Whether the interviewee is a world renowned guitar virtuoso or old friends and KZread buddies, I still stand by The Captain as the absolute best guitarist interviewer to date. He somehow manages to ask questions I didn't even know I wanted the answers to.

@dickfagsandmotherfuc I have actually! Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of fantastic interviewers on KZread and I generally enjoy any content like this, but there is something about Cap's open composure and selection of questions that makes the interviews connect a bit more personally.

The moment where Mic brings the "I'm not good enough" conversation, which is inherant in 90% of guitarists I've ever met. It's why we're always buying gear, & tab books & courses, & why people are sniping at each other online, & it's not being talked about enough.

Man that brought back memories… My dad, God rest his soul, did the same thing for me. As an adopted child, my parents had no clue where my musicality came from… I think it amazed my dad, who could restore a 65 mustang or build furniture from scratch, but didn’t have a musical bone in his body… Regardless, he was so ridiculously supportive of my passion for music. He bought me my first guitar at 10 years old, took me to lessons every week and by the time I was 15, he was a pro at explaining to bouncers and club owners that I was in the band lol… Imagine a middle aged dad who worked 50-60 hours a week having to help me load my gear back in the truck at 3AM on a Wednesday night at some random club an hour from our house…. who then is up, bright and early to go back to work. Not only did he never complain about it, he sincerely loved seeing us play for a crowd. I lost him way too young at 59 years old… That day I lost my dad, my best friend and my biggest fan…. The world and my life will never be the same without him in the crowd. I quit playing for a living a long time ago, but I’m a better musician, a better father and a better man every day bc of the love, kindness and support he gave me. Thanks for bringing those memories flooding back, even if this video is a million years old lol. 🍻

@@roaddog7542 I wish he'd do more! TPS is more in-depth techo-geekery, less outright music-making than the old Guitar Paradiso videos... and when he really sets his mind to making music, he absolutely blows everyone away! interesting i was going to join max shiram i was to busy..i now remember who dan is..good to see his doing guitar stuff.i remember him coming to several of my shows but if i say who i lose my identity here.hs got a great touch.max shiram had my fav aussie player young guy could ben..he made the guitar cry.anyway after several world tours and bouts in Nashville ive learnt that it all boils down to our passion for this piece of wood and steel.captain great great interviews with albert lee and tommy emannuel..alberts history blew me away...as for not hearing yourself live if your super loud in front of 120,000 people theres also playing blind technique. Your 3 100 watt stacks sound like a combo next to 2 million watts of side fill..if your monitor guy is hung over or whatever you have to learn to rip no matter what you hear.im proud i mastered that ha ha but in ears are not the same.i hate them..i really need to hear my 12 inch celestions.i use vais trick ive got custom monitors with 12s in em for my own foldback at festivals..cheers ....

Nut Graf: re: Steve Vai's fame. I actually have a bit of add'l (US-based) info. on this. I first became aware of Steve Vai when Vai replaced Yngvie Malmsteen in the band Alcatrazz (6/1984). I remember this particularly, because Steve took over from Wingnut at the San Diego (where I live) appearance at the Fox Theatre, 2 blocks from Guitar Center, where I worked at the time. All day long, we had road crew members in and out for accessories, etc. Some of my buddies got backstage that night and reported back about Steve's debut appearance. They reported that, when Vai was announced as Wingnut's replacement, there was loud booing. My friends, standing sidestage told me Vai became obviously pissed...and started to bear down and REALLY play. (Picture that, if you will.) Before long, the mood in the place changed (rapidly) to "who the hell was Yngvie Malmsteen." Steve's fame REALLY began that night, if you ask me...even though he'd already toured with Zappa. But, c'mon...Zappa fame isn't exactly mainstream. Not long after this...Oct. '84 edition of Guitar Player magazine hit, which featured a "Sound Page" (playable vinyl insert) of "The Attitude Song" off Flex Able. I played the crud out of that thing...recorded it onto cassette so I could REALLY hear it over and over. 😁👍

"The Louvre is an art gallery in Paris." Talk about understatements... :-D Getting people to agree on any subject objectively, which can only be subjectively felt, is indeed pointless. Gut feeling and goosebumps usually are great indicators for me. The educational value of your shows (Andertons & TPS) is - even though marketing as well, obviously - evident, it's there for people to get to know and question their own knowledge, taste, hearing, talents, sound, gear, etc., on the basis of a (variably) in depth comparison of so many variables and parameters. No problem whatsoever, anyone can get answers from them, however different these answers may be. The head-to-head comparison of comparable pedals from the different ends of the spectrum (David vs Goliath, etc.) makes a choice between pedals easier, be it on the basis of affordability or overall sound quality and features. Those videos are really helpful. Also the possibility of buying now, 'upgrading' later is always a good thing. For me, it's sometimes confirmation bias, other times it makes me curious, and more often, greedy. The marketing certainly works! Keep up the good work, Andertons & TPS! ;-)

in the old days, sending speaker enclosure overseas in a shipping container cost a lot because the boxes are just full of air. so local builders in australia starting getting the components and made their own carpet covered speaker boxes. one guy decided that 'sovtek' sounded cool to put on the boxes. they were very cheap compared to the imports. not long after there was also demand for amplifiers to go with the speakers. that is what the sovtek mig 50 came from. it had valves but was cheap so you could convince you mum to buy it for you.

Seriously the only thing missing on this channel is if they can manage to get David Gilmour for a chat and a jam with Lee... and we'd see if he sounds the same with a standard strat straight into a blues junior amp haha keep it up!

Ah, god guys, I'm 45 mins in now, and have been completely enthralled for all of it... I've not really done much of my work, might be in bother, might be late home.... but I'm loving the stories. Now you've just talked about guitarist magazine and tg mag and all those... Mick, I want to say thank you for many years of that magazine, you and Neville and everyone else(skunka nansies guitarist?) taught me a lot, I have collected almost every issue since 2003 to 2014/5, I got a bit busy after that and can't afford them every month anymore, wife, kids, jobs and that, but I continue to watch you guys, and Andertons, and am always inspired with what I see and the stories I hear, so Dan, Lee, Rob, Simon... thanks for the inspirado! :-)

Absolutely fascinating! Having watched several TPS video's it's great to hear the journey that lead Mick and Dan to where they are now. Also, the Captain as a great host / interviewer. I used to think Jeremy Clarkson had the greatest job on the planet but i'm beginning to re-think that now....

Someone once said that XTC were "the only true *alternative* pop group" I'd say they were the greatest alternative pop group. What I took away from this excellent interview is the role of fortune - luck - in determining the course of our lives. This *in no way* diminishes the hard work done, the talent, the effort, and sheer gumption both of these guys have displayed in their careers. But the importance of luck is undeniable.

  • @breeky_nassau341

Great video!! My philosophy on vintage/tube vs whatever-I love great tube amps as much as anyone, but unfortunately I don’t have as much access to amazing gear as I would like. And just like Mick would settle for custom shop over vintage, I will settle for some of the new tech that sounds as good. I saw the Robben Ford video for Roland blues cube, when he quoted dumble saying that the tech would eventually catch up. And I truly believe it now has. And I am in a situation where I do not have a guitar tech to save me from some of the tube nightmares I have let happen in live situations, and I don’t have backups to my backups. I need that consistency. And my situation is more about songs than it is guitar-everything I do needs to serve the band as well as the crowd. So somewhere in the middle is a guy who doesn’t have a vintage AC30, or a guitar tech, or a backup to his AC30, or a vintage guitar. But he can get pretty dang close and he plays in a pretty cool band, playing songs that aren’t terrible.

This is such an interesting video, I'm in my second year studying guitar and I've gone from playing at home, being the only guitarist around thinking I was quite good, to coming to a conservatoire where you're at the bottom of the ladder! I can relate to the feeling Mick talks about meeting those people who are so far ahead of you and how it can knock you down more than motivate you. Always got to stick at it though!! Great video :)
