That man is Mikado Shinsen, one of the Kirigiri family's former inheriters. He was supposed to inherit the Kirigiri name upon one of the family member's deaths but when Kyoko was born the title went to her and so he cut ties with the family. Seemingly an ordinary person he also has the skills of acting and disguising as other people given that his build matches theirs, impersonating Kyoko's maternal grandfather once. At the age of 10 he managed to become a detective and throughout the years despite his lackluster traits, his deductions regarding other people and their fates (The event in which you know someone’s about to die, but cannot save them regardless) sparked a desire to move forward, attempting to further develop his skills so he could save those in destitution. As time passes he realizes that he doesn’t have the capability to do so any longer, having failed his goal; As his intuition and recollections tell him that there are various small scale events that, when put together as a pattern, will grow significant enough to cause large casualty. And so, with the intent of easing other PI’s initial skill hurdle he along with Fuhito established the Detective Library. Time later the Crime Victims’ Relief Committee was established with him and another detective Gekka Ryuuzouji; With the goal being to find a detective that could accomplish what he couldn’t do, despite the questionable methods used to host the Duel Noire, various events which are used to fund the organization and detective's skills.

There is no official localization yet in English. I have copy-pasted the 7th novel ending from a different comment of mine to answer your question, -- In the 7th novel, The case that Samidare and Kirigiri are invited to solve happens at the Sirius Observatory. It's a purposefully parallel to the first case they ever solved together. The set up purposefully incorporates elements from several cases they have solved throughout the series, and it includes contingencies to obstruct the tricks that they used to solve the case last time. Among the most serious changes are the fact that every participant is handcuffed side-by-side with modified chains, forming a circle. They can only remove the handcuffs with a key card, and taking them off in any other way will inject your wrist with a paralytic drug, essentially making you a sitting duck. Needless to say, it was a tough case, but it was only further complicated by the fact that the culprit wasn't really acting with any sense of self-preservation. He was cunning, but his choices were not always logical, and he was difficult to predict. The culprit here is Yuhain, a wealthy man whose life was ruined so utterly that he didn't really care whether he lived or died. That level of desperation, coupled with his formidable resources, essentially made him the perfect client to create a nearly impossible case. This eventually leads to the entire building being engulfed in flames. During their escape from the building, Kirigiri finds Yuhain (the culprit) lying on the ground, covered in flames, with a key card in his grip. She determines that it's the only way to save the other, so she reaches through the fire and grabs it, even though it causes unimaginable pain. She frees herself and then tosses the card to her who unlocks her own cuffs. Kirigiri explains her deductions to Samidare as they exit the observatory. She's worked out how it all went down, but she never expected the building to catch on fire. It's the middle of winter, so everything outside is freezing, and it's snowing violently. Both girls are far away from civilization. That's when a crossbow arrow comes out of nowhere and knocks Samidare down violently. It was fired by Yuhain, who was not dead when they saw him earlier. He was simply unconscious. Yuhain tries to reload his crossbow, but Kyoko diverts his attention with the key card she stole. She offers to negotiate, but he's not having it. The man throws a knife at her, and it pierces her already scorched hand. He's going to kill them. Samidare manages to recover from her injury, and she uses the handcuffs to literally cuff the culprit's leg to her wrist. An earlier stipulation of the duel noir was that if each participant is not back in their rooms by nightfall, the building will explode. She uses this to deduce that there are explosives in the observatory, and she starts dragging Yuhain toward the fire. During the struggle, he manages to shoot her one more time, and Kyoko runs after them to stop her but she's too late. The building explodes, finally finishing the damage to Kyoko's hands and straight up tossing Samidare and Yuhain off a nearby cliff. Battered and beaten, Kyoko makes her way down the cliff naturally and finds her hanging on to life by a thread, with a dead Yuhain next to her. They were both impaled by some of the debris that the explosion tossed. Kirigiri is barely able to maintain consciousness as she runs up to her sister and hugs her. She begs her partner to stay with her, to live. She swears that she's going to make sure they both get home alive. Samidare will definitely pull through, like she always does. But she's tired.. Everything is going dark. The girl wakes up in a hospital bed days later with bandages around her hands. She's burnt, injured, and suffering from severe hypothermia. They say it's a miracle that she survived. When they found her, she barely had enough body heat to make it to the hospital, because Samidare was laying on top of her, covering her with her arms.

Ok so as I have read thoughout the novels, I just have to say that the MC, Samidare Yui's overall attitude and actions get infuriating. I get it, her character is the way it is just for DR;K, and that’s the problem. Let’s start up with her sense of ‘justice’, both which is slightly reasonable(?) for her viewpoint and absolutely idiotic most times. a) As an amateur 'detective’ (having somehow registered at the DSC at 13, mind you) she falls into the stereotypical 'JuStIcE wIlL RuLe oUt’ and ’(insert obvious black and white 'that action is like, totally evil!!1!11’)’ mindset. I get that author has written her that way for the obvious detective protag trait, but let’s be real here, it’s stupid as hell. We partially have Naegi for that (even his viewpoints bring more character than her sometimes flat reasoning). What really ground my gears was just how stupidly naive her 'evil bad’ trait was to the point of disregarding other scenarios she’s eventually presented with. In a couple of instances, we have that. And the reason for becoming an amateur detective? 'JusTicE.’ …Really? Literally no one holds that save for a few here and there but let’s get real, it’s an outdated notion. Most do so for growing their skillset, cash, and much more, better reasons. Perhaps ask again in a couple of years. Before entering Norman’s hotel, within Nakamura’s presence as he asks Samidare’s opinion on the Crime Victims' Relief Committee and the Culprits taking on the case, and Samidare, being the the most stuck up person ever, replies with a “Can’t sit back and watch”, going so far to state that it’s 'selfish & egoistical’ to use the help of the Committee to change one’s life. Oh boy, this viewpoint really makes me sigh. So let me say this: Yes, I get that committing crimes to achieve or solve whatever problem you have might not be right but overall it depends on circumstance. Poor and struggling? Can’t afford cash and have to decide on rent or your next meal? Then yes, stealing might be justified, especially on large corporations, etc, less so on that self made local shop next block. Straight up murder?.. Errrr, things get a little more complicated. Then again, revenge against your antagonist does skew things up regarding right/wrong. You see, due to Committee’s straight up gaming of the crime and case system, it tends to create an artificial problem. Like politicians and absolutely lazy individuals, it’s so much easier to solve easy or imaginary problems than the real deal because it creates a false belief or change and gives the person a form of credibility, further forming their habits and image of “doing something”. This in turn, for DSC detectives who receive the envelope, can either a) waste their time and move on, or b) further gain and train their skills in a ln an 'artificial’ environment because it is, after all, just a stage set. If I were a detective, I’d help the culprit shave off 7 days, let them free with their success, money and life along with a portion of cash shared with me of course. This way, both parties get their share and there’s no bias against one side or another. The victims are just people, after all. a1) Another case is her decisions regarding the Crime Victims' Relief Committee. Yeah, it is sort of shady in how it functions, but let’s be real here, so much can be gained just from joining; Money, power, influence, trade exclusive secrets, much more and hell if her goal was to take it down then it would be many times easier to do so from the inside rather than her stupidly short-sighted decision of taking on 12 Duel Noire. With that, it’s best to exploit the system rather than rebel against it. Plus, Shinsen could be a great resource when it comes to whatever is on regarding detectivery and conflict, despite his nature. 'Good’ and 'evil’ is nothing but interpretation, and both has its fair share of pros and cons. b) Why on earth does she choose to 'protect’ young Kirigiri, a random 13 year old she literally just met when on her first 'case’? And despite that, their 'friendship’ is at most 1-2 weeks old. Now her past with her now deceased younger sister might have an impact on just how she views her partnerships, but honestly I don’t buy it one bit. For one, Kirigiri already can protect herself just fine and secondly it just feels forced, as if plot itself had worked up to do so. To wrap it up, her slight attachment to said person is slightly worrying due to her slight dependence she shows (luckily she slowly breaks out of it, but it’s still infuriating.), that alone leaving her open to other problems. Lastly, literally no one just decides to just fixate and protect someone. Truth be told, every interaction has a transaction, and I know that there’s that one 'good samatarian’, but that doesn’t apply since most aren’t like that in said moment. That alone means Samidare is foolishly willing to give up whatever to a random who barely gives any ounce of care towards her. Unfortunately in the end however, she has her moments and opportunities for the grey areas to come in, but due to her personality and the way she’s written is unable to see the utility of bending some rules here and there in order to reach whatever goal. She just had to adhere to the only set out notion of 'right & wrong’ and in the end screwed herself. Bottom line is, I feel as if she had an option to be a better and more interesting character had she been more self centered and selfish, it would make for some interesting points and interactions with others, and the way options and events can be navigated by.
