. Come to find out that I was working with a vanity press. I was so desperate to get my book published before the passing of my then terminally ill grandmother, that I didn't do the proper research into the company. I was so happy to be approached that I told myself that I was getting an amazing deal after reading the pamphlet. I coughed up the $1,500 to publish my book without further thought, thinking this was normal since I had no prior knowledge of what traditional publishing was. Even though my work is out, there has been no aggressive promoting of my book unless I paid extra on top of the monthly installments I was already making. I pretty much had to do it all myself. I see now where I went wrong and will take this as a learning experience. Thankfully, I own all the rights to my book. Hopefully, when my contract is up in May of 2023, I can begin the process of republishing my book the proper way. Speaking of which, do you think that you could make a video on republishing an already published book?

Thanks for shedding light on this. I came across one of these "hybrid" publishers. It all sounded good, of course. But then when they told me their services would cost between $4,000.00-$8,000.00, I realized I might as well self-publish as you mentioned in the video. The problem is since you have to pay all this money 💰 up front, there's literally no incentive for them to work for you to sell your book! Their marketing services costs money too, therefore, if you sell 0 books, they've already made their money from you. I usually stop just short of calling it a scam (it's fee-for-service which is a valid business model), but in my opinion hybrid publishing is just a euphemism for vanity press! I believe traditional or self publish. 😉

I wish I had seen this video 8 months ago before I signed up with MindStir media... 3 months into the project, they sent me a couple of edited suggestion out of the whole 260+ pages of my manuscript, so I ended up doing all the editing myself. The designers were not good to the point that I designed my own book cover. Formatting is done so badly that I could've done a better job myself without any experience in formatting.... and I'm still not sure when my book will be ready to finally get to the final printing phase! And of course, if I ever get to being published, I'll be making nothing. They claim that the whole process takes 90 days and the authors just sit back and let them do the work...NOT! This past 8 months have been nothing but disaster, disappointment, and regret for me.

If you could further clarify what "hybrid publishing" means, I would appreciate it. Several years ago I heard about a service offered by a traditional publisher in which an author could pay to have their book produced (and presumably marketed) by that publisher, for a fee. (I don't want to mention the name of the publisher here, but I will say that the "parent" company is now owned by Harper Collins) The company used the clout of their traditional publishing arm to convince authors to sign on with them This was SLIGHTLY different from a typical vanity press because it presumably carried the benefits of working with a large publishing house. (And also the credibility.) Is this where the confusion come in and why the company is called a "hybrid publisher?" Other people have commented that "hybrid publishing" is what authors do who are published both traditionally and independently. (I fit that category and call myself a "hybrid author.")

I don't understand why people are calling vanity publishers 'hybrid publishers'. Hybrid means traditionally published for some books, and self published for others. There are other services that I don't think really count as vanity publishers. Things that sort of gather helpful resources -- cover designers, editors, formatters, etc. in once place and cater to indie authors. If they are honest about what they are, you know you're paying for a service and not publishing a book. The problem is when they also take your rights and make promises.

It's not people, it's the vanity publishers migrating to that designation, to exploit the ambiguity/positive association with the "hybrid author" designation (which is a perfectly legitimate situation where an author just happens to have some of their books with (a) traditional publisher(s) and other self-published ones).

One of the owners I contacted said they need a big cut of the royalties cause it motivates them more to sell my book (not to mention the upfront pay I should give them of 8K pounds). Also searching their social platforms like instagram and facebook and the funny thing is that my own instagram has more followers than their site, also their youtube is dead, no activity for 3 years. Their 'marketing' as I would pay for is simply making an instagram post about a book that gets 2 views. So yeah it really seems like a bunch of lazy people just wanting to scam.

This is certainly helpful but seems like a plug for the status quo. Sure, you have to be careful about predatory behavior, but take into consideration some realities of traditional publishing. First, if you get a literary agent (95% of writers don't), they take between 10-20% of author deals upfront if they sell your work to a publisher. Then, most new authors pay about 90% of the book's cost to the publisher, sign away all rights (editorial and otherwise), and reimburse the publisher for any advance before retaining any kind of profit. Regarding book sale venues, it's up to the author to go above and beyond the agreement and get out to hawk their book to bookstores, look for press reviews, and secure endorsements. The publishing landscape is changing like everything else on Earth, and there are ways to get published that are filling the space created by that change. It is up to the author to figure out what is best for him/her but also to face the reality that they are as likely to become wealthy from publishing as they are from winning the lottery. The goal is to birth the child you've cultivated, and if hybrid publishing is one of these ways, give it its due course.

There’s only one path to take. You have to self publish. Looking for agents is a complete waste of time. You have to make sure that retain all rights to your work. The publisher that I use clearly lay out the costs. Once accepted, the ask for 25% as first instalment. Second phase they ask for 50% by this payment you’ll have a good look at the work that they’ve done on the editing. You don’t pay anything until you’ve 100% happy . Final payment will be when you have accepted the front cover that they have designed. I’m on my fifth book and I’m 100% happy. The only problem is marketing. This will be up to you, No book will have any chance of success unless it’s marketed. I hired a P R marketing company to promote the books. This eliminates these useless agents. I’ve come to the conclusion that these agents are protecting their own clientele. By rejecting everything that comes close to their own published authors. Good luck to all you budding authors, don’t let these people stop you from fulfilling your dream. Sometimes it doesn’t matter about the money, it’s your own satisfaction that counts. Once published you’ll always be know as an ‘author’

My cousin actually send her book to “hybrid publishing” they accepted her book and she actually paid them 3000 dollars for them to “publish “ her book. Okay well if they accepted it? Why pay for it? Anyway just lots of things don’t make sense with it. Like her manuscript, they are doing. She only has to approve it. Like I thought you had to do your own manuscript for self and traditional publishing.. scammers these days

Wise move. I had one attempt to have me get a $10K loan for publishing/marketing.

I don't like calling these publishers "hybrid" publishers. It just sounds as though vanity publishers are trying to rebrand themselves in order to scam more unsuspecting authors. Prior to watching this video, every time I had heard the term hybrid publishing it had been in reference to authors who both independently publish some of their books and traditionally publish others.

There are no hybrid publishers. There is hybrid publishing and there are scams (e.g. vanity publishers). Hybrid publishING is when an author chooses traditional publishing for one book or series and self publishing for another book or series, for whatever reason.

Actually you are wrong. Hybrid publishing is when a company does all the marketing, design, etc for a price.

What I hate about this type of videos is that she just kept yapping and yapping for 6 minutes about how she’s going to tell me what I already put down in the search box. It’s like, b, get to the fing point!!!!
