Dale Jr. Download: Kyle Larson's Second Chance

Ойын-сауық

In a Dale Jr. Download exclusive, we sit down with Kyle Larson for his first interview since being reinstated into NASCAR. In May the use of a racial slur during an online race resulted in Larson's suspension from NASCAR and the loss of his Cup Series ride at Chip Ganassi Racing. Larson opens up about how he used that time to educate himself and experience true life change. Now, he's getting a second chance in the big leagues.
Larson opens up to Dale Jr. about his road back to the top-level of the sport, and how his approach and work to get back, needed to not just check boxes. The California native, known to be one of the most diverse talents in the sport of Auto Racing, explains how learning about social diversity has created that true change.
The full interview is available on dirtymomedia.com or any podcasting platform.

Interesting to hear Kyle talk dirt racing, especially during the last 5 or so minutes of the video. That was fun to listen to. As for the return and lessons learned, Cup racing, and whatnot, I think it's cool. I didn't see Kyle coming back this quickly tbh but looking back I can see why that's the case, I mean the dirt stuff he's done speaks for itself honestly. I think Larson is gonna really transcend his name through the things he's faced recently, it's gonna be interesting to see how that all shakes out. Being at HMS for '21 is a prospect that is realized now, and I think that the Cali native will do everything in his power to get the 5 into the playoffs and compete for a high finishing position in the points, if not maybe a championship. We'll see how that plays out alongside the schedule next year and how Kyle and the 5 team will adapt to it. I'm excited. I'm damn near ready. Just waiting on the season to end and offseason to start, at this point.

As a gay white dude, I never took what he said as being racially motivated. You can go to online gaming for CoD or whatever and hear the word f*g or f***ot at any time. As a younger man, I was hurt by stuff like that, but later as weird as it is to say, I realized it wasn't being used as an attack on homosexuals...that's just how these kids talked to each other. It definitely isn't right because it does have that capacity to hurt people, same with what Kyle did but to label him as a racist because of that screw up I thought was a bit much. Words matter, and he owned up to it and made it right.

He’s sorry he got fired. He’s sorry that he lost his ride, sponsors, and the respect of many. But in just over 6 months I am supposed to buy that he is a changed man? Sorry I don’t buy it. I’ve been a NASCAR fan since 1989. In that time with all the good ol boys alive, well, and competitive we NEVER heard or saw this. In this day and age where everyone is watching, he let that word fly. That tells me he uses it in private. It was no Freudian slip. He thought it was funny and ok. People may forgive and let it go. I don’t. And I won’t be rooting for him ever again, which is sad because since JR retired I was looking for someone to follow, and I had enjoyed watching him drive. Oh well.

He did make a crazy mistake but he does deserve to be back in nascar and has gone out of his way and i feel it really changed him because now he knows the opportunities that present themselves can be taken away at any moment no matter how good you are at your craft. Always be happy and thankful for what you have because when its gone. Its gone. Cheers kyle

Forgiveness is very personal, but also, without question, needs to be given to set one free. It absolutely frees the soul. Forgiveness given is as important as honesty and always telling the truth. I sincerely hope that Kyle Larson goes forward and wins a ton. Stays Humble, honest, and a wonderful ambassador for the Nascar Sport, fan Base and future of the sport. I'm a forty plus year fan of the sport. It is important to me as my music. Be the Man Mr. Larson. Thank you Dale Jr, for giving your ultimate best to the sport.

As a fan of Larson, I was very disappointed in him back in April. He owned up and got what he deserved by losing his ride and sponsors. However, I believe in a world of second chances. See him grow as a person, what he has done in the black racing community, I am more impressed. I wish nothing but this best for Kyle with Hendrick. He is the real deal. Happy for him.

So 3 years ago we stop in Lebanon Oregon to catch the Sprint car races on my (and my Fiancé's) birthday weekend. We knew Kyle's team (#57) would be racing and it was my first Sprint car race live. Just as she was asking me, "I wonder who will be driving Kyle's car tonight", the Announcer came on and said "and driving the #57, Kyle Larson!". We lost our minds. Kyle is HER driver in NASCAR (I'm a Chase Elliot fan but Kyle is my alternate and her alt is Chase). He placed well but didn't win that night. We headed over to the pits after the race and Kyle stood for over an hour politely and graciously signing autographs. She was so excited she didn't bring anything to sign, so he signed her purse, the look on his face was priceless but he went with it. It's still her favorite purse to this day and now our favorite drivers are on the same team! I'm a Kyle fan for life after that. So good to have you back Kyle. If anyone deserved a second chance, it's you.

Some realities about Kyle Larson’s whole ordeal: 1) Saying a racial slur will never be ok no matter the intent or how much the internet wants to blurt it out. 2) Words do matter; when you’ve said something horrible, actions are what’s needed sometimes to show you mean it. 3) Forgiveness is the right of those who give it to you, and if they don’t, then that’s that nothing you can do about them do you. 4) Cancel Culture is bullshit. With that said some people and some actions shouldn’t be supported. Support those who are affected by said people or actions. 5) Second chances are earned, especially when a first chance is already as hard as it is like in nascar. 6) If Larson fucks up again then don’t complain if he’s barred from the sport outright. 7) You dont need to live in someone else’s shoes to have empathy, which our society lacks more and more of with each passing day.

I hate everyone saying he made a "mistake". He said what he said ON PURPOSE. He just thought no one besides his crew chief could hear him. His only mistake getting caught. If he hadn't, he'd still be calling people the N-word, and not giving a damn. Having said that, second chances are good, and I hope he can redeem himself. The rest of us have to acknowledge the wrong, and quit acting like it was something out of character.
