Dallas Cowboys vs San Francisco 49ers 1981

Спорт

I'm sure a lot of people back then were surprised when this game was over. Last year the Cowboys beat the 49ers @ Texas Stadium in a rout.

My friend and I went to the game thinking that if it was close, the 49ers had a chance. If not, then at least we got to see the Cowboys. We did not expect a 49ers rout. Fred Dean was unstoppable. At the end of the 1st quarter, we all stood up and applauded, but were still in shock. Did the teams switch uniforms? We heard someone yell "Super Bowl!" and thought "Uh, let's not get ahead of ourselves." Boy, was that guy right!

Weeks later the '9ers crush the Steelers and many feel that was the changing of the guard - the end of one dynasty and the beginning of a new one. But I think this game was the beginning of the 49ers '80's dynasty. The blowout of the Cowboys was the first top team they took down - when they probably first believed THEMSELVES that they were a great team. I think this game was the birth of the dynasty. The Steeler game was the significant changing of the guard game, and SB sealed it that they were THE team to beat. Great copy, Richard Waldrup! Love the direct feed without the station breaks and including Summerall and Madden's backround and technical dialog! How did you get your hands on this?? Thanks for the great YT post!!

As the game unfolded the stadium was a mixture of joy and disbelief. This really was the turning of the tide. The team would go on to lose only one more game the entire season on there way to a dynasty.

I remember this game so vividly. As a 13 year old I couldn't believe it. I waited with baited breath the next night to watch the highlights of our great victory on Monday Night Football and Howard Cosell's famous "Halftime Highlights"...nothing....bupkis. America got screwed out of watching our great victory by Cosell and ABC because they didn't want to embarrass "America's Team" on National TV, especially when they were featured the next week. Typical. The Niners were disrespected. Revenge was sweet though. We won the Super Bowl

Same 49er team that failed to make playoffs next year while Dallas got back to another nfc championship game. We should all know it only takes one play to mess up a team psychologically, and that's exactly what happened. In other words, may I be so bold as calling this a "death penalty on the field(referring to the death penalty that happened to SMU)" for Dallas and a "new era" for the 49ers.

Revenge for the 59-14 loss the previous year. Fred Dean and Ronnie Lott had an amazing game here. When Roger Craig came to the team a few years later, the 49er offense was even more potent. I was a kid from Cincinnati watching this game. I was a Cowboys fan because of Tom Landry and Tony Dorsett and Danny WHite. Had the Cowboys won they would have played my hometown Bengals in the Super Bowl and i might have rooted against my hometown team. That Dwight Clark catch brings back bad memories. Of course I rooted for the Bengals in the Super bowl twice against the 49ers and continued my hatred of the 49ers into the 90s when Deion Sanders switching teams was enough to make the Cowboys beat the 49ers.

I could easily say the Cowboys didn't have Staubach, who retired after 79. Cliff Harris too after 1980.

***** Spin it anyway you want, it took a freakish play to beat Dallas and Dallas literally had their own 'Catch' one play later but couldn't seal the deal w/ the fumble. Septien was a money kicker, the best in Cowboy history and probably would of nailed it. The Montana to Clark play would of been a footnote if not for Eric Wright's tackle, that would of been deemed a horse collar tackle in today's game.

***** I give the 49ers credit if anything on the last drive. They mixed runs and passes quite nicely. Walsh brought the WCO to SF from his days in Cincinnati. He didn't create it, and that myth remains. The Cowboys defense didn't exactly have the best personnel vs the 49ers offense. But yet, it came down to a 3rd down and a freakish play whether you want to agree or not. I have yet to see it since but despite that the Cowboys almost erased it in one play. As for the horse collar tackle , it's not hypothetical, it's just an honest assessment since the rules have changed. Yes, the 49ers broke threw and recovered the White fumble but history was almost reversed on that last drive.

One of the few owners who would shake the hands of all of his players. I liked seeing that. The 1980's was a difficult decade for the Dallas Cowboys. After this game and the 1981 NFC Championship game, the 49ers dominated the Cowboys every time they played each other in the 1980's. Best classic inter-division rivals IMHO.

Even for non- Niner fans (with the exception of Dallas, of course) this game was a classic...a changing of the guard... a perennial powerhouse of the 70's grew long in the tooth and lost to a rising Dynasty..yes, Dallas did reach the NFC championship game the following year against Washington and lost, in a strike shortened season but at that point were on the decline after Roger Stauback retired after the 1979 season...Danny White was a decent QB but not the one to lead them to the title..facts are facts, the rest of the league got better than Dallas...Washington, SF and N.Y. Giants would prevail in the 80's..just as the Packers were the team of the 60's, they too got old and became mediocre..the same can be said of the Super Steelers in the 70's...when the 80's rolled out, they got old and their stars started to retire one by one...ALL great teams eventually reach an end..at the present time New England is done while Kansas City is now on top in the AFC...nothing lasts forever, good or bad!...but it's great to see past history and see the greats of the NFL...like Joe Montana...thanks for loading this...I saw this game when I was in college...football was great then

I would say the beginning of the end of Dallas was week 14 of 83 when Washington thrashed them and essentially won the division, relegated Dallas to a WC spot where they lost at home to the Rams in a non sell out in Irving. Then that led to folks souring on Danny white, who lost his job to Hogeboom for most of 84, they miss the playoffs by a game and the aging core scraped by a division title in 85. Once White got hurt in 86 and went from 6-2 to 7-9, that was it for Landry and Dallas, but it def wasn’t the end cuz of any of the losses in 1981.
