A former munitions factory known as The Foundry will open its doors to the public for the first time in almost a decade with a coalition between artist Andrei Molodkin and the notorious Industrial band Laibach.
For DANGER: WE FORGE THE FUTURE, Andrei Molodkin will present a Gesamtkunstwerk of Cultural Terror; a site-specific environment of monumental propaganda. Laibach’s live music will reference the 1983 scandal at the XII Music Biennale Zagreb that caused a four-year ban in their home country, along with a dark new reflection on their beginnings, born from the revolutionary communist and industrial city of Trbovlje, in the Red district area of Slovenia.
The Foundry is a 4500sqm building complex located on the outskirts of Maubourguet, a small town in southwestern France. Built-in 1870, it was mobilized to make ammunition for the French war efforts, where young children took arms to fight as part of La Résistance. Rehabilitated by Andrei Molodkin, who predominantly works with human blood and crude oil, The Foundry has provided fertile ground for the radical underground, welcoming hacktivists, philosophers, artists, criminals and politicians throughout the years.
Andrei Molodkin and Laibach have historically caused outrage and disturbances due to their hyper-identification with ritual and violence. Encouraged by the Taliban’s call for peace between Russia and Ukraine, the coalition has commissioned ‘Unternehmen Barbarossa’ a new artwork produced in Afghanistan that will be on display at The Foundry before its presentation to the United Nations. Representations of large-scale projects by Erik Bulatov and Andres Serrano, amongst others, will also remain in view.
