    This is late, but for everyone talking about his technique, I just wanted point out few things. - He's playing Warped Tour, which means the band only gets a 30 minute set before they have to get off the stage for the next band. Because of this, the setup of his drums were probably rushed, and he didn't have time to get them into a more comfortable position. Try playing with your seat even 1 inch closer to the snare than you're used to and you'll see what I mean. - Warped Tour is a party tour, and DGD is a party band, these guys probably get wasted every night, and are exhausted from being out in the sun all day. On top of that, Inspire The Liars is the last song in their set, so it COULD be that Mingus just doesn't give a fuck and is dicking around. (with the fills and etc.) - Mingus has been playing professionally for this band and others for more than 10 years now, if he's really been using this technique the whole time, it's amazing he hasn't hurt himself. - I'm not sure if it's officially stated, but stuff he says in interviews suggests he was self-taught, or had little instruction from others. Keep in mind, when Mingus was growing up, he couldn't just look up Drumeo videos, so he might not know the "perfect technique" Nonetheless, Mingus still plays this song very well, and consistently plays well live for DGD. Just look at his other drum cam's and you'll see that he is a very talented and creative drummer, especially for being able to write and keep up with this kind of music.

    I love drummers who do exactly what comes to them and express themselves. This is exactly what he does here. Most people's idea of perfection is executing a textbook way of doing things. Take away that textbook and you have what I consider perfection. Untamed creativity.

    That’s because not only does he have speed and excellent precision / timing, but he can make a melody with his kit, which is a rare and hard skill to master. He has a very well versed background In his instrument. A lot of musicians learn a genre and not their instrument. He learned his instrument then the genre which allows him to have a lot more creativity and dynamics. If you watch drummer of I Prevail: Gabriel Helguera’s KZread channel “Drum Beats Online” he really goes into the importance of those things I listed. There’s more to drumming than a fast double bass and hands.

    If you like different drums in post-hardcore bands, I'd recommend checking out Night Verses. They're probably moreso post-rock now, but their older stuff (when they still had a vocalist) was definitely on the post-hardcore side of things. Their drummer is absolutely one of the best in the game right now.

    I can confidently say that Matt's technique has nothing to do with the way his drums sound live. He is such a consistent player that he sound checks perfectly, and the sound guys get everything right for him. I got to watch their sound check at Union Transfer in Philly and in that live setting Matt sounds exactly like the record. To define a great drummer, you don't look at technique close your eyes and listen. If you like what you hear the technique shouldn't matter.

    Mingus is one of the best drummers period. his groove reminds me of young David Silvera from Korn first two albums, except he's kept that magic from the beginning to current. his fills with his feet are pretty amazing. I listened to the OG Downtown Battle Mountain and its amazing how much more technical he got just from that to the second album. Got to watch his at Ceaser Chavez while my girlfriend was in the pit crowd surfing and it was pretty dope, especially being like 20 feet away from him while he played Carl Barker. DGD rules.

    Actually man, those two fills weren't musical. They weren't even crisp/well subdivided trips (unfortunately). If you listen to the record, the fills he plays are perfectly complementary to the guitar licks. Complementing melodic instruments rhythmically is the most musical thing you can achieve as a drummer.

  • @reidpoffenbarger6857

    @reidpoffenbarger6857

    6 жыл бұрын

    My point is that it isn't easy to follow considering it battles the guitar parts. If you listen to the 3:31 mark, he does "triplets" again but they actually are poorly subdivided to where theres not even the proper amount of strikes within a sequenced time. The fills referenced in this initial posts sound like he wanted to make them triplets, but he unfortunately failed there, too. Especially because the guitar licks at that point are 16th note subdivisions, the drums attempting to play trips and poorly done so really fights the guitar licks. Dont get me wrong...I'm not trying to disrespect y'all or this drummer because I love his songwriting and I love DGD as a whole. But you guys obviously like him, so you are giving him the benefit of the doubt. He's human tho, and I can tell y'all he messed up at these places.

    If you guys are wondering why this song sounds kinda sub par, it's because this entire album cycle was rushed & just kinda written off the cuff. Mothership is a good album, but it's particularly lacking when it comes to creativity. At least Artificial Selection picked it back up, & Afterburner is AMAZING.

    Funny, Mothership sounded way more creative to me than Artificial Selection did. I think that’s their safest album.

    He needs to RELAX bro dam He would get such a better sound out of the drums if he relaxed his grip and used a consistent velocity stroke instead of squeezing the sticks and pounding the heads

    @1:35 wtf was that. He's such a good drummer, but that part just didnt work. I suppose when your doing warped tour you get a bit bored and try to fit in new things.

    Harrison Cable That was a 7-count thing with a rest note at the 6th count like what the guy above said. Pretty cool if you ask me

    i liked it. it was a 5 count thing. it sounds weird because 5 notes are used to take up the place of 6 notes so they're a tad bit slower than the 6 notes. It's very hard to pull off live. mad props to mingus

    i see what you mean, i did't care for the rest note myself, but it wasn't horrible. but definitely felt like it ended earlier than it should've

    this guy is good, but jeez.. just like the drummer from The Story So Far, so stiff. not really any dynamics. they just play exactly like the track.
