DAM CUTOFF WALL - SEEPAGE BARRIER CONSTRUCTION - PLASTIC DIAPHRAGM WALL

3D METHOD STATEMENT OF A DAM CUTOFF / PLASTIC DIAPHRAGM WALL / CEMENT BENTONITE / SEEPAGE BARRIER CONSTRUCTION
The video shows the construction of a cutoff wall to remediate or prevent seepage of water from happening under a dam or reservoir. The seepage over time can cause the foundation of the dam to weaken, potentially leading to the collapse of the dam itself. The construction of the wall is accomplished with the construction of a cement bentonite (also called CB or coulis) plastic diaphragm wall. This is undertaken with the usage of modern equipment that can dig through both soils and rocks. Wall thicknesses can vary from 80cm up to 1.5m. The wall can reach depths of up to 250m.

As usual, one guy (or possibly even machine by itself) is doing all the work while everyone else is getting paid to stand right nearby and in the way, musing at what a wonderful project this is and how work sure is coming along. At one point they even disappear for a lunch break only to reappear shortly after. Wow.

They're building an underground cutoff wall for the base of the dam. since you don't want to be in the business of excavating down 50+ feet of earth just to build a wall and then back fill, you use a device that can chew a rectangular hole in the soil layer and fill it with fluid temporarily for it to keep the proper shape. Then once you go deep enough to hit the impervious bedrock stratum, you pump concrete in, which is heavier than the retaining fluid and it sets into a giant column in the ground. Rinse and repeat until you go the width of the dam you're building and...viola, you now have a mostly impermeable shield so that water doesn't creep all the way through an earthen dam. Simple!

The interim liquid is called Bentonit. Its a clay-water-mineral-mixture, so the walls of the deep hole are not collapsing. The Concretewall created is the backwall of the later dam. This way you can safely excavte the other side, without fear of collaps. You can later also excavate the Water-side, so you get a nice water basin, clean of mud n stuff, since it damages the generator turbines. Im also not a "hydroelectric engineer", but a construction or civil engineer. ;)

So what would you be using for reinforcement ? I noticed that there was no animation for what you'd be using and how you apply the re-bar or some other type of mesh you'd be using. Is there something already in the concrete while it gets purred down ? Because the animation show all you have to to is dig pure repeat . Concrete is not strong by itself unless you have something to reinforce it. So what would you be using and how would it be installed ?
