It's probably saved my life before. Honestly, I need to review before cutting again. Think about leaving that segment in your other video. It might save a life. Always enjoy your videos .

Your first 20 words prove without a doubt that your integrity is impeccable. Grew up in Nassau County, Florida (Georgia and Florida line on the Atlantic Coast). Therefore your Southern dialect is no problem with me. Where I grew up Pines Trees are king, there are two major Paper Mills that operate 24/7/265 in Nassau County, Florida on Amelia Island, and the third one in St. Mary's, Georgia. Imagine the appetite of these three paper mills. growing up there in the '60s and 70's many of the residents of the community which I grew up in worked as Loggers (for you Southerns this means they worked in the Pulpwood). I recalled several deaths as a child when falling trees during their harvest actually killed workers, Try cutting the back cut at a slight angle, it works for me. Keep this thought in the back of your head at all times, "This tree is not my friend and I'm going to watch it every second until it's on the ground." Harvesting Southern Pines techniques has made some real progress since the 1950s. Be safe out there. Logging has come a long way, even for the homeowner. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIeouquveqq_eLg.html

I was an urban tree trimmer/feller for 15 years, and did a lot of demo/removal work. Always knowing your escape route is critical. We used a lot of ropes to sometimes control the direction, but even then things can go awry. The man who wrote the bible of tree removal and felling ended up dying in a tree removal. He was in a bucket lift 40' to 50' away from the work, and the tree twisted and hit the arm of the lift.... Tree work should never be taken lightly. Glad you survived, and thanks for sharing!

Really good video glad you posted it as this is something that gets a lot of amature in trouble. But don't feel bad this on occasion even happens to us professionals. When cutting as much as we do and you got a lot of equipment running here and there. We can get distracted and this does happen but you did good just shake it off and keep on making saw dust. The lessons learned only go to make you more diligent and a better feller.

Glad you're safe and well. Thanks for sharing your real life lesson learned. Hopefully someone will learn from it, rather than the hard way. I've picked up a lot from Buckin Bill Ray as well on tree cutting. He almost always cuts a pretty generous notch (usually a humboldt), and is usually almost OCD about lining up his back-cut direction, sighting down the perpendicular lines on the saw cover and checking the far side multiple times per cut. Look forward to more real videos.

After seeing the pine on the ground, it looks like she had a slight lean towards the fence. that lean, the lack of hingewood and the very shallow notch all contributed in the tree going in the unintended direction. Thanks for sharing this, please take your time and be safe guys: make nice open face cuts that don't close too early and risk breaking the hingewood. cut at least 1/3 into the log for your face cut and always try to leave a good inch or two of holding wood. use wedges if you can. often times we'll use a pull line just for added security even when not neccessary.

  • @1herbert100

It looked to me that the tree was leaning the way it fell. Also it looked heavey on the side it fell on also. Anyway, you did the one thing you needed to do, you left yourself a way of escape. God Bless.

Hard to teach them when there's multi thousand pounds of wood standing above you in tree form. I asked him what you did right and he said "Dropped everything and hauled butt." Glad the only thing that got hurt was the pride.

I had this conversation with a saw customer yesterday, he has a circular sawmill and falls wood to feed it. I'm going to send him a link to this video. I was describing to him how to bore cut behind the notch and then cut to the back side. Useful in falling heart rotted trees without barber chairing it. I guess the L65 survived, I heard it idling after the trunk was down. Call me and we will talk about a new saw. In a pinch horse power, chain speed and a really sharp chain can save the day. I'm so thankful you are ok!

Ya know. I am a landscaper and not an arborist, but I fell large trees from time to time. When Every I get those jobs, I like to watch youtube videos of people fucking up, which brought me here. You mentioned that the notch depth was a "secondary" issue. I am certain, though, it was the primary issue. The notch depth must be 30-40% of the caliper. Less than that, any minor lean will rip the holding wood in the direction of the lean. Just wanted to put that out there. I'm glad you're safe.

I'd say a huge lesson I learn on a regular basis is to take my time and be alert. If you give your mind time to process everything and pay attention you can usually walk away from the near misses unharmed. You can call it god's grace but that's not giving yourself enough credit. Careless maybe but focused yes and that's a big part of making it through every day with all your fingers and toes. Don't beat yourself up and thanks for posting.
