Dan Le Batard Tells Stephen A. Smith He Hates What He and Skip Bayless Did to Sports Media | Best Of

Спорт

Stephen A. Smith joined Dan Le Batard on an episode of South Beach Sessions earlier this year to discuss his new book and his impressive climb to the top of sports media and beyond. During the interview Dan told Stephen A. that he hates what sports media has become since Stephen A. and Skip Bayless' success with First Take because of all the copy cat shows and formats that don't do it nearly as well as those two. The moment is part of our 'Best Of: Hate Hot Takes' series.

The complete absence of contrition is what's annoying about Stephen A. If you're not going to apologize, then own it. Don't say "it was other people who monetized it," or there were other shows first (PTI was nothing like First Take, Stephen; Dan has it right on this, how you amped up the argument). Just own what you did. Own your part of it, at the very least. It would be so much easier to accept if Stephen would just admit that, yeah, he and Skip changed sports talk forever, in a negative way, but hey, he's making bank so he doesn't care. At least be honest about it instead of all the deflection.

Has become....? Haha.... not tryna sound smug. Just enjoying the innocence! The rise of Stephen A to riches is a sad story of late capitalism. 15 years ago I recall in his earlier days on ESPN that if you read his work on, was it called page2, youd largely love his work. He'd write thoughtful and insightful articles on a multitude of topics. Contrasted with his appearances on TV.. he'd behave bombastic and flamboyant as he does today. he got the name screaming a, spitting a, etc, and he got mocked and called lots of vitriolic and heinous things unnecessary to type even in the illustrious youtube comment sections. Later he was laid off in the last recession we were in. which was a shame. Then what seemed like out of nowhere to espn viewers he reached great personal success for him, which I'm thankful for him and his family but at the cost of his journalistic work in exchange for what Dan alludes to in this video. Yelling on TV to get clicks and attention. I wonder what it is the companies incentive today. It isn't even chasing profits. Chasing temporary shareholder value? Chasing views to prop up ad numbers to give to advertisers? Either way, they're propagandists looking to sell subpar products to people who don't need them. Pteww.

First thing is props to SAS for actually engaging with Dan Lebetard. But what SAS is missing is that there were a lot of critics of Around the Horn, Mike and the Mad Dog and Jim Rome well before First Take. So it’s just dishonest for SAS to say there weren’t critics of sensationalist media types. And the criticism that SAS and First Take took the volume up on the sensational driven sports debate is very valid. Just because you make money off something and are successful does not make you immune from criticism of the negative aspects yourof success has brought to the larger landscape.

Truth is, I don’t consider Skip and Stephen A journalists in the true sense of the word. Have they done it in the past? Yes. Are they both clearly qualified to do it even now? Of course. But ARE they journalists now? Nope. At best are opinion pieces, spewing mindless stats and records which they think support whatever opinion they are spewing today. Often times even getting the stats wrong, every time not recognizing the nuance that often goes along with their spew. At their worst, they are no better than uninformed opinions I run across on KZread. They are both here to entertain, most often I laugh at least once, but I never take them seriously. In that context I have no problem with either of them giving the public what they clearly love, the average social media idiot loves them and that’s ok! No crime against making money! Just have to keep them both (and all their imitators) in the context for which they belong. Entertainers.

I agree with Dan, and I’m not a Stephen A fan but he’s right too. He did admit what everyone already knew, it’s about the 💰!!! The difference was when there were different shows and journalists on the shows, Around the Horn is good example with original roster of 8-10 guests rotation hosted by Max Kellerman who had best tool for those shows, the Mute button! Stephen A Smith being on every show for 10+ hours a day was the start of him being the star, as it’s evolved into like a daytime talk show. As star he was given control, shown by how he had Max fired, and I’m sure others too, when he felt they upstaged him, when they just spoke on topic with their own knowledge! The result is coverage of sports, what the network is supposed to be all about, suffers. Even biggest sports fans don’t need NFL & NBA coverage 365 days a year! Call it the Golden Era of ESPN in 90’s, and Sunday Mornings had Sports Reporters & Outside the Lines were the best shows! Bob Ley & Jeremy Schapp, and other on there did the best investigative journalism in sports media, reporting on great compelling stories. Sunday night was Baseball Tonight and/or NFL Primetime depending on time of year. Yes before all highlights were a click away on Phone/laptop. But the personalities of those presenters were what made you looked forward to.

I think SAS is missing the point. He is talking about how SAS and Skip changed sports media in a such a way that it has become the new format thus making guys like him or that style or format irrelevant. It's not about the information, it's about the argument which is what SAS does. He makes everything an argument. Because that style was different at the time it was new, obviously, it became super popular and others followed to be similar and ride the wave. It changed the landscape on about the same scale as Twitter and KZread. It became the next phase of sports media. It's difficult to go back after a new standard has been set, for better or worse. Or, maybe i missed the point.

The genre Skip and SAS fathered is "chercha" as we say in Spanish. The audience knows the difference between "chercha" and sports journalism. I mean, how many people believe Skip is being objective when he says "LeBron sucks" or some other silliness.

“It’s not the money” lmao. A player has a bad game and the next day the discussion is about his legacy. It damned sure isn’t about the love of the game. The way Skip and Stephen A. have made sports discourse has ruined even the actual sports to some extent. He’s the most watched because he knows how to make people watch to hear him trash players they don’t like. In the type of country we live in, and with the way sports, particularly basketball are trending in terms of player power, certain people want to see them taken down. Skip Bayless built a whole platform on saying one great player isn’t great. He was able to do that because people hate that player. People aren’t watching because they’re interested in the sport or to learn more. It’s third-party hate watching. I appreciate LeBatard trying, but you can’t get through to people who only care about the money. It’s not possible. Different languages.

@violabeaumont3758 the same thing Stephen A has done. Had successful TV shows & radio shows kicking it with your friends giving the illusion that anyone can do it and it's easy. Look at how many sports shows, podcasts and channels there are now. This wouldn't come without the success of First Take, Highly Questionable, etc coming before them

It was entertaining when it was new but now its just annoying. Especially when you realize these experts really don't know what they're talking about, so they are just arguing for the sake of arguing. They are TV personalities who dont know any more than an average sports fan.

  • @Noeau

It’s all basically sensationalism striving for clicks by creating controversy and opposing sides in varying degrees. I like shows like NFL live that have hosts of former players that give their humble opinion and backs it up with video breakdowns. Most of the “sensationalists” are not former players and although knowledgeable, cannot provide accuracy from the perspective that a former athlete can. They just are voicing their opinions loudly, and boisterously and in some cases, intentionally devisive to create the drama that garner more ratings which is basically their end game.

Shock jock sports shows like SAS started with Skip are what gets ratings and it's sad. Dan's point is spot on and SAS knows it. I would much rather watch Max or someone like Mina who utilizes data and is fair instead of all of these people that know who and what teams get them ratings. It's honestly pathetic. Don't hide behind journalism either. Skip is probably the least respected journalist out there. Built a terrible reputation in Dallas and continues on that path.
