I've heard others say that while the choreography isn't ridiculously hard, SHINee really commits to the concept making it so much more impressive. Also, the fact that they will do this in the middle of a 3-hour concert while singing live is crazy. And yes, Jonghyun was such a dynamic personality he really just comes out as a natural leader even if he wasn't the official leader. That's not a dig on Onew at all, I think Jonghyun would be that way for any Kpop group. One of the sad things about his passing is he would have been a VERY good spokesperson for Kpop to the international community. He had an amazing ability to both work a crowd and speak on a very personal level with individuals. He simultaneously had both star power and best friend vibes. I can imagine him endearing himself to the hosts and guests on talk shows around the world.

Not sure if you noticed this but when they go from frozen to vibrating one by one, Minho “turns them on” in different ways. He pulls a string for key, turns the dial/key on jonghyun’s back, shocks taemin with defibrillators, and turns onew on with a remote.

Yup! Loved how each person was activated!

If you remember, in their "Everybody" MV SHINee are supposed to be toy soldiers and they get their energy and power from the fans. So the fans use their energy to power the SHINee members up. The fans plug in the power, which sends the electricity to the grid on the floor where the members are laying and it activates the first member, Key, which then sets off a chain reaction that proceeds to activate the rest of the members. That's why in the beginning they wake up from the floor and in the end they run out of energy and they disengage and fall back down to the floor to wait for the fans to come and power them back up again. All the moves and everything you see, including the way they are dressed, is supposed to remind you of how a toy soldier would look and move. At one point we see Minho give the members an energy boost by pulling Key's pull string, winding Jonghyun's windup key, using a defibrillator to jumpstart Taemin and activating Onew by turning him on with a remote control. In the middle of the performance, where they come together and create that picture in their dance, they are supposed to look like an airplane, that's why Onew spins his arms round really fast like the propeller of a plane. The plane has to do with the fact that they are soldiers and they are depicting a scene from a battle during the Korean War. Yet again, SHINee are trendsetters, Dubstep was a new style of music and sound when "Everybody" came out in 2013, and they introduced the genera to the Kpop industry. And combining that with popping, locking and robotics as part of the choreography was also new. Tony Testa, who is a famous American choreographer that has worked with artists like Michael Jackson, choreographed "Everybody", as well as SHINee's "Sherlock (Clue & Note)," "Dream Girl" and "Married to the Music." He has also worked with other SM groups and artists, such as TVXQ and Super Junior. SHINee's "Sherlock (Clue & Note) was his first Kpop project and it was one of the first times anyone in the Kpop industry used a big name international choreographer. One thing you should know about SHINee is, they have always been known for saving their energy for where it counts the most -- for live performances and for filming MVs -- dance practices for them are literally dance practices. They are less worried about being spot on exact, and more about showing everyone the feel of the choreography and the story behind the dance. (Fun fact: As you may know, SHINee was the group that released Kpop's very first dance practice video for their song "Lucifer" in 2010, and they are the reason why Kpop groups create dance practice/performance videos today.) However, in their live performances you will see just how much of an expert they really are. Seeing as they are also singing live almost 100% of the time while performing for 3+ hours, you will notice moments where they conserves their energy, only to release it full out during the most intense parts of the dance or performance. If you think this dance practice looked impressive, just wait until you see a live performance. SHINee are known for their live stages and amazing vocals and dancing. There is nothing better than SHINee live. SHINee live are unmatched. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. It's a running joke between the fans and the members that when SHINee lip syncs you can tell because it's very obvious. Yes, over the years they have become better at lip syncing then they used to be, but now they have gained the reputation as the group that always sings live, so unless they are required to lip sync for a specific reason, SHINee what you will hear is their live vocals. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography. SHINee set the standard. That is why they are so highly respected among their peers. It is literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard all other groups strive to reach.

@@bea_hae_tae9392 😂 you aren’t 100% wrong on that! I will say my favorite choreo I learned so far happens to be Taemin’s “Advice”! But you are right there are LOADS of incredible perspectives and concepts explored which makes it freaking impossible to pick a top 3 😂

TAEMIN absolutely loves(or loved) MJ. He doesn't speak about him as often but back then he was a big fan, he had his album, poster, outfits, etc

I can totally see the influence in his movement! I bet he was LOVING working with so many choreographers who also had heavy affiliation/ inspiration from him!

That part in which Minho activates the rest of the guys is legendary, I still get chills watching it. And they still keep the Jonghyun place :')

I wrote this comment yesterday and it got so long I turned it into a substack essay. But here's the part that I started with: When I look at dance my interest is in the tale the dancers are telling, the truth or lies, the emotion, everything that makes a singer and dancer a storyteller. Your approach is a complement to my thoughts. The more technically you break things down, the more insight I have into that part of performing that can never be expressed directly, the artist's individual soul leaking through all the cracks in a human's animal nature. I don't have a dancer's trained eye, but I am seriously obsessed with SHINee's individual body language and vocal choices. The amount of footage available and the nature of these idols' ubiquitous appearances over almost twenty years is a rare and wonderful opportunity. You can study the choices and work of five multiply talented men, who have had a consistent core set of behaviors since they were trainees, and learn a lot about being an artist. The amount of hard, focussed work they do to make their performances second nature is something I've never seen in a group of performers before. There was also a shift after a few years -- maybe six? -- from a playful competition to some serious team work.

I am so glad that I am able to be a compliment to your perspective (especially knowing how I'm still very much a growing mind on so many facets on what I talk about!) They =have showcased such depth within their discography and shown the beauty of movement that ages like fine wine if that makes sense haha ! I can see their personal artistry more authentically in their recent works compared to when they debuted but it doesn't discredit what they were bringing back then whatsoever! I'm always so happy to look at a group from debut to recent years and they are one with A LOT of material like you said to snapshot their journey in a rare way! About the MJ influence with Taemin, that doesn't actually come from those choreographers you mentioned, Taemin started as a self taught dancer, when he was 8 he saw MJ dance on TV and was AMAZED so he started watching MJ and a Korean idol called Rain dance and started trying to do their moves himself, that's how he learned to dance, he would go to the playground and dance and do the moves he saw them doing on TV, and he did it WELL. We can see in his audition to SM when he was 11, only 3 years later, that he was already pretty good, and he did it all by observing and imitating, not even one class with an actual teacher. He, of course, got some more instruction in training in SM, but from those videos you can see that the CORE of his movement is all him and what he assimilated. He likes seeing dance moves, learning them and then making them his own. there are two different leg centered dance techniques that he combined (Crazy feet is one, I forgot the name of the other one) into his own movement and he used to practice it EVERYWHERE, he even did it while going to the subway when he was a trainee, to make sure he can do it on ANY surface. That's what Taemin does, he learns a technique, assimilates it and makes it his own. he also has a few iconic poses and moves that if you only see his silhouette dancing, if you see them, you'll know IMMEDIATELY that it's Taemin.

@@Ofra8191- thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment! So my point that was made was more so to do with the “enforcement” of the inspiration regarding MJ which validates the main points to my perspective of inspiration vs imitation. He grew up imitating others as a way of discovering his own artistic perspective (we ALL do this as a part of life and learning at birth) and over time, through exposure to other choreographers / genres of movement outside of this realm of DIRECT MJ influence (Koharu - Move, Jho - Drip Drop, Kasper - Advice, Kany - Hard to name a couple at the top of my head) showcased some incredible growth to him and gave him the ability to validate and expedite his artistic side of things! Hope my refined perspective makes more sense within this case! Looking forward to releasing more of my older reactions because I cover this topic a few more times with more context!

I see what you’re saying about the use of unison vs changing it up. I’m definitely not a choreographer but imo as a layman so much synchronized movement creates an impression of a regimented army. The MV shows SHINee as toy soldiers being revived by the energy and power of fans, so I can see why they decided to play off of that and make the choreo so in unison and robotic. @@dheu YES TO ALL OF THIS. Honestly the point you made about toy soldiers and the MV reference was one of the motivations to transition to how I currently do analyses. Getting a full context of MV, and basically all cinematic references that show the format in which the choreo is to be seen is just as vital as the content the choreo has in the DP space. So I agree with you that the unison promotes a degree of justification with concept that is pretty much impossible to see just with a DP, and this shows the beauty of different perspectives with a common goal of appreciating dance as an art!
