Great song with sad lyrics and Dame Shirley shown her sorrow through her vocal power and make us weep!! This is magic. Shirley is still top of her performance after 50 years in show business.

Shirley never disappoints, it seems I've listened to her all my life. Her diction and clarity is perfect. I was fortunate to see her many years ago in concert, a performance I will never forget.

VICKKI CARR'S RENDITION IS MUCH MORE ELEGANT AND INTIMATE. I LOVE BOTH LADIES BUT VICKKI OWNS THIS SONG

I love this song! The emotion she displays throughout the song is extraordinary and as you listen to the song you can sense the outbursts of emotion that she is going through as she hopes that the person on the other end of the phone is her guy only to find out that it's not him. Great song from start to finish.

It is too bad how few people know of this rendition of the song. Though Ms. Vicki Carr was stupendous at it, there seems to be a clarity and class to the voice of Dame Shirley Bassey that gives the song a little extra beauty.

Margret Sims What? Not sure what you mean by controlled. There were many great female Vocalists in the USA and England . How about Cecelia Black and LuLu, also well known in the US, but from England. GoldFinger, one of Shirley’s huge hits from the 60’s Movie. Not sure how you Missed that, unless you never heard music until The 70’s. If anything, the excuse for music in the 21st Century, is in fact, the controlled.

Shirley Bassey or Vicky Carr ? Actually it doesn't matter. None is better than the other, they're just different. Everybody to his taste. I like them both, and I like the two interpretations of this song.

For this song Carr and Bassey have a very similar vocal quality. Bassey's dramatic, over-the-top vibrato make the difference, but Carr's version is easier to take. Both singers at their peak in the 80's.

+Kurt Burgess For all Shirley Bassey's super-studded star status, Vikki Carr's version of this song was the bigger hit, and for good reasons. Vikki Carr almost stood back and let the song shine for itself. Shirley Bassey suffocated it with her diva dramatics. You're absolutely right. Bassey's version is hard to take. Anyway, great melody but the lyrics are so tragic/comic I wonder if Gilbert Becaud was having a laugh when he wrote it.

True. I think Bassey realized it could work for her, liked the song, but never expected a chart buster. Bassey's vibrato could be controlled to her discretion. Unlike Carr, she was easily parodied for her dramatics, too.

Kurt Burgess I think Shirley Bassey has the better vocal quality, but the accompanying orchestration of Vikki Carr is more harmonic. They are both great artists with the one not really being better than the other. The are just 'different'. Everybody to his taste.

I am a big fan of Shirley, but the Vikki Carr version you feel she is really hurting and is so full of emotion 😔

As much as I love Miss Shirley Bassey (I even have one of her albums) this is Vickii Carr's song. Vicki sounds as though she living the song while Shirley sounds like she is performing the song. Also Vicki's voice resonates better on this song.

Interesting interpretation of the song.. I also heard the Vicki Carr version and I love both equally.. Both of them are powerful singers.. I love them both. At 2:12 , the picture looks more like Nancy Pelosi instead of Shirley Bassey , so that's probably the only thing that may need editing in the video..

This is NOT the version I remember played on Radio 390 in the 60's. The version I remember could have been interchanged with Vicki Carr's voice. .both versions are great. But i think I prefer Vicki's version. Gosh if I had a woman that wanted me that much, I wouldn't leave home!!!!! KRS

"Much more better"? That isn't even English.

My grandmother used to say one should never 'gild the lily' and I'm afraid Miss Bassey is somewhat guilty of that in this instance. A great singer undoubtedly but on this one: Vikki Carr takes the crown.
