Dan's review of his 2019 Kawasaki Versys 1000 LT SE

Hi. During this time of pandemic, I thought I'd do a review of my Versys 1000 I bought late last year. I used my GoPro 4 silver. This is by no means a professional review. I just put this together with my limited video editing abilities. Nothing more. Hope you like it. Cheers and stay safe everyone.

Great review, cover lots of good points. I'm looking at this bike my self, and one of the only things is keeping undecided is exactly as you mentioned, the high rev. engine. But even with that I like it very much. My two in the list are this one, and the Africa Twin. We'll see. Thank you for your expertise on the road and all the good advise. Take care.

Hi bud. I never rode the Africa twin. I actually never sat on one so hard for me to hav any opinion on it. When I first read your comment my first thought was that the biggest difference is that the Honda has shat drive. But I double checked just to be sure and I see that the Africa has a chain drive. Now, I think they are two very different bikes. Even if it has the looks and is somewhat branded as an Adventure bike, the reality is the Vesys is a road bike. I would not take that bike off road, even on gravel roads. The Africa is made to be taken off road. The other big difference in my opinion is the engine. Yes The Versys' engine revs high but it is very smooth and it is very powerful. The Honda is a typical twin engine. Completely different power band. ANyway, I guess your choice would depend on what kind of riding you want to do. Mainly road or do you want to do trail riding. If that is the case, then you'll have to go with the Honda. THis being said, take a moment to go see the Yamaha Super Tenere 1200. If I had to pick between the Africa and the Super Tenere, I would take the latter. If only for the shat drive. Great bike also. Cheers and stay safe. Dan

Greetings from Florida! I now ride a 2013 Yamaha Super Tenere. It's a great ride but no cruise control for longer trips. No real cons with it, but the stock seat is good for 45mins comfort. A gelpad helps. The Versys SE LT+ seems like a good replacement. Moto Werk makes forward mount adjustable hwy peg brackets, that mount right to the Versys frame. No hassles install. At 64yrs, my tired old knee joints need help!! Ride safe..🙏😺

Hi there. The Kawa Versys 1000 is indeed a great bike. Though I have now moved to another bike since this review was made, I still think it's a great bike. I switched for different reasons, one is that I wanted to go to an Adventure bike and shaft drive. I considered the Super Tenere and actually sat on one at the dealership. I was very tempted and I am certain I would have been very happy with it. However I decided to cough up a bit more money and get the bike I've been wanting. So I got the R1250GS. Very happy with it. I'm sure the current model of the Super Tenere comes with cruise control. But correct if I am wrong. In the end, if you decide to switch to the Versys 1000, I have absolutely no doubt you will enjoy that bike. Great engine and ergonomics. Let me know what you decide my friend. Hi Rolf. Thanks for stopping by. You shouldn't not buy the bike just because of what I say about the seat. It's still a great bike. I really disliked the seat but I am certain others found it "adequate". It's happened to me as well with other bikes where I thought the seat was "allright" and I read reviews where people were saying the bike had the worst seat ever. For the Versys, the seat was causing me pain relatively quickly and I simply could not keep the bike with that seat. So I went out and bought another seat. Two actually :-). But do not let that stop you from possibly getting a good deal on this great bike. Worst case, there are many options available to you after should you be like me and hate the stock seat. Let me know if you buy it Rolf. Hope all is good in Thailand my friend. Dan.

HI Grant. Thanks for your comment. The seat issue is easy to overcome by buying an after market one. That's what I did when I bought a Corbin and it did the trick. The chain drive issue is something else though :-). If you are able to get beyond it and you eventually decide to buy the bike, you won't be disappointed. It's a great bike on which you can do a lot of mileage. Never been to England myself. Although that's not entirely true. Hey Dan, thnx for your honest and first review! I've made a testdrive today on a Kawasaki Versys 1000 Tourer SE, but I don't know if it was the model 2019 or 2020. Anyway, felt like a good bike. Also made a testdrive on a Yamaha Tracer 900 GT (may be not really comparable), modelyear 2020, and a BMW R1200GS (modelyear 2017). All three bikes have pro's and con's, makes it hard to choose. BMW has a good windshield, good protection. But the rearbrakepedal is worse (at least on the bike I tried): I really had to step down on the brake, before any braking was happening. For the rest of it: the BMW actually drove well. The Kawa has a good (and to my opinion normal) rearbrakepedal, you've don't have to step hard on it to brake. The only thing was the windshield: I had more turbulence on my helmet compared with the BMW. Testdrive was only 30 minutes (couldn't get more), so I wasn't able to adjust the windshield. I love the TFT-display, so for me, when I'm deciding to buy a Versys 1000 Tourer, it will at least be the 2019-model. Enjoy your bike and stay safe!

Hi Momo. Thanks for stopping by. Although different, all three are certainly good bikes in their own way. I really like the looks of the Tracer GT and it's a smaller bike than the other two. So depending on your size it might be a good option and something to consider. I think Yamaha did a great job with it and I like the way they integrated the side bags with the bike. Very nice. The Versys is an excellent bike with a great engine. You can ride that bike all day long and be comfortable. You just need to replace the stock seat though :-). Other than colour, no difference between 2019 and 2020 for the Versys. I have the SE model and it has a larger windshield than the base model so this is also something to consider. But you say that you liked the TFT display so you definitely test rode the SE model. I keep my windshield in the middle position pretty much and I do not feel any buffeting so again this is something you might want to check. As for the GS, you say it was a 2017 so I assume it was a used bike. No doubt they are incredible machines and again you can ride all day long on them and pretty much go around the earth with it. The only thing is that I am always weary of people who sell their bikes after two years or so. I always feel they are selling them because they had issues with them and were tired of dealing with problems. Not saying it's the case here though. In all honesty, unless you get a lemon, you can't go wrong with the BMW GS. Powerful, very comfy, tons of riding aids and everything else that comes with it. Anyway, good luck with your purchase and let me know what you decided to buy. Thanks again Momo and safe riding. Dan.

Hi Dan, what you say about people selling their bike after two or three years, that’s my opinion too! Having problems or just bought a wrong bike (impulsively)? I think I have to accept that no bike is without any con’s. There are always things that could be better (like you said, you didn’t like the standard seat on the SE ;))... Current bike is a Triumph Sprint 1050 ST from 2008, lovely 3-cilinder, but not really comfy for long rides, especially for my wife as a passenger. Also a reason to look for another bike. Curious if you make a new vlog!

Hi Gary. I thought about it to be honest. But the thing is, the Concours, as much as I loved riding that bike, was starting to give aches in my back and shoulders. Hence why I was looking into getting a bike with a more upward riding position. The Concours and the FJR are great bikes but I don't think, as I get older (55 yoa), I would be able to ride this type of bikes without having to endure pain. Which is not fun. Cheers. Dan

@@danielberthiaume3648 Hi Daniel. At 6'8" (and being a young man like yourself), I can attest to the back and shoulder aches on the Concours. I managed to remedy that with what I feel was the best investment I ever made on the bike...adjustable handlebars from a company called HELIBARS. I could not believe what a difference it made being able to adjust every angle of the bars in order to fit to me, rather than me having to fit to the bike. I sold the bike last year and have missed the power, comfort, and especially the storage ever since. I'm now considering the Versys because I need something that my wife can ride pillion on when she's not up to riding her own bike (she suffers from migraines often and it has impacted her ability to enjoy motorcycling.) Hi Shrek. I can't say I considered it but I certainly looked at it. I even sat on one on a couple of occasions. But as I say, I did not consider buying it. Not really certain why. It certainly is a nice bike. I actually think it's one of the nicest looking bike on the market. I like the lines of the bike and Yamaha did a great job at integrating the side bags to the bike. It looks super sharp. If you watched my review of the Versys, you saw that my wife changed her bike last summer and she got a Kawasaki Z900. In all honesty, when she initially started talking about getting a new bike, I tried to steer her towards the Tracer 900. I thought it was a bike that would fit her well. We went to a Yamaha dealer and she sat on one but it was a bit big and high for her. She came off two back to back Ninja 650 so we obviously went to the Kawa dealer. She was intent on getting a third Ninja 650 but then she sat on the Z900 and that's what she went with. She got it lowered so it fits her perfectly. But I always thought the Tracer 900 would have been a better fit for her. Thanks for stopping by Shred. Cheers.

Your English is fine... it's all about communication and I understand you well. FYI: Since you have a chain drive, you could change the size of the front of rear sprocket to get closer to the gear ratio that you wish for. There are negatives to all types of drive systems, like you mentioned, the maintenance on a chain can be a negative, but more power gets to the rear wheel with a chain or belt (less horsepower loss, verses a drive shaft). PS: When you start your videos, say (suggestion): "Hi, I'm Dan... the man!" LOL, keep the rubber side down.

Glad to see you got a Corbin. Do you experience any sliding forward with the Corbin when engine braking? Any thoughts on the long distance comfort of the Corbin? And how is your reach to the handle bars when on the Corbin? Do you think a bar riser might help? Thanks!

  • @danielberthiaume3648

    @danielberthiaume3648

Hi Spreddy. Thanks for leaving a comment. I only got the Corbin over the winter and really up here in Quebec Canada our riding season is much shorter than yours in Texas. We have this white and cold thing that gets in the way, you know, snow :-) Anyway, with the confinement due to Covid-19, casual riding is prohibited so I've only been on short rides really since I got the Corbin. But even just based on that, I can tell you that it is much more comfortable than the stock seat. You mention sliding forward. That's funny because the first thing I noticed with the seat, even before I sat on it, is that the leather seemed like it had not much grip to it and was a bit slippery. In all honesty, it is somewhat, but not to the point where you're sliding forward on it when breaking. But I wouldn't mind if it had a been more grip to it. I think that for long distance rides it's going to be comfy no worries to be had there. Regarding the bar risers, I think it would help yes. For me, I am soon to be 55 and I have a bad back. So on long rides, I need to move around in the saddle and find ways to stretch my back as it gets sore quickly. I think for me it's not a matter of bar risers really, but more of a seat with a back rest which would provide me with the support I need to simply relax and sit back and let the backrest hold me there and provide some kind of lumbar support where I do not have to worry about sitting straight. I guess a new GoldWing would be perfect for that. Perhaps in 5 or 6 years, when I am 60 and ready to retire :-). Hope this helps Spreddy. Please visit again and let me know how you like your new bike after you've put a bit of mileage on it. Thanks again buddy. PS: I was supposed to go to Austin for a week at the end of April for some work related training. But it got cancelled due to Covid. Would have been my first time in Texas. Perhaps in the fall. Who knows. Cheers. Dan

@@danielberthiaume3648 Thanks Dan. Totally understand the white and cold thing :). Here its the blistering summer heat. It makes it almost impossible to ride in the peak summer months with all your gear on. No longer comfortable riding with just a t-shirt and jeans. Past that stage. Regarding a seat with a rider backrest, you may want to check out Russell seats. They custom modify the stock seat to the customer's liking. They offer the "Day long" seat and also the sport seat. Sport seat is still quite comfy. Seriously considering them but have to wait till mid June as they are quite busy. Have to wait till end May for the Corbin as the Corbin factory in CA is closed due to the pandemic. Also considering the Sargent seats. They are based in Florida and open for business. Hi Miami. I agree on both counts. For the Concours, a new TFT and cruise control would be great. For some reason quick shifter does not do it for me. I have it on the Versys and I just can't get myself to shift gear without using the clutch. It's like I am afraid I'll break something. The Versys needs a few more HP (somewhere around 135/140) and shaft drive. It would be the perfect bike with that. Thanks for stopping by my friend. Dan

Hi bud. I am from Quebec and bought the bike at "Moto Illimité" in Terrebonne. It's right next to highway 640. They have pretty much every brand of bikes and it's a large dealership. When I decided to buy it it was the end of the season and they wanted to make room for the snowmobiles that were coming in. SO they were hungry to make deals and free some space on the floor. I think I got a good deal on it. Did not take long either. We chatted, we agreed, and signed the papers within minutes. Easy as that. Please let me know if you buy anything. I'm always interested and curious in knowing what bike people buy and why. Thanks again and sorry if I took a little longer to reply to your post. I was daydreaming I guess :-) Dan.

Great review Daniel many thanks. I have the 2019 model so 1 gen behind but also a great bike. Interesting that you like the Versys having ridden both Concours and VStrom...two bikes I also considered. Sounds like the Versys measures up well against both. Like you I find the seat uncomfortable. Mostly because it leans me forward and puts weight on the elbows. I'd be interested to know the rough cost of the Corbin seat because it looks flatter as I would prefer. Looks great by the way. About the gearing and rpm...I tend to agree...but at any sensible (or slightly less sensible) speed it's well within the capability of the engine. Even at 4000 rpm you are barely touching the mid range on the tacho. If it still bugs you... put a 1T bigger front sprocket on. It'll knock the rpm down a few hundred at least. I did it on my last bike...its pretty easy even with limited experience...albeit you'll need a breaker bar , sockets and torque wrench. Or just ask the shop to do it next service...should only cost less than 100 dollars all in....especially as a service extra. Anyway..stay safe and thank you again from UK Cheers Paul

Hi Paul. Thanks for the comment. The Corbin cost me about $750 CDN taxes and delivery included. The process went very well and I received the seat about 5 weeks or so after order. I have gone on longer rides recently and I am very happy with it. Very comfortable. And as you say, I also think it's because the main part of the seat in fairly flat. No regrets really. About the high RPM. Getting another sprocket is something that came to mind. I'm not certain. As you say, even if it revs at 4K RPM, it is well within the power of the engine. I feel like the engine could rev at that RPM for 12 hours non stop. It probably could. We'll see. I have not decided. I'll probably get used to it. Thanks for stopping by Paul. Never been to the UK. I should visit one day. I'm an avid golfer so I would love to go there and get a few rounds in in Scotland and other parts of the UK. Who know, perhaps one day. :-)

@@danielberthiaume3648 :-) Cheers for the reply Daniel- much appreciated. I wouldn't hesitate on the bigger sprocket if you have any doubts. On my last bike (vfr800) although the rpm came down...it lost a bit of Zip...but the versys has so much torque it would handle it with absolute ease.....otherwise its get some fancy ear plugs :-) About Scotland...sure ...enjoy the Golf...but the biking there is unbelievable. But aside from the VFR 800, Paul, believe me you don't want this French Canadian riding a motorcycle in the UK. I'd be dead within 15 minutes. Driving on the left side of the road is just not for me. Hi freg34. There is leg protection.......somewhat. It's better than a Ninja 1000 let's say, but not as good as the Concours. You need to tuck your legs near the engine block. So yes there is wind protection for the legs, and you are certainly not completely exposed to the cold wind, but there are bikes out there that offer better wind protection for the legs. On a final note, I am from Quebec Canada and I ride in fairly cold weather at the beginning and end of the season. I wear motorcycle pants with a pair of long johns and I do not get cold. That, and the fact that the Africa is a twin and the Versys a 4 cylinder. I prefer 4 cylinder engines. But that's just me. Hi Robert. Thanks for stopping by, watching the review and leaving a comment. I've gone on longer rides recently and I can tell you the Corbin is a good option if you want to change the stock seat. It keeps my bum in good condition up to a few hours. I think it has to do with the fact that it's fairly flat. As for the V-Strom. For me, as I have said in another forum, I guess I am too used to riding a bike with a 4 cylinder engine. The sound, the power delivery, this is what I was missing when I was on the V-Strom. Don't get me wrong, the V-Strom performed flawlessly for the 4K km or so I had it and I can see why millions of people swear by them. But it did not do it for me. Perhaps it was too much of a change after 7 years on the Concours and 4 years on an St-1300. The Strom has the most comfortable stock seat I've ever experienced though and great riding position. Go try one out and you'll see if you like it. In the end, perhaps I was not patient enough with it. Perhaps it would have grown on me after a few more months or a full season on it. I'll never know I guess. But I am very happy with the Versys. It's just that I lost a few thousand $$$$ in the trade. Thanks again Robert and a very friendly handshake to you fellow veteran.

Since I do all maintenance myself I always had two bikes, in order to have transport and in order to take my time when doing things. The Z1000 was a 2015 model that I bought new , I call it my affair 😬🤦‍♂️ It was like the supermodel, kind of exciting for a while but didn't check the boxes for a longterm relationship.........😎, it was just too uncompromising, too hard on my back and not comfortable for my wife that is with me on the bike on many rides since she doesn't ride herself. Although, I had a Honda ST1300 for a number of years (I forgot to include it in the list of past bikes in my video). I had bought it new and had it for about 4 years. I started having electrical issues with it as it wouldn't start on occasions. Nothing worst than stopping for gas with a group and your bike won't start again.
