The largest "bug" in revit. No autosave!

I solve it in the following way: I create parts from all the walls. Then make a "parts schedule" (select "parts" category after "material takeoff") This method gives a correct calculation And in the properties of the view do not forget to disable "parts visibilty" so that the geometry is not duplicated on view

that's not a solution, that's a workaround. The solution is for autodesk to take their product seriously and have a really good look at it.

The best solution is to simply call your calculation "Indicative Area". Plus the builders and even quantity surveyors will add 10% or so anyways 😂

Nice tip... In most situations, volumes are more reliable than areas... And it's possible to convert volumes to areas with a bit of formulas..

side note: cuts, culls, and waste are also factors at corners. Post scheduling, For actual construction of the walls, consider order the sheathing, brick, etc. to the corner volumes - not to run out of materials.

there are also bugs with steel connections in revit Like if you connect the top end of i column with i beam with a clip connection it will create illogical connection, with bolts and plates connected at top of beam in air.

It's a nice attempt to highlight this issue to the developers, yes we faced this issue but ignored it bcoz it is overlapping some material, for the ordering material we always consider some percentage as wastage, so this is not affecting the quantity so much.

It seems to me that it is ‘more’ accurate as is. Where wall joins us where you will have higher material waste So a straight flat wall will have much less waste than a zig zag wall of the same length. So in practice the default material takes off will be closer to reality than your fix.

Schedule your wall in parts(materials)...every software has blind spots even though Revit is so expensive but that's also why the word development exists.

Might be the solution, depends on situation. Possible problems: 1. If all project walls all are turned to parts, this might be problematic for Revit to handle the quantity load? 2. Parts needs further tweaking to report correct areas. My conclusion: Large project - just use "estimated values" (having most walls length on average 10+ metres length should provide about les then 2% discrapancy). Even discrepancy could be calculated analizing wall materials & wall lengths. Small Projects: use parts.

This problem is constant since Revit 2014 (as far as I know), it seems they are not doing anything to address this issue.

Make the wall 1 m high and it will be easier to count)

i checked it some time ago, and i found that the length used for the calculations changed with the grip of the walls, independent of the cut type you used on the corners. Even with one-layer walls, the length is somehow always wrong. Using different walls for different layers for now.

Around 7:30 I was thinking, won’t the areas still overlap with adjoining walls? For example, the air layers in your example would double count area where they meet.

I would not characterize this as a bug, but "as designed" the calculation is somewhat abstracted and based on a planar wall. The calculation is abstracted for the sake of speed and an easily implemented rules for almost every possible wall join/configuration. You can easily imagine wall conditions with multiple wall types coming together at multiple angles making joints quite complicated. Getting a truly "accurate" takeoff could become quite challenging and in most cases would not matter all that much since materials are ordered by the palette full, not by the individual brick.

does this effect all structural elements? (beams, joist, etc...)

is there even a way to get a list that shows comprehensively how the values are calculated? That would be needed to legally use the values here. In regards to how everything in Germany has some special rules of how it has to be calculated... Revit just does not work. Maybe there are 400 workarounds and plug-ins that would make it usable.. but out of the box all the numbers are worthless for what I have to calculate. Even something as simple as the living area below sloped roofs is a deal breaker... which undermines the entire BIM aspect

Hallo Balkan, the solution to the bug is to create parts of your walls and the use a material takeoff PARTS. That will give you the correct quantifies, you can then those to displays THE PARTS or just the original in your model, check it and let me know if you agree, if you don't understand, I will send you a video on it. After years and years experience Revit users don't use PARTS, why ? Re-schedule and you will see.

Have somebody some advice how to start my career after graduation as BIM engineer or pipe design engineer? It’s too difficult

When I model in place component's for my roof trusses and mirror on on a grid point and use reference lines to check placement of mirror and it is slightly off every time. I have spent hours re drawing and remeasuring just to have the same issues. This is sad, and has caused multiple hours of rework for this client. #autodesk needs to make right free software for everyone who has already worked in Revit 2023.

Yes, it works in Revit 2023. There is also an update to the course that includes explanations of some of the new features! :)

It is actually designed to work like that (or in other words: it is not designed to have accurate quantities at joints), so it is not actually a bug (it is a known thing) as mutch as the fact that revit sucks

I completely understand making a video like this. It is impossible to get Autodesk to fix things and many companies. I think it has to do with arrogance that they are the designer and you are some peon that pays them money when they demand.

If you put a Window ore a door in the wall it will not subscribe the area of the door ore window. So yes revit is bad at calculating areas.

Most probably compatibility issues. Revit is some dinosaur software that is not backwards compatible with its own files.

@@simonk.2969 Files are updated the first time you open them in the new version, just like any other software. I would bet that Balkan Architect would disagree that Revit is a dinosaur software, as would many others.

@@MJK0627 I said backward compatibility and not forward compatibility. As in you cannot open a 2021 in 2020. And the basic functions of revit like file management are dinosaur.

It will be problem if only you use lastest version. While other consultants or people want to access ur file but they can't.

Yes, it's because of compatibility issues. I share my project files on my Patreon page. I I used Revit 2023, my patrons that are using earlier versions would not be able to open those files. This is why I always stay a few versions behind. :)

Mr Balkan Architect, I really like the way you take your time to teach. I was just thinking aloud whether you can do visualization with vray for Revit?
