Her voice got to be so huge the higher it went! She was in very good voice here - especially considering her age... All the fast (little) notes were on point! Good for her at 60 that she still had the High E flat! Her stamina was INCREDIBLE.

Even in her late 50s-60s she could sing better than today's sopranos

The fact that Dame Joan was still able to thunder out notes above the staff in her late 50s and early 60s is nothing short of amazing!

She is in even better voice here than she was four years earlier at the Met performances.

Her voice doesn't match up with the actual scene where in Lucia is going crazy and losing it. Her voice is just lovable and very captivating that it's hard to relate it to the story that in this scene she is actually losing her sanity.

@@JoanSutherlandFanthese poor young things who know nothing about the art form in general and Lucia specifically continue to shoot off their uninformed opinions all over KZread. It makes me sad that they can’t/don’t/won’t “get” what a stupendous achievement this performance is, and makes me furious that they even dare to criticize it.

My only complaint are - again - in Sydney she's paired with singers well beneath her status.

@@ir3356 Your opinion about her acting isn't a fact, it's just your opinion. That fact is she is a singer, not an actor, but ALL you commented on was her ACTING...no mention of her singing at all. You never saw her live, and never will, so no one cares about your snide remarks. Stop watching Sutherland videos if they bother so much.

@@ir3356 we care because she is historically one of the greatest singers of all time. She is 59 here and still singing this most difficult roles superbly. This role made her a star. Nothing about that can be changed. She is long retired and has left this earth, so her career is written in stone. Maybe go help young singers achieve goals they are seeking rather than tearing down a truly great of the not too distant past. Anyway it’s just a thought.
