The suggestion about the specs is very good advice in my opinion. A guitar must feel and sound nice, whatever its made of doesn't matter that much. Well, it shouldn't matter that much. This blue colour probably makes you want to pick it up every time you see it. Cool review, Henning!

I saw one of these yesterday, a 59 Devine in Walnut. It looked cool, but seemed like it was made out of plastic, like the boards around hockey rinks. I picked it up and it was light as a feather, and it was so nice to play. Probably the nicest feeling guitar after my Telecaster Ultra. It was just perfect and sounded so good. I may go back and buy it tomorrow.

Just bought one of these. Great guitar, BUT, recessing the bridge makes restringing near impossible without removing the bridge, and you can only do that if you unscrew the mounting posts... which means you have to set the action and (maybe) the intonation every time you restring. The recess just doesn't have enough clearance around the bridge unit. My advice would be either shim the neck to tilt it enough to bring the bridge to a practical level, or buy the model with the metal version of the original rosewood bridge. Otherwise, it's a great instrument.

Also, it is light as a feather. It's the first guitar I've liked playing besides my strats for many, many years which is so unexpected as I thought it would just be a novelty destined to gathering dust in a corner with my Les Paul and PRS :)

Syd Barrett, a founder of Pink Floyd, used a Danelectro on most of his recordings. Probably the most shining example is 'See Emily Play'. I purchased a 'baby blue' color, as it reminds me of my late dad's old '56 Ford Fairlane, the first car I rode in. Be ready to file nut slots, and replacement parts are unobtainable from provided contact.

They sound pretty awesome with a slide as well...and would be quite simple to put and XY pad in...and now I have my next project idea...mid tier Danni with normal humbucker on bridge lipstick at neck and swap out the bridge with the guitar Fetish humbucker lipstick, mod in an XP pad, and setup the eBow in the effects loop as well.

well, I may be wrong, but I think the Daelectro pickups have a fair amount of microphonics as well as electro magnetics. I had one, and they do seem to sing a bit even through the pickups, and you can almost play them as an acoustic; only slightly too quiet to pull it off. They are nearly as hollow as a Dreadnaught and they weigh about the same as a Taylor single cut. While playing with a slide, the twang does seem to resonate and sustain like an animal through one as well.

It sounds really nice for some rhythm and chords. I could see it having a place in some soul or maybe worship music. Although perhaps not its "intended" place, this thing clearly exists in its own dimension. Further, I could see this thing doing well with some surf rock. Beautiful playing, and very entertaining overview!

Not sure if you missed it or what but he explained that Zepplin used one, and not just for clean stuff- I've seen country music guys use them, I've seen jazz guys use them, I've seen folk guys use them, funk bands, pop bands, and the list goes on. And I'm not talking about some guy I knew playing one- I'm talking about famous musicians playing on hit records. The Danelectro has an established place in almost every style of music- not just worship or "soul".

Hi Henning, thanks for this neat demo. I love the looks of this Dano The pastel colour reminds me of my Sea Foam Green PRS Starla which I love and the smooth clean tones are perfect for me as that is the tone I use most with maybe some chorus or delay. But, and it is a big BUT, as I have mentioned before, I live high in the mountains of Northern Spain where the climate in the winter is very damp and my modern furniture which has Masonite backs, drawer bottoms etc warp like crazy with the humidity. I wonder if this lovely guitar would suffer from the same problem here. If I was confident that all would be well at those prices I would buy one tomorrow! Cheers, Chris.

Is there an important difference between this masonite Dan and the new spruce? Im thinking about getting a Danelectro, so it'll be great if you help me with this. Thanks!

I cannot believe that anyone might be turned off by the look of the Danelectro guitars. That's like saying "Don't let the suits the protagonists are wearing deter you, you might actually enjoy 'Mad Men', " To me, these are the most beautiful guitars of all. Minimal and classy design, but then the colours. The orange one is the Christina Hendricks of guitars.

Are the pickups in this guitar different from the Danelectro 59M NOS Plus? "New and Improved" pickups are not necessarily better for getting that "retro" sound.

Hallo Henning! Could imagine that the open high e string sounds weird, because of wornout slot on the nut or bridge. That slight buzz kills vibration... just my 2 cents... Grüße, and thanks for all your funny and informative videos!

They did a 56 single cutaway a few years back that I really liked the look of. There were two versions. A whte, slightly more blingy looking one and a red one that had a humbucker in the bridge position and 6-in-line, white, vintage tuners. I'd have really liked a single coil version of the red one (even though red normally isn't my colour, but it just worked with that particular guitar) but it seems that Danelectro discontinued it. It's a shame because it just oozed cool.

+napalmhardcore They are fairly inexpensive second hand. Try to get a 98~01 if you can, they had the best build quality/price ratio of the reissues. It's as if the Evets Corp. wanted to make a statement along the lines of 'We're second only to Jerry Jones!' and the quality of those instruments still shines through today when you play one. They just feel right. Mine will be celebrating it's 17th birthday soon. Bought it new when mid life crisis' came knocking saying 'Forget the bass, switch to six strings, buy a Danelectro'. All woo and wiggly lines :-) All the reissues are good at minimum, with the latest ones getting back to the quality of the Korean made first tranche. Genuine original American made Danelectro, Coral, Sears and others crop up on ebay at prices not much more than a modern reissue. A Jerry Jones requires selling a kidney, but if you are a Dano fan, you'll sell. Hennings summing up of just how useful and flexible a guitar they are is spot on in my experience. Such a useful sound to have in your sonic armoury. One of these, a Telecaster and something with mad humbuckers covers pretty much all electric six string duties.

+VintageSG I'm reluctant to buy second hand if I can't try it out first. If I'm buying online, a manufacturers/shop warranty gives me peace of mind. I'd like a Danelectro one day, though I must admit that I'd like to cover the holy trinity first (Strat, Tele and Les Paul styles). I had a Vintage Encore (cheap Strat copy) as my first electric that I got about 20 years ago, but I gave that away to a friend. At the moment my only electric is an Epiphone Dot that has some minor issues with the frets. In all likelyhood I'm three guitars away from a Dano (plus I recently became aware of a guitar called the Reverend Club King that is another contender). Unfortunately my aspiration for buying gear is more than my wallet can support, so I spend a lot of time drooling over gear but purchase little :)

  • @VintageSG

I know what you mean about buying second hand unseen. I've been bitten. Turns out I don't like Les Paul style guitars. I built my holy trinity backwards. I started with the Vintage SG as my second guitar. I'd learned to play sufficiently well to not clam up in a shop when presented with a guitar and amp and the Vintage was the best sounding, best playing SG in there!. I went in after a Gibson, came out with a Vintage. Many Telecasters came and went. A Strat came, and stayed, then last year, I went on a 'my Telecaster' hunt and came home with a Classic Vibe Custom. Again, the guitar 'spoke' to me. If I'd tried to buy mail order, I'd never have found this particular guitar, probably spent twice as much and not been as delighted with my purchase as I currently am. My Dano is my hollowbody, and until I looked up Reverend Guitars, I thought my stable complete :-) I've just started building myself a 12 string Tele. I'm skint and fancy a 12 string, so sod it, I'll build one. Possible way into the trinity through upgraded kit guitars?

+VintageSG "Possible way into the trinity through upgraded kit guitars?" Might be above my skill set. I had a bash at making my own bone nut a few months ago. First one was going reasonably well but I cut the slots too deep. Second attempt I did the same again, but I'd seen a handy tip of sanding some bone dust into the slot and putting a drop of liquid super glue in. Ended up doing that twice and then botched the final shaping of the nut. I now have it booked in at my local shop lol. I've always been a fan of Vintage guitars. The bang for the buck is really impressive. I've seen a couple of minor problems like poorly cut string slots on them, but nothing drastic. The V100 is my number one choice for a Les Paul style at the moment. For the Stat and Tele, I'm torn between going full American Standard and Classic Vibe (reviews seem to be incredibly positive and classic is my style). That decision might come down to trying them out. Unfortunately I live on an island (Guernsey) and I think I'm correct in saying we're down to one music shop now (the other three I was aware of have closed down one by one over the years). They have relatively limited stock, so I can't always try out stuff I'm curious about. Maybe I should take a trip one day to one of the big music stores in England and try out a few guitars. Sounds like fun :)

I've played an American standard alongside a made in Mexico and a made in China Modern Player. The Classic Vibe, Modern Player and Mexican made are all very similar. Different features such as neck thickness and finish. Pick your feature set, colour and neck finish. If you don't mind Squier instead of Fender, the Classic Vibes are really as good as everyone is claiming. Check the videos by Darrell Braun for some well recorded comparisons. Brett Kingman has a few CV videos too. I do not like six saddle bridges, but other than that, yes, the American Standard IS worth the extra money. Whether or not you'd be better served with a MIM or CV is down to you of course. Not helping is it. Buy whichever feels best and you're on an island :-) I could have had a Fender instead of the Squier, but you know what?, those Squiers really do have something about them. That and I'm a sucker for 3 colour sunbursts. Next time you're on a mainland, try some Classic Vibes back to back with Fenders. They are closer than perhaps Fender Mexico like.
