Hello! Theatre major here! A lot of people are confused about changes but it’s difficult to adapt many media’s to the stage. They only have a certain amount of time therefore many things had to either be cut or moved around. Also, many executions would be impossible to adapt to the stage without it A. looking unrealistic or B. someone getting injured. It’s just the way it has to be. I think they did wonderful despite the challenges they had to face! Also, the creator of the game was overseeing everything so nothing was done without his consent! On another note: These actors were PHENOMENAL. Each and every one really embodied their character and stole the show in their own ways! Don’t forget! Be grateful for what we do have! They did this for you guys! They certainly didn’t have to.

As someone who has also studied theatre, I completely agree. Honestly, I think adding the extra rule that "voting wrong, even if everyone else gets it right, means you die" was probably the best thing they could have changed. Yeah, it sucks having to cut down on cases, but at the very least you should try to keep internal logic. Honestly, the only thing I'd have changed is if we could see more Plushie Monokuma, rather that Animated-Screen Monokuma, you know what I mean? But that's just wish-fulfillment XD

am I the only one that feels bad for Sayaka and can relate to her? BEcause the idol industry is exactly like that, if you disappear people will forget and and move onto the next idol. and you should've known her backstory, she was very lonely and she didn't have a mother. her dad worked very hard. and like so she would always watch idol shows! This version of Celestia is way better than the game's version. Her trial seemed strange and a bit too obvious for me which was not really fitting for a character like her. This version played with her talent as the ultimate gambler and still included her being wrong AND lying to everyone. She could have won with the help of Lady Luck and that's perfect for her!

I agree and disagree. Although celeste seems like an awful person to the core she really isn't. Was this trial more interesting and well written , yes; but the things she says to sakura wouldn't likely happen. I love seeing this more despair side of her though. I hated trial three but I liked the way they portrayed her more in the original. However thats just my opinion

Honestly... This stage play does a better job with the character arcs of Celeste and Taka than the games. Taka dies voting against the odds for his homie, when his arc in the game was less fulfilling and seemed more cut short. And then Celeste... who I personally thought did a pretty shitty job in the game of conveying herself as "The Ultimate Gambler" as she played her hand way too quickly and made the investigation obvious. But in this one? She stakes her entire life on a gamble of whether she was the one who killed Sakura or if she killed herself. And drags Hifumi down with her. And I feel that's a more fitting end to the Life of an Ultimate Gambler.

Plus in her FTEs she briefly mentions Makoto's luck rivaling her own, and I feel that this was really seen in the stage version. Makoto and his friends choose to vote for Sakura as the blackened, and they end up being right, whereas Celestia's gamble fails. Her luck fails against Makoto's in a way.

The only problem I have with Celeste's gamble is the fact that she voted herself... how would she even win? To start with, there's the confusion of "does Monokuma decide who killed Ogami, or is it the votes that decide"? They completely gloss over it. Now, if it's the votes who decide, then her best bet is to vote for Ogami. If Celeste is chosen as the blackened, then she *is* the blackened and must be excecuted. But if Ogami is chosen as the blackened, she only lives if she also voted Ogami. On the other hand, if Monokuma gets to decide, then she's essentially at Monokuma's mercy. If Monokuma *did* chose Celeste as the blackened, then her voting herself adds to "the majority", and so she brings herself closer to loss. But if Monokuma chooses Ogami as the blackened, then, again, she only lives if she also voted Ogami. Like, I absolutely agree that this case is a better showcase of the Ultimate Gambler, but it falls apart at the end. Specifically because Celeste can *only* live by voting Ogami. As the Ultimate Gambler, especially someone who's studied game theory, she would know this, and she would have voted Ogami. Now, that's not to say we must throw the change out with the bathwater. We could instead change it to where Monokuma says something like "well, if Ogami hadn't been poisoned, she wouldn't have even been in a position where Celeste could kill her to begin with, so Ogami is the blackened." Hifumi could have voted for her, allowing his excecution, but in this alternate scenario, Celese voted Ogami. Then, they go forward with the trial for who killed Ikusaba. But, instead of Naegi being the one Monokuma pins the murder on, it's Celeste, and *that's* how she dies. Monokuma can then say something like "well, of course the Ultimate Gambler is a liar, of course she'd still cling to innocence. But it's all true. Celeste killed Ikusaba, thinking either she'd killed the mastermind and the game is over, or no one would suspect her and she'd win. She lost her first gamble and couldn't help but double down." Or something like that. TBH, I don't think my solution would have worked that much better, especially since the 3rd game trial was cut because they only had so much time on stage... In conclusion, it's a more fitting end, but it sacrifices the internal logic of the situation, including the new rule of "if you vote the wrong person, you still die". It could have been worked over a bit more. I absolutely love the idea of Celeste losing a gamble, but it should have been better incorporated into both the game *and* the play.

Gotta admit, I loved the way the stage play handled Junko’s punishment compared to the game. If all Junko wanted was to have a taste of the despair that comes with death, then that’s what they couldn’t let her have. Just seemed like a far more fitting end.

@@legojedi328 I think the idea was that Junko was bored of everything, and simply wanted to die. Sure, she could've lived out the rest of her days in the despair-filled world that she created, but that would eventually become tiring. There is no despair to be felt in knowing you won, she wanted to lose so she could feel the despair of death, but it never came.

Okay, I know the dancing Monokumas are a little out there, but seriously - this play was genuinely great. The changes they made to the source material were not only logical, they added so much; Taka, for instance. Instead of dying as a victim, he dies giving his life for his literal dying trust in Mondo, refusing to lose faith in him and see him as a murderer, as a blackened. The acting is also just great - the final lines shared between Mondo and Taka's actors really knocked it out of the park with the bittersweet tragedy of the case as a whole. Another example would be Celes; her death and actions were handled pretty well, showing her to be as opportunistic, crafty and devious as all fans would know her. Her actress was also really good at showing that this entire killing game was, in reality, just another day for her. Another day to get excited by the odds, to exploit your circumstances and your opponents, to prevail despite the odds - this is particularly noteworthy when she creates this dilemma as to whether she killed Sakura or whether Sakura killed herself. Even as she dies, she revels in death the thrill of chances, of luck and of circumstance. In my opinion, it's a true depiction of Celes' mindset. Holy shit though, we cannot forget the costume design. Like, they nailed Naegi, Kyoko, Celes, Chihiro, Sayaka, Mondo, Taka, Hagakure and Fukawa. The rest either just have slightly off hairstyles, but at this point I'm nitpicking - serious kudos to the costume designer, because making these (especially Celes') could not have been easy. As a minor note, I also liked the way they got out the trial podiums. I just thought it was neat! Honestly, as weird this sounds, I genuinely think they nailed Danganronpa One with this play. I'm kind of amazed it was so good. Like, genuinely, I was expecting the acting to be off, the costumes to look weird and out of place and for the line delivery to just not be as enjoyable as in the game. But I was wrong, and I couldn't be happier.

I completely agree. Some of the changes were incredibly welcome and the way it was adapted for the stage was incredible. The main thing I like is that every person has to vote correctly, because people who vote wrote will die regardless. It creates a good reason as to why they over explain everything in the game-because if even one person misunderstands, that persons blood will also be on Makoto's hands

I only had one complaint about Celeste: I assume the blackened doesn't get killed if they vote wrong, so why wouldn't she vote for Sakura? Either way she lives right? I don't take her as the insane sort of gambler who would risk her own life when she didn't need to... though this is really nitpicky XD

1:33:53 this scene is so heartbreaking because if you remember from the game, Taka revealed that he wished he could’ve stopped Mondo from killing Chihiro when he thought the air purifier was a time machine and when he asked if alter ego hated him for not being able to prevent the murder from happening. So here, for a brief moment, you see a symbolic representation of Taka wishing he could’ve stopped him

I actually genuinely cried during that whole scene, like... wow man, I didn't think they could make Taka's story anymore sad than it already was but they DID?
