Dallas Austin on Left Eye Joining Death Row, Suge Knight Becoming Her Manager (Part 9)

Part 8: • Dallas Austin: 2Pac To...
Part 1: • Dallas Austin on Growi...
----------
In this clip, Dallas Austin spoke about Left-Eye's downward spiral within the context of TLC and her personal life. Dallas said things began getting weird after she signed a management deal with Death Row. Around the same time, Left-Eye started visiting Dr. Sebi as well as turned over to a vegan lifestyle. According to Dallas Austin, the convergence of these things probably led Left-Eye to go crazy or at the very least exacerbated her already eccentric personality causing her to be "spiritually uneasy."

    I remember it seemed like LE flipped on them. The way she behaved at some awards show, very dismissive of the other two. Of course she's dead and cannot tell what was going on. And as a spectator I have no idea of the inner workings of what was going on but she was, at least publicly, acting strange.

    Just remember, Dallas was dating Chili. He is biased on anything that concerns Left Eye. The two were not getting along at the time. Left Eye was also being mistreated but I doubt he will mention that. Chilli was known for getting a bit too close to music producers and execs. I wonder if he will speak on Chilli and LA Reid's relationship? Pebbles wasn't acting crazy for nothing.

    Dallas didn’t like Lisa in her last few days... she didn’t care for him either, so that explains is targeted comments about her being “weird” and her losing her mind. Their beef started around 97’ when Dallas was demanding 4 million and some change for the group’s 3rd project, and Lisa was ready to drop him and get new producers . They settled with Dallas in 98’ and started recording “Fanmail” in which he demanded he be executive producer of or he wouldn’t touch it at all . Lisa had a problem with that because it was essentially her concept, but Tboz and Chilli didn’t want it any other way . and she didn’t think the songs he was producing and writing was worth the money they were paying him. which was proven to be true, because they only spawned 3 singles from that album, 2 in which Dallas didn’t even produce or write &&& L.A Reid granted them no more singles because he didn’t see anymore potential singles from the album... so Lisa was pretty much correct about the ENTIRE fanmail era and album. It also didn’t help that when Lisa signed to death row, Suge Knight went on the Wendy Williams Radio show and dissed chilli, and started a rumor that Dallas was Bi-Sexual (which is questionable lol)

    She was right though, he was charging way to much and on the fanmail album there’s so many duds. Lisa actually wanted the album to be called fantasy and it’s theme was them as fairies and with nature. The girls worked with other producers too but the songs will never see the light of day. The only ones to get released are “it’s alright” and cherry cherry which was Lisa’s song but it was around the time they were doing fantasy.

  • @tenbandsinc.9498

    @tenbandsinc.9498

    Rain i do remember fantasy being a concept, she also came up with fan2see.com which would’ve been the same concept as fanmail, but she wanted to include a website for the fans to write the girls . Also remember “It’s Alright” being considered, even tho chilli acts like she’s never heard it a day in her life... idk about cherry cherry must’ve been one of the 8 songs she had written and Dallas turned down. Also remember “Let’s Just Do It” almost making the album, which would’ve been a good pick... they should’ve let her have a entire rap song like they did on ...ooooh on the TLC tip.

    That's why Left eye called him a manipulator. When she challenged the girls to a 3 CD set solo album. That would be packaged together. LA Reid and Greg Street from V-103 took her idea and used it on OutKast and that's how Speaker Boxx Love Below became two solo albums packaged together. Lisa was ahead of the game with that idea.

    Left Eye just woke up to the industry and the politics that goes on I can remember how much ruckus she caused when she did the math for an artist album budget on MTV...when ppl saw they make barely 50k an album, folks were shocked. I've heard from a good source of mines in ATL that she went to Sebi due to an ailment she had to get help& cured. Dallas I think became apart of the tactics the industry does to groups.

    I don’t think she was weird...Lisa was in a group and it became her identity. Like many others, she couldn’t express herself the way she needed to. TLC as a group outshined who she was and represented and her interests and aspirations. Looking back, i don’t think she truly wanted to leave but she wanted to do things outside of the group. She wanted something for Left Eye as an artist, not Left Eye within TLC.

But that self titled TLC wasn't there best but it was proof they can do it without lisa. Imagine if they work with top producers and they were on a major label, that album would have been huge. The TLC sound is with the 3, but you mostly get the sound from the vocals of tboz and chili. Left eye was my favorite but this is the new TLC. Real fans would understand! #tlcarmy

She said it best in one of her songs “If I woulda told them we was on different planes they woulda thought our flights aint the same” some people still just don’t get it, I believe she gave it her all until she just got tired of it. Left Eye was a character for sure but she was the best part. TLC definitely ain’t the same. Their last album was corny to me.

    It’s so easy to say that because she passed but the same if any other member would have passed it would not have been the same. TLC is just that each individual member holds a important part.
