Dale Jr. Download: Joe Gibbs' Failed Recruiting Attempt

Ойын-сауық

Joe Gibbs admits he made a full bore run to get Dale Jr. to sign a contract to race for him but Dale Jr. was more concerned about the lunch menu that day instead of a contract.

Yes it does and that’s a great advocate to have on your side. It’s also great when that person can call you out when you need to check up. Junior and Kelley have that type of relationship. He listens to her and he knows that she knows her stuff. Very successful because they have each other’s back. Most important person and truest friend that I’ve ever had is my sister. We both knew that the other would know what to do and listening to each other was all we had to do to be successful. Thanks little sis!!

For those of you who might not have known this. Gibbs was a coach under Don Coryle of the San Diego Chargers. Great offensive coach. Gibbs started the single running back offense that most teams use to this day. He did that so he could add extra Tight Ends to the offensive line, to help block Lawrence Taylor. Most O-lineman could not block LT by themselves. ☠️☠️

I really wish Jr. had signed with Joe Gibbs cause that would've paired Tony Stewart & Jr. together who from like 01-04 just dominated plate tracks working together... I think under Joe just having Tony they would've put more effort into making Jr's tenure a success there... At Hendrick when u have Gordon & Jimmie Johnson you really don't need Jr. to win... JGR was still a Chevy team and talks were still ongoing with GM. Tony left cause of the opportunity to owning a team for free. Coach Gibbs let Tony out of his remaining year of his contract cause he wanted Tony to be happy owning a team. Gibbs could’ve forced Tony to stay. If you were offered half of a team with the other owner (a billionaire) committed to doing whatever it took and giving you almost complete charge of the team for FREE, would’ve you do it?

Gibbs you should have signed Kerry then. His brother i watched at an Arca event and the look and way he sat in the car was deja vu! Kerry sits in the seat and is just like Sr. Oh well tho all good and best of luck to all of the Earnhardts. Hopefully Jeffrey gets more comfortable and packs the punches soon. Just gotta get right sponsors and deals made.

@@robertmcgrath2972 Gibbs went to Toyota in 2008, the same season Dale Jr. would have joined. JGR announced mid-way through the 2007 season that it was switching to Toyota. The deal was already in place. If Dale Jr. had gone to JGR, he would have driven a Toyota

Kind of a loss on juniors side i think, istead of him moving to the 18, they got kyle and 51 wins. Imagine how much more often junior could've won, without the focus all going to johnson and gordons cars. With him being the most popular driver, him winning much more would probably have more fans still watching more today.

Big fan of the Earnhardts, but June-Bug wasn't going to win a championship - EVER. Lacked the commitment and the talent. Too much handed to him that he didn't have to work for after his dad's death.

HighMomentum1 last time I checked, it takes a lot of commitment and talent just to run in the Cup series. And it takes even more to win once, let alone 20+ times. Yes he hasn’t won a Cup championship, but many highly rated drivers have won only a handful of races. I swear so many people wouldn’t undermine him so much if his last name wasn’t EARNHARDT. Everyone uses his father as the measuring stick. Why not compare him to people with similar stats.

@Ironhardt_8 I remember sitting in a pub in far northern WI, one snowy night...it was a snowmobile club event. There was my father in law, a FORD guy, and a big Kenseth fan at the time, and this rough, gruff older dude that was an Earnhardt fan like myself. The Ford guy told the Chevy guys that Kenseth was more talented and would go farther than Jr. Nobody wanted to believe it at the time, but look how it turned out. The one thing I will say is, Jr. did alright considering the pressure he had to carry the torch of ALL those fans that wanted him to do well for his father's memory and legacy. As time went on, it became clear, he just didn't have the talent to drive a loose race car the way the top guys could. They'd tighten him up, and back in the pack he would drift. All good things must come to an end, just like the Petty's and the Allison's, now the Earnhardts.
