Danged Noumena: Kant Versus Husserl on "The Thing-In-Itself" with Matt Bower

Is there a reality beyond appearance which we cannot access? Matt Bower joins us to discuss Kant’s “the thing-in-itself” and Husserl’s response to Kantian ideas about the nature of perception.

Hey it’s my old professor from Texas State! His class on phenomenology and existentialism was what first got me into continental philosophy.

37:03 I think Marx had our access to "the thing in itself" pretty much figured out. "the 'idea' is nothing else than the material world [i.e., the things in themselves] reflected by the human mind and translated into forms of thought"

I think Husserl's critique here of Kant's "thing in itself" is quite hitting. Throughout the critique of pure reason, Kant struggles with his terminology, especially when it comes to "things" and "objects". Sometimes, he calls appearances things and objects, and sometimes these terms are meant to denote the wordly source of the appearance, i.e. things and objects "in themselves". It seems as if Kant's language gives a window into a "phenomenological understanding" of thing that runs counter to the over-all Kantian view.

33:20 "objects" do have "meanings" if they mean something *to you*! If it's a box covered with something poisonous to you, what that MEANS is that you probably shouldn't lick it! You know, unless... :P

34:36 you don't "bestow sense on" the "thing in itself"! You *make sense of* "the thing in itself"! Duh! :P

35:33 metaphysics doesn't have "implications"! Metaphysics is just the stickers you apply directly to reality! Alternatively, it's like my nightguard! It's the same shape as my teeth, so it snaps right into my mouth! You can kinda think of metaphysics the same way

Even color vision is "imaginary"! It runs through your brain's "imagination circuits"! It's metaphysics your brain is doing that you apply directly to reality! And your brain does it because it confers an advantage, but you get to enjoy it either way!

43:02 come on! The thing that replaced the jar of pickles is just the Cartesian Demon! That doesn't exist either, except statistically! The statistical Cartesian Demon is just how many missing socks you have! It's only a big deal when life and death is involved! Not a jar of fkn pickles!

Well, Kant's day job was as a racist anthropology professor. Philosophy Tube made a pretty good video about it (this was pre-transition, so it was a couple of years ago, at least)
