Down for a bit--the wave might flip you around a bit underwater as you travel with it but then the wave keeps moving forward and leaves you behind, then you can just swim a few feet to the surface. When the tube is closing out really good surfers will sometimes take their forward momentum and turn it straight into face, so that they're out the back of the wave without ever doing the first tumbling around part.
