Dan Ariely - Why People Believe Irrational Things | Prof G Conversations

Dan Ariely, a professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University, joins Scott to discuss what makes rational people believe seemingly irrational things. He also shares how we avoid certain facts when we don’t like the solution, as well as how a lack of trust in one area can spiral into others.

Wow... When asked, "Do you feel appreciated" in an employee survey, I do not correlate this to getting compliments. That's, of course, "nice to have", but it's the smallest piece of the story. It means that, when I look at my salary AND benefits, "does it match my efforts, my performance, what I invest into my job, etc."? If this answer is no, I will answer: "No, I do not feel appreciated", regardless if I am showered with encouragements/compliments every second of the day. That doesn't mean a thing if I do not see it reflected in actions, i.e., my bank account. Employees are not naive.

Yes you are right. There is no doubt that pay is important. Let me ask you. Say you had zero long term debt (I.e. mortgage, insurance etc). Say you where paid 10x your total outgoings per year. That's total outgoings. What else would effect your feelings about work? Say after listening to you I then paid you 100x your total outgoings but did nothing else. I couldn't agree more. This interview is obnoxious. PROFOUND tangible evidence that Israel is slaughtering a completely disempowered, impoverished community of 50% children. I think genocide as well - but who cares what it is called - it is evil and morally and ethically wrong. This is a silly conversation spouting claims, with NO substantial backing. "My name is Scott. I have a platform. I have probably been bought off for this episode and maybe many others. I make profound claims, don't give examples and provide no evidence - but OBVIOUSLY I am the ONLY one who understand the world." WHO is denying Oct. 7th? IF anyone - a fringe amount of whom I have ever heard. (Having been completely invested in ALL of the news sources surrounding this slaughter) Now - if you are talking about people who realize how much Israel lies - and how our media is lying to us - that is huge. No beheaded babies, no babies on clotheslines, not 1400, 1200. Of the 1200 - 400 soldiers. Soldiers of the IOF who have been occupying and subjugating the indigenous populations (BRUTALLY) I might add for decades - not to mention Israel is living on stolen land and in stolen homes. Mass rape story discredited by the FAMILY of the only evidence - a picture of Gal Abdush. Or is simply a manipulative liar himself. What I see is it is men like him who are the most wrapped up in propaganda just simply not able to keep up with the intellectual capacity of the younger generation. Obviously, not all boomers and not all "younger". But consistently the younger generation is getting news by seeing real life play out. Seeing babies screaming because they have been burned by Israelli white phosphorus. facebook.com/reel/1040063460394340n Or I don't know - a thousand other horrific slow painful death of a massive number of children. There are/were ~30,000 members of Hamas. Since 1997 the US has designated Hamas as a terrorist organization because it has committed hundreds of thousands of war crimes and has laundered tens of billions of dollars intended for Palestinians to literal billionaires and the militias they control inside and outside of Israel and Gaza. Since the time that Hamas launched a wave of suicide bombings and rocket attacks on civilians (both war crimes) during the Second Intifada ... and October 7th when Hamas and other terror cells raped and killed civilians in Israel, the population in just Gaza has doubled. And if you counted those that emigrated and are now part of the Palestinian diaspora, the number would be even higher. That is part of the humanitarian issue in Gaza, the number of humans versus the infrastructure and government running the infrastructure. Imagine if Mexico City or LA or NYC's population doubled in 2 decades ... except all the money for public works was stolen. And bare in mind, prior to October 7th Israel supplied water and electricity to much of Gaza for free to avert a larger humanitarian crisis. Now imagine if all of those cities not only doubled in population but also stopped having elections because the entire international community tried to have an election and it created a civil war in which the progressives were all murdered. That happened in Gaza. Hamas has also been systematically killing bedouins in the more rural regions of Gaza amongst other minority groups. But the civil war following the attempt at an election is why President Obama and every President since then has not pushed for democracy in Gaza. Outside of all of that ... the goal of Hamas is the genocide of Jews and Israel. And it has been for almost 40 years. It is not a secret, they have a charter and publish their thoughts. For those reasons and more Israel is getting rid of Hamas. And a lot of the members of Hamas are Palestinians. And so via the transitive property that means 30,000+ Palestinians that are terrorists could potentially be killed. And it is taking months and months and costing many innocent lives because Hamas wants that. They make more money from it. It is good for PR. And it blocks peace in the Middle East in terms of cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Israel. At any time Israel can stop fighting once Hamas returns the almost 100 hostages that are still being held. But Iran does not want that and Hamas does not want that. What Hamas wants is death.

We lost much in covid, then tried to glance over and move on from the massive decisions made on societies behalf by institutions and government. That eroded unmeasurable amounts of trust which is neither rational or easily discussed. This “stress” as he puts it, exposed an underbelly of a generation that, as Scott puts it, the most educated, but appears to have been systematically robbed over the last few decades of critical reasoning among other crucial soft skills. This same generation now exists under a false illusion of being informed without the skills to discern signal from noise or the quality of that information. With a push towards Marxism and feeling based incentives in higher education and the job market, many are unable to mount an opinion or debate ideas. Very interesting discussion, but the more it unfolds the more it appears like some sort of psyop perpetrated on the society at large. I still don’t understand the half beard thing, but I guess he’s goin for a new type of irony or something.

So much bad faith arguing. We aren't holocaust deniers. We aren't October 7th deniers. We are people who think that terrorist attacks are inevitable if you stuff 2 million people (the vast majority innocent civilians) into an open air prison. End apartheid, ceasefire, give Palestinians rights and a sovereign state. Anything less will just mean the violence continues.

Justifying terrorism… got it Your attitude will ensure cycle of violence continues… Palestinians don’t want to leave Gaza, Palestinians say no way this is our land and we don’t want to be displaced, so there is no stuffing them there. 2 state solution…. Genius… Israel has offered many times it’s the Palestinian authority that rejected it several times… so you should be focusing your comments on them… Ceasefire… yep as soon as Hamas returns the hostages… something you seem to have forgotten will immediately lead to the end of the war… but of course you are so one sided you don’t want to deal with that issue… You care about the Palestinian future… just not enough to stop a war if it means that Israel can also live in peace.

Israel left behind hospitals and modern greenhouses, was willing to help, but it was refused. A group developed a tourism area with water slides, but it was destroyed by Hamas. They named schools after martyrs and dressed children in death uniforms holding guns. Fact check that, and the materials UNRWA used in school to also kill Jews. Jihad needs to look inward and not blame others for the suffering of little children.

A good discussion on the irrationalities that we can create. Towards the end, while I appreciate Dan Ariely's attempt to present a discussion about a solution to the Gaza occupation, he still offers the only ceasefire solution involving Hamas being in charge. Hamas was voted in ONCE and never gave up control. Similar to what is happening politically in Israel right now with their radical side. Why is no-one discussing a UN Peacekeeper solution? Oh politically it's a nightmare with the settlements, but it was tough for the former Yugoslavia. Of course, blaming Iran for the Houthi's drone strikes doesn't help the discussion. Let's move towards a ceasefire and UN led solution. Israel won't like it, but they don't like each other's solutions internally and keep on escalating everything.
