Those were awesome days . . . I started lettering Bob Keselowski's late model cars in '83 or '84, all the way up to his first Winnebago sponsored ARCA car. I was working with Charlie newby at the time and we were kind of corporate teammates of Kes. Both running to Chrysler Lebaron's. Kes was running Arrington stuff we were R&D'ing Mopar's, which never could run as good as Kes's stuff. We could make power, but couldn't finish races. Aluminum heads were too soft of an alloy. Ray Nece was my guy in the 60's and early 70's. All my race cars were orange and white because of him. My mentor lettered his last few race cars. I recently lettered a tribute car his son John put together. Watched Benny Parsons get his start in racing. Larry Lemay, Tracy Leslie, Erv Baumgarten, Charlie Newby, Don Saunders, and of course John Nece. Ray helped me A LOT after my dad died. Did it in such a way, I didn't even realize it. Ray worked for Souter Oil Sales, for a time, which was right behind Keselowski's shop. I started lettering Joy Fair's cars in 1979, except for a couple when Mark wanted to try something. Spent an Easter Sunday working on Fair's car with him moving the rear axle back 5" on the Cavalier, long story as to why, but it was his comeback from his bad wreck at MCRT. My sister ran his auto repair business for a year or so after he passed, while the family decided what they were going to do with it. She has the red pickup that Joy towed the race car with. Had it repainted and looks showroom new. I've got one of his driving suits, and his last championship trophy from MCRT. I may start thinking of selling this stuff. Things haven't been what they used to be on my disability. People talk about being part of a racing family, the Mt. Clemens Race Track group still is thanks to guys like Tom Urban, and Bill Barnhart, there is always at least one get together every year. The track's last year was 1985, and we STILL get together. Sorry to go on, and on, but I think the SE Mich., NW Ohio, area is one of the most underrated areas in short track racing history.Unfortunately, too much is becoming, like too many other areas, history. . . 🏁🏁🏁😫🏆🏆🏆🚗🚗🚗🏁🏁🏁

I can't say I cared for BK much at first myself. But that run he made to win his championship, after he busted his foot up, gave me a new found respect for him. You just didn't see guys make a run like that anymore. Sure it was great just to see someone other than Jimmie win for a change, but to do it the way he did, to be the only team running Dodges anymore at that point, it was amazing. And watching him really let loose in the interviews afterwards was nice to see. Or there was the way he battled Marcus Ambrose at Watkins Glen..... That's still one of my favorite finishes. He does seem like a real old school type driver. He's won me over 😀
