Dangers lurk in the waters of Lake Lanier

As thousands of Georgians hit Atlanta’s favorite lake this holiday, they may be unaware of the dangers below the surface.

    There’s a town under the lake where I live here in Mississippi too. It used to just be a beautiful river valley. Government damned it up and ruined the whole area. I guess not totally. Now we have a lake with gas and other pollutants to swim in.

    The only thing it has going for is a “scary”backstory. Since 1994 there have only been 147 drownings, which is very low when you consider that it has 11 million annual visitors. It’s a very sad story, but can we stop pretending that there’s ghosts in the fucking lake?

    Agreed, however if the owner is unable, then just let it sit there? How would you solve the problem? I can’t think of anything other than possible HOA fees being allocated for such purpose, or tax money (and I absolutely HATE HOA’s). I could see some volunteers helping out every now and again, though they aren’t going to do 15 grand worth of work for free more times than once, if at all. In the case of the woman who doesn’t have the money, she’s not just going to walk out to her money tree and pluck a ripe 15 grand off of it.

  • @GodBlessedAmerica

    @GodBlessedAmerica

    P-Wigs In my opinion, if the boat owner can’t afford to have it removed, then they should surrender ownership. Just my opinion. Yes, HOA 😡 I agree. Some local people could have a recovery business. If owner surrenders title it’s the businesses right to sell it , part it out etc.... The owners are basically harming the environment and trashing a lake. Again, just my opinion. 🇺🇸

    Believe it or not in the mid 90's both full size Pacu and Piranha were pulled outta the lake. If I remember correctly it wasn't the red belly, but it bigger meat eating cousin. This was also not the first time, and you could buy Piranha in Tennessee. I think in most cases it was ruled as dumped fish and not some strain able to survive the Central Georgia winter's. There's also Spotted Gar in lake Lanier that are huge. We ran in to a few that were more than half the size of a 16ft bass boat. There's been a rumour of a Alligator for several years now. Even seen some pics people put up. If true he's between 5&7ft. Got a friend that regularly dives Lanier, he's says he's never seen anything that shouldn't be there. Just huge Gar and Stripper's, no Gators, or schools of piranha.

    NO. Lake was formed in the 1950's. area used to be farmland. There had been a dirt race track too. There were structures still standing when the area was dammed up & a lake was formed. People diving often hit things under the surface. Quite a few people have died because of what's under the water.

    It is not as bad as this report makes it sound. I lived practically on the lake for 3 years and spent a lot of time out there "exploring". I did not see a single sunken boat or detached dock. But... having nothing to do with man made hazards, any lake has to be watched for harmful bacteria growth. A large body such as Lanier can have pools around the coves that don't circulate well, are not tested and be really bad.

    A boat is a luxury, not a privilege. All boat sales even used boat resales should have a surcharge for abandonment. Any owners found to have negligently left their boats should be charged for the removal. The monetary and environmental cost become greater with time. Sometimes you have to legislate and tax behavior to control it. Otherwise people will do whatever the hell they want.

    @B W trump has clearly shown his disdain for environmental issues. We can't return to the age of the horses but neither can we hide our heads in the sand, but the next generation may not have the luxury of time in which to consider the ramifications. No is not an answer, anybody who thinks it is, is clearly as stupid as the anti president himself. When you set yourself to sea in a sieve don't be surprised when you sink. Thomas Jefferson was of the opinion that the heart must take charge of the head in matters of the nation.
