    The sad wistful tone when he mentions Michael Collins. Civil wars are a tragedy.

    I met a man in Castletownbere this summer that met him when he was a child, as he was his fathers good friend. He said mr. Breen was a very kind man, gave him a shilling and a pat on the head. I always think he looks so sharp of mind when I see this interview, very impressive man.

    @@Anthony-oq9qc I agree, dev was a person who was thinking of himself, not Ireland. He set Michael Collins up and did a lot other things that were wrong, to make himself look good. I believe, if not for him our beloved Ireland would be whole and free.

    The Norman Catholic Church...? Look up the list of archbishops of Dublin/Armagh and Cork after 1169.... pretty much 100% Norman.... no Gaels... until perhaps the late 18th century. And after that they were a mix of Normans and upper middle class English speaking persons of vague Gaelic background.... The culture of the upper echelons of the Church was always loyal to the English/ British crown. After the reformation until the 1760s they might have disagreed over who should be King of England.... but thats it. The Church after 1169 never supported Irish freedom because it was run by the English.

    Extremely based man, but complicated too. Anti-treaty as they came, but in the end, he went back on the democratic roots of the Irish Republic, and capitulated to the Free State like Dev. He became a Nazi sympathiser to top it all off. Still, R.I.P. Oglach.

  • @GordonGarvey
    @GordonGarvey11 ай бұрын

    People won't like this but he was very sympathetic to the axis side in ww2, and to the republican side in the Spanish civil war, and in favour of our own attempt at a fascist party here in Ireland. He also had pictures of Hitler in his home and sent him birthday wishes. Irish people seem to be in favour of the old IRA and their fight for our independence as if it's something fashionable but seem to forget the Ireland these men fought for would've been an ethnostate in their minds, and most Irish people were against people like him at the start, the only reason you don't hear them talking much on that is because it was taken for granted, they never imagined it would be in this state today. Dan Breen said he wouldn't have bothered fighting for the government they ended up having. I promise you he'd turn in his grave if he saw what's become of us.

    You mean the nationalist side in the civil war right? Also most of the old IRA weren't fighting for an ethnostate nor were they fascists. Most IRA leaders joined Cumann na nGaedheal or Fianna Fail. It was the IRA remnants of the 30's that supported the Nazis and they mainly did it because they believed it would lead to Ireland being reunited, essentially "Englands difficulty is Irelands opportunity."
