What no one has commented on yet is that this is a burl tree trunk. The grain of a regular tree, perhaps maple or oak, twists and contorts the usually straight grain of the wood into tight curls and bulbous shapes, becoming extremely hard and dense and unpredictable. Burl wood is highly sought after as it doesn't occur too often in nature, and that burned trunk shown at the beginning could be worth thousands of dollars, even with being burnt. If you look up burl wood turning, you will see that the goal isn't about the utulitarian use of the finished piece, but rather how the craftsman can bring out the beauty of the grain and the burl patterns. The contrast between the original wood and the carved, polished parts is what the ideal ending should contain. The carver must constantly adjust how to work the wood as the grain changes without warning, making the cutting difficult to control. It takes a high level of skill to work with burl wood, and leaving the "live edge" is a very much desired feature. Just because this piece may never hold water as a vase does not hurt its value.

@@randyroehm6921 That few people seem to appreciate how difficult working with burl wood can be, and that is a very different aesthetic, based on bringing out the beauty of the burl and not how 'useful' a piece may be.

Oh wow. Your eye is amazing and your art is one of a kind. I could see how you saw something much deeper than the surface as soon as the video started and I saw the grain on the top end. It's amazing--I love working with wood and love to restore but this is just amazing. I do have to say that you made me a little nervous when you were doing your tool work 😂. Keep up the beautiful work. I am so glad when I see others who fall in love with the different grains of wood, hidden from the surface. ❤ Way to go!

So much effort and time put into it. It still looks like a burn piece of art. I felt it is not worth the time and effort with the end results. Create something else will be more meaningful. Very Sorry! Hope to see something more meaningful in the future. Thank you for the effort.

By meaningful, do you mean utilitarian? Obvious? Standard? The beauty of this piece is its contrasts and contradictions, the smooth and the gnarled, the polished and the burned. Many understand that such inherently and diametrically opposed components creating mesmerizing beauty in their singular existence to be the very definition of meaningfulness
