Dan Marino was an artist with the football. The funny thing is that he didn't really set his feet properly and many times he would throw off his back foot. But he had the incredible arm strength to still sling it 60 yds off of his back foot. And every pass was crisp and pure with a tight spiral. It was a thing of beauty to watch him pass. I hate that he never got a super bowl ring, but neither did Fran Tarkenton, Jim Kelly, and lots of other great passers.

Only QB to beat the '85 Bears. The quick release cannot be appreciated in slow mo. And he had zip in those passes. Best pure passer ever.

The 50 yard, one handed TD catch by Duper was a 4th and 10 play. It was Duper's first game after a broken leg injury. I about went crazy on that play!

Marino would destroy the pass happy league the way it is now. With the change to pass interference. He'd avg 7,000 yards and 65 tds a season easily. There was never a better passer, period.

Gemini The Great the NFL has increasingly become a pass happy league, from the Mel Blount rule in 1978 to the 2004 changes, and offenses being sophisticated and focused on passing, but 7,000 yards and 65 TDs per season is another story. Defenses are smart and adapt. Marino was still great after 86’, but defenses adjusted so it wasn’t like Marino was still putting up video game numbers and shattering single season records by 33%, like when he broke the TD record of 36 with 48. He had a couple off seasons in 1988-89. Marino would annually be at or near the top of the league leaders in passing. Just like when he played, he’d have some seasons when he led the league in passing yards and TDs, and others when he didn’t, but was consistently high up there. But the volume numbers would be higher What doesn’t get mentioned about him enough is his footwork and elusiveness. People always talk about how slow he was a runner. But he had terrific footwork and that quick release, and was the least sacked QB in the league. i loved watching him take a little side step and then launch a bomb

I wish the dolphins win find another quarterback like Dan Marino somebody who throws the ball like he did when he was the quarterback. I wish he would've won at four super bowls but he didn't but he's still the best quarterback to ever played the game of football. And I'm glad he spent all 17 years in Miami I thank Don Shula for picking him and I thank Dan Marino for all the great games over the years. I watched the last couple years of Dan Marino career because I became a Miami dolphins fan in 1994 so thank you for the memories

Marino seemed more unstoppable in the old Orange Bowl. In his 3 full seasons there, he had 30 TD's each year (he didn't start out of the gate in '83)

the release of namath, the pocket moxy of unitas, the vision of brady, the river boat balls of farve & the will to win of bobby layne.... there was no better pure qb then marino in his prime if your talking about the passing component of the position. he was not the patient complete package w/ feet of lets say a montana, staubach or even the highly underrated bob griese, but far as passing there was no rival. in todays league, marino would put up #'s never seen. remember he did this w/ above avg wr's, but not elite ones (though clayton at his best was close).

I've never seen anyone throw the ball like Marino. Namath was kind of close. He didn't really throw the ball, as much as he slings it. The defense he had to work with was non existent, and no running game, either.

Love the way he slings it. I think the way Aaron Rodgers releases it and his velocity looks similar of the current QB's. You don't even see his windup, the ball is just suddenly flying.

Anyone else notice that Dan Marino's best teams were almost entirely from even-numbered seasons once his career was fully established (1983 and 1985 were great years but outliers next to what was to come)? 1987-1989-1991 teams all missed the playoffs while 1990 was a great season. 1993 saw the season-ending Achilles' injury, one year after Dan led Miami to its most recent AFC title game. 1995 had a late-season slump and a blowout playoff loss in Buffalo for Don Shula's final game, compared to his 1994 comeback and playoff win and being one Stoyanovich typical kick (not shitty) from getting back to the AFC title game. 1998 was a better year than either 1997 or 1999 too.

As a pure passer, no quarterback before or after him produced a throw the same way. He remains in a class all by himself. In today's league he'd own every record and a fist full of Super Bowls, if only Huizenga--the selfish idiot--would've given him a running back and a defence. Shameful.
