Dancing Mad on Piano and Pipe Organ

The digital recording is available to purchase in my store! karacomparetto...
Well it's finally here, after over two years of writing, practicing, filming and recording. Since some of you haven't heard any of the story, I'll share it here and hope it will help you appreciate even more the beauty of what you see and hear! I'm so proud of this work.
Rewind a few years ago when I was uploading a lot of classic Final Fantasy tracks to KZread. As you would expect, many of you told me I should cover Dancing Mad. At that point I had probably never even heard it. Many of the pieces I was recording at the time were brand new to me, since I never really had a strong connection to Final Fantasy when I was child, except that my brother played the games and I would watch him sometimes. Eventually I discovered the Distant Worlds performance of Dancing Mad and fell in love, to the point that I would say it's Uematsu's greatest achievement.
So, naturally I thought I should make a recording. But when I tried the piano opera version (basically the only version except for the one from the original sound version which is pretty puny), I was not thrilled. There are so many inner and outer voices all happening at the same time, it was impossible to make sense of them all on just one instrument! At the time, I was taking organ lessons, and thought it might be cool to make an arrangement of the piece for both piano and pipe organ, since the organ is such a prominent part of the piece. I've never enjoyed writing music, so I knew this was going to be a huge endeavor. But somehow the inspiration came at me and I pulled most of the arrangement together two years ago.
Last year, I started asking around about videographers who would be able to film and record the project. I was receiving enough support from my fanbase at that point that I decided I wanted to go big. I wanted to cosplay both Terra and Kefka and make the video appear like a battle between the two instruments- Terra on the piano and Kefka on the organ. I finally found someone.....and then Covid hit. The church where I was practicing organ closed, and all my plans for the project were put on hold. Eventually I came to grips with the fact that it may not ever happen the way I had planned. I started thinking of ways to record and film it myself, however crude it might turn out.
Within the past few months, I stumbled upon @jimmyonguitar, who lived in my own state- a photographer who loved Final Fantasy music and was just starting to upload his own guitar covers on KZread. We filmed a project together- Midnight Rendezvous from FFVII. After this, it became apparent that he was the one I should ask to make Dancing Mad happen! He had owned his own recording studio in the past, and had every type of amazing camera you could imagine.
We started first with the piano part. We used my sister's studio, which has a Steinway and a larger space. Finding a place to record the organ was a bit trickier, but Jimmy did some asking around and found a place willing to let us use the space if he would shoot some photos of their building. The historic pipe organ used to be in Washington DC before it ended up here!
You can imagine how thrilled I am to finally present this to you, who are the reason I even do this to begin with. Your constant encouragement and enthusiasm for what I do inspires me to keep playing, keep working hard, keep sharing. I wouldn't be the musician I am today without you, so...thank you. Also thank you to Jimmy for being the mechanism behind this project, and making it happen in a timely manner. I couldn't have done it without him.
Hopefully I will have many more projects like this in the future! My brain is going crazy right now thinking of a piano and pipe organ arrangement of the last boss themes from Chrono Trigger. Maybe along with the complete soundtrack for piano? We shall see!
PS- Hopefully by the weekend I'll have some phone and desktop wallpapers for you to use of me as Kefka and Terra! Just go to my website and sign up with your email to gain access to them karacomparetto...

VGM pipe organist here... First of all: *HUGE compliments* for this amazing performance, Kara! Since you were well-known to me as a "piano only" soloist, there were a couple of things which instantly caught my eye from an organist's perspective: Your clean and upright posture on the bench, the well-exercised pedaling technique (which, as an info for all non-organists, is pretty difficult to perform precisely with this kind of heels on her cosplay shoes) and the distinct (and correct) organ-alike touch and articulation on the manuals, which differs a lot from the piano touch/articulation that must have been stuck in your fingers' muscle memory for ages. I could instantly recognise that you must have been taking quite a bunch of organ lessons before this recording in order to accomplish an optically and acoustically convincing performance like this --- and was confirmed by the description as I read along. For all who read this, professionals and non-professionals alike: Kara has accomplished an outstanding job here, as did her companions on filming, audio mixing/dubbing and, of course, her mentors. Let alone the tuning/temperament of both instruments: Finding a pipe organ that's perfectly in tune with an arbitrary (grand) piano from a completely different location is indeed a challenge, which would normally mean that one of the instruments (preferrably, the piano) would have to be retuned completely to match the other. Keeping audio and video in sync when shooting from different angles, with multiple cams and/or in multiple takes/sessions is _not_ an easy task as well and can be tricky to handle if you're not using pro tech equipment. Almost needless to say that your Terra/Kefka costumes are top notch and thus add a high-end finish to this awesome project. *CONGRATULATIONS* and a deep, deep bow from my side.

Oh that’s so neat I’m so glad you found the video and thought it was good! I’m in no way a professional organist- I’ve taken a couple years of lessons but I was never super dedicated- lots of reasons, like just being too lazy to leave the house to practice my instrument 😂 but since I’ve been a pianist my whole life, and super in love with baroque music, I think I took quickly to the instrument. I see where my technique is flawed, but I learned a lot of great things about the organ like, as you said, not using the same type of bodily movement that you would on the piano (after all, using more energy isn’t going to make it louder!) I was a little concerned this might make the video less interesting and less intense, but I chose to be more musically accurate 😛 also I did not actually use these shoes to record, I have a pair of suede bottomed organ shoes haha! Just subscribed to your channel, thanks for sharing!!

@@KaraComparetto (and @WoodyofmC and @JimmyOnGuitar) - I fully concur with WoodyofmC - this is an outstanding accomplishment on many counts - not the least of which is the matched tuning between the organ and piano! You did very well in your capacity as an organist - not an easy accomplishment to play both instruments with their vastly different technic. And not to overlook the excellent registration. Don't let the "bodily movement" / "more energy" thing hold you back either - it never stopped Virgil Fox - ;-) Your compositional and performance efforts have all paid off well, and JimmyOnGuitar is obviously gifted as a videographer - this is PHENOMENAL! Congratulations to all!

Truly these are timeless melodic ideas which stand outside of any other context but the great stories told within the games paired with the beautiful music takes the emotional experience to a new level. The graphics and the mechanics may become more dated, but the music has yet to be matched. Your work in keeping it alive in all our hearts is truly noble.

Two villains made the list as a write-in. Kefka was one of them, and he TOPPED the list at #1, as a write-in!!! Unbelievable. Such an incredible job! When I think that this song came out in 1994 (nearly 30 years ago) on 16-bit hardware, all it does is reiterate the sheer brilliance of Uematsu. The man wrote a masterpiece- truly Bach level arrangement, on such limiting hardware. Mwa hahaha!!!

[listening to song] Wow dang, wish the organist from that Chicago concert from what feels like forever ago could've channeled some of what future-Kara's got going on here. [checks description]-- _Two Years?!_ Jeebus, the sheer dedication alone...no wonder that guy had so much trouble. I can't imagine they gave him nearly enough time to work the piece out. [reads more] ...Incredible. Thank you for your persistence and patience in bringing all this together -- it came out fantastic. I think one of my favorite moments was that cheeky little line of organ from Kefka. Got an audible chuckle out of me; everything about it so perfectly encapulates him as a villain, and it flows seamlessly into the dueling narrative here.
