Miss Ellie was a woman of such strength, this was something. Barbara was a tremendous actress! I am watching Dallas almost daily, and I still love it. These two were excellent!!!

It’s the episode where she caught Clayton cheating on her. She had just thrown him out of the house.

Miss Ellie was from an era where women were trained to be well bred poised, gracious, polite and in control. She always kept her feelings under wraps and did an amazing job as an actress! I love this show!!

While Bel Geddes got an Emmy and is iconic I STILL think she's underrated far as old school actresses. Her name and legacy esp on Dallas seems critically underrated. Picture perfect actress. Linda too! Fantastic actress yet rarely got props her it :/

It's quite telling that they tried to replace her with Donna Reed. I love Donna Reed, but she totally bombed in this role. Barbara is the only Miss Ellie Southworth Ewing.

Wow, seeing Miss Ellie like this is so weird! She was always so in control, even when she was upset about something and this is such a stark departure for her! I do like the way this is portrayed because it seems so awkwardly real, especially the way Sue Ellen is standing at a distance, unsure (and probably embarrassed), while Miss Ellie drunkenly rambles. Top notch acting here from Ms. Bel Geddes and Ms. Gray!

msmithstud Yes, although I believe she knew from the beginning when JR brought her to Southfork that Sue Ellen was unhappy and she knew why. This, however, was a deeper knowledge of it and BBG really knocked it out of the park, as the saying goes.

Barbara Bel Geddes is a sterling actress every scene she owned in every emotion and scenario and her warmness and affection and every other emotion she portrayed made you feel like she was your own mama, she sold it sell and owned it, R.I.P. Barbara ❤

BBG had some amazing acting chops you feel her hurt. Part of me almost wanted to see her and SE share that bottle. 🙃

I was not aware of Barbara Bel Geddes until Dallas aired. She was an incredible actress! I missed out on what must have been a wonderful career.

Loved Sue Ellen's character when they let her sober up

Miss Ellie was nearly at her breaking point. JR had certainly put her and everyone else through Hell and back with the BD Calhoun affair, then the loss of Ewing Oil and their reputations all dragged through the mud, dealing with Bobby's pain of losing Pam, yet fighting with JR. And finally, she suspected Clayton was cheating on her. It's amazing she lived so long.

If Jock were still around, he'd be like 'Miss Ellie...what in the HELL do yew think yur doin'?'

Barbara Bel Geddes was the best actor on this show by a wide margin. Every scene she played was utterly believable and you never once felt like she was "acting." Bravo to a magnificent talent.

Dallas & Dynasty are such good shows.

I have never seen Miss Ellie drunk before. Wow 😲 This caught me off guard.

Watching this now through my adult eyes,I know the exact pain and frustration she feels, exactly.Those words may have been scripted,but that emotion was 💯% genuine.

Jocks death was too much for her to bear. Understandably so. Plus with the way the family started to unravel was painful to watch.

I can't imagine the Donna Reed version of Miss Ellie pulling this off so well. That version barely got emotional like this. In fact, she never yelled at anyone.

I think that the storyline with Donna replacing Barbara should have been different. There could have been a lot of sisters and cousins she could have been acting whilst Barbara was away. In fact they could have had the last episode before Barbara's "break " together . The personality could have been the same as it was.

This was a great storyline, where Clayton befriended that super hot English girl.

This is too hard to watch. My mom had miss Ellie’s voice and when she was in the throes of dementia, she was taking on like this.

If Digger had been alive and saw her in this condition, he could have used it as his last opportunity to take Miss Ellie for himself. I think Digger vs Clayton could have been interesting.

I’ve always loved scenes of the Ewing women interacting with each other.

Gary was the drunk of the family not Miss Ellie. Val always stood by him though.

I just do not buy the fact that Miss Ellie would cry and get drunk. The Miss Ellie that I grew up with in past seasons rarely cried. She would not have cried in this situation, she would have been mad, angry and be tough and strong. This to me seems like a weak Miss Ellie. In the later seasons, they soften her character and she did not have that toughness like she did in the early seasons.

Even though Clayton didn't cheat on her, she doing what Sue Ellen did when Jr. would sleep around. Now she know what it feels like

It's cast members like miss Ellie sue Ellen along with JR and cliff that were able to keep the show going for 13 amazing seasons shows like that sadly will never come on again 😭😭😭😭😭

More than scary seeing the Head of the House drunk

Thinking about the original main characters. I honestly think JR and Cliff are the only characters that made it all the way through the entire series without being killed off, taking a seasonal break or had been replaced.

Yes, that's correct, and if we're being technical, Larry Hagman is the only regular who was there from start to finish because in the first two seasons, Ken Kercheval was not among the regular cast listed in the opening credits. He didn't become part of the opening credits until Season 3.

Miss Ellie liked to knock back a few...but she never got this cranky and mean when she drank. Miss Ellie had really had enough here. I even felt that she came down unfairly on Clayton at this point...because the heartache she was demonstrating was actually over Jock.

oh god that was awful to watch.

by this time there was a huge disconnect btwn the writers,cast and showrunner.....Sue ellen comes home to experience a seriously inebriated hostile miss.ellie acting ttly out of character....clearly disturbed about something n she does not call Clayton or either of her sons....few days later she goes off to the Caribbean alone Clayton walks through the door n asks who's gone to the caribbean? Jr replies your wife....you 2 having problems....clayton replies no.....they all head in to dinner....the nxt day clayton is in his new ofc......every show on nerwork tv does a table read prior to shooting the episode....how cld it possibly make sense that ellie goes off to a caribbean isle by herself not mention it in advance to none of her housemates including her spouse n none of them think it odd n take no action?....Clayton does not say something has to be wrong....i need to get to the btm of this?.....how cld this not be caught at the table read by the showrunner or any of the cast?

The Ewing's didn't need a chaser to wash down the hard booze. Boy Barbara earned her paycheck in this scene. 😳😳😳

They all were alcoholics to me. They all had drinks during the day,when they got home, before dinner, after dinner and a nightcap.

Barbara Bel Geddes was the best !

Very, very odd scene. It is strange to see Miss Ellie drunk. What exactly was she mad about in this plot? She never gives details in the scene. It is particularly weird that she becomes drunk over something that she doesn't explain in this scene. Yet, in more stressful times when Jock died and Bobby "died", we never saw a mourning Miss Ellie turn to alcohol. When a family member died, Miss Ellie struggled with her grief but was always aware that she needed to remain strong for her family. It is very strange (and possibly very poor writing) to have a scene where Miss Ellie appears to be falling apart and drunk over something that clearly is less tough than losing a family member. As always, Barbara Bel Geddes is terrific in this scene but, based on our knowledge of the character of Miss Ellie, the writing for this scene is terrible.

You're just watching this scene in isolation on KZread so it might not make sense but watching the full episode and previous episodes, you would have seen the backstory in which she believed Clayton was being unfaithful to her. Remember the story lines were devised and executed in the context of one hour episodes, not for 5 minute stand alone bitesize snippets for a video sharing site that wouldn't be invented for a couple of more decades so criticising the writing based on an isolated snippet is a bit disingenuous

Agree. Remember she went and got him from Julie Grey’s apartment and he asked her if she brought the horse whip. I am still trying to figure out what made these writers weaken the Miss Ellie character so much in the later years.

Makes a change as Sue Ellen is usually the pissed one!!

Never saw this episode. A bit strange to see Miss. Ellie not in control and she sounded a bit like Winnie the Pooh.

rrickarr Miss Ellie caught Clayton with Laurel Ellis. She thought Clayton slept with her. He didn't, JR did after he got evidence that could clear Clayton from a murder charge. It was either a roll in the sack or Clayton went down for murder.

Before and during the dream season Miss Ellie 's character was so very strong. When Bobby came back the producers made Miss Ellie to soft or in a sense weak. Miss Ellie would have never gotten drunk. She would be angry and tough.
