I never understand why this had to happen. Gary wanted to work the ranch with Ray and I wanted nothing to do with business. Jr was a real scumbag for doing this as Gary post absolutely no threat to him at all

He wanted to show that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Gary was never good at anything. From School, Ranching, and he certainly didn't put in a Day at Ewing Oil. Even when he got his Draft Notice to fight in Vietnam, Jock & Miss Ellie bought his way out thinking it would hurt him. Gary thinks this is "tough". Think of the Deals that JR had to do at Ewing Oil. Bobby was wrong about always being tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. You can't be late with a Work Assignment and certainly not with a School Assignment.

You know what's so eerie. Both she and Pam worked as Waitresses growing up. Valene worked in a Diner while Pam worked at Country & Western Bars to make ends meet before working at The Boutique. Say whatever but both of them were alot more self sufficient and self reliant than Sue Ellen was. Remember how Sue Ellen made a Snide Remark about Pam being part of The Working Class or even about Working at Boutiques and what does Bobby do, he gives Jenna Wade a Boutique.

Here's another fun fact, both Jim Davis & Joan Van Ark guest starred on Cannon in the 1970's. The Star William Conrad (RIP) also was the narrator for The Bullwinkle Cartoon and there was a segment with Sherman, he would be the inspiration for Herman's Hermits and one of the Members Peter Noone was on Britian's Longest Running Soap Opera Coronation Street.

What JR did was right to a degree. It's like telling a Child that it's okay to fool around and play first instead of putting The Homework first. When Bobby said "Vacation" in his own way Gary was on "Vacation" for the past 17 years. Never worked, never earned his keep, drank, gambled got abused.

It was the style back in the day. The funniest part is that although it was Summer, JR wore a Dark Suit during The Cocktail Hour while Bobby wore a Light Suit.

Gary was always weak and would run any time things got tough. Later on in this episode, he goes straight to the bottle after spilling a glass of milk. J.R. was right; they didn't need his whining.

I listened to the audio commentary for this episode. In the audio commentary, David Jacobs (the creator of the show) said that in the original script, it was to have J.R. give Gary a popular oil business that ran well, but Jacobs changed it in the last second because even he thought that giving Gary a great business all just to run that great business straight to the ground would be way too harsh even for J.R.

Before you know, Gary & Valene will head to Knots Landing running for 14 years (a year longer than Dallas). Lucy visited Knots Landing only once during the first season. J.R. made a few episodes of the show and even had a lustful affair with Abby Fairgate.

Did you see how Gary threw the Twig away when JR & Lucy left. It was like it was his way of saying "F@ck You!" wheelinthesky300 you were so right on about JR's evil smile at the end. He knew he had Gary right where he wanted him like a "Punk!"

Did you hear the Horses in the background. It was like they knew that JR was going to cause trouble. Also remember how he asked Cathy Baker about her intentions when his Uncle Garrison came back to Southfork then of course Sue Ellen wearing that Wonderbread Dress they day The Nation found out Who Shot JR.

Growing up, Gary was the "Screw-Up" from Day One. He wasn't a very good student, he was an alcoholic, and Jock & Miss Ellie "Bought" his way out of serving in Vietnam. In 1962, he got Valene Pregnant at 18 and she was 15 and he took off and he was gone for 17 Years. When he left in 1962, JR's fate to sealed, he Graduated in 1961, served in The Army in 1962 and upon returning went straight into the trenches of Ewing Oil and sometimes I think that Jock was making JR pay for Gary being a screw up.

Mainly, JR hated him because Gary was 100% Southworth -- Miss Ellie's little sweet baby. JR saw him as a weakling, and as someone else noted, JR was terrified that Gary and Bobby would unite and outvote him.

I also feel that JR felt like The "Odd Man Out" in terms of Bobby & Gary hanging out. As Children Bobby & Gary spent alot of time in a Treehouse that Jock built for Bobby. They never asked JR to join them thinking he wasn't interested but deep down, he felt hurt not being able to have the "fun" that those two had.

J.R are was sixteen when Bobby was two so there's more than a ten year age gap between them while Gary is just barely a few years younger than J.R which means the reason why J.R never played with Bobby because at that time he was eather finishing up college or learning to run the family business J.R was done with childish things at the time Bobby was growing up.

@@davidcarty7584 I remember reading an Old Book where JR was born in 1939, Gary in 1944 and Bobby in 1949. I could be wrong but after JR finished his Army duty in 1962 and he was also a member of Texas State University (Class Of 1961). He went right into the trenches of Ewing Oil, no real Vacations, always lived at Southfork, never had his own "Private Weekend" Apartment, he felt he needed to be there for Daddy since Gary let Jock down.

"And Then Lucy isn't going to have either one of us again." Hello Val she never had you when she needed you and you can't keep blaming JR. You should have known better than to be a 15 Year Old sleeping with an 18 Year Old. I still feel that to this day Gary & Valene abandoning Lucy still affected her. She couldn't have a proper relationship with a Man and she lost her Fortune the same way Gary did.

No not necessarily. Gary didn't know how to stand up for himself and he wasn't there for Val or Lucy. Remember in The Pilot Episode Lucy told Pam how Gary used to Drink and beat her up. It kind of parallels Falcon Crest in the sense that Chase Gioberti comes back to The Tuscany Valley after 20 Years and thinks that because he's Jason Gioberti's Heir, he has some entitlement.

After Gary ran away, he abandoned his wife & daughter. Then J.R. threw out Valene when Lucy was a year old and fled to her mom's house. Then Lucy was stolen away because crooks sided with J.R. bringing Lucy back to Southfork. With Jock & Miss Ellie rasing their granddaughter, I can see Miss Ellie being disgusted at J.R. taking Lucy away from Valene.

When I saw this Scene, I thought what an SOB JR is, but in some ways he's right. Gary never had to take on any responsibility of a Corporate Nature and he never did in terms of Ewing Oil. Gary was still a Coward scared of responsibility. He could have said "I'd like to Ranch again." but no he was so scared of JR in this Scene. On the other hand it was JR's way of saying "In this Family there are no Free Lunches."

He couldn't do Knots Landing because he was committed to do another Series. He would have been great on A Soap Opera. If Justin Deas hadn't played Buzz Cooper on Guiding Light from 1992-2009 David Ackroyd would have been perfect to play him.
