Daler Rowney Oil Paint - Emerald Green Vintage vs Modern Comparison

More vintage goodness! Emerald green! Is it genuine emerald green? I have NO IDEA. Is it toxic? PROBABLY.

I can confirm that vintage Emerald Green is genuine as I have used and tested that exact tube. You will notice the mix with cad yellow go brownish green and possibly black over time. Also, even the plain swatch of the vintage emerald green will shift in hue from minty to grassy green and there is speculation as to whether this is due to the transparent nature of the pigment PG21 or if it is reacting to the oil binder. Copper based pigments are very reactive and this one is especially reactive. The modern hue you show here appears darker due to them using a bit too much pthalo green in the mixture. The opacity is also much more due to unbalanced use of titanium white or zinc white in the mix or whatever yellow they might be using, to get it more accurate it would need an inert filler pigment to mute the whites. It’s also worth noting that despite what some historical texts might say, genuine emerald green is actually a transparent color. Good video! Take care

W&N should consider a maturation process like Schmincke does. Schmincke store their paints for several months to skim the excess oil off so that there isn't any separation in the tube. Separation is a natural process - and happens quite a bit with the heavier pigments, but it seems to happen to excess with W&N - even with the ultramarines, which is just ridiculous. I love what W&N does though, they're reasonably priced, and have brand exclusive pigments so they're always worth seeking out. They just need to take more care with the milling/maturation. However, I won't complain too much, because their Rose Madders are beautiful, and look like liquid jewels on the palette.

Be careful with that genuine emerald green, I believe it might contain arsenic.

You do NOT want to use the emerald green to paint something with. Most “toxic” oil paints are only toxic if you eat it or breathe in the raw pigment. But they still make Lead White and Genuine Vermillion because you can work with them safely. Emerald green was banned entirely because it’s toxic through the air. I’m sure it’s ok to do this small experiment with it if you throw it away. But don’t paint with it please.

Except for the old Daler series, 70-80s. But I don't think you tried horse head Chinese oil paint at that time :)
