So using this video as a general guide, I just disassembled cleaned and lubed a Daiwa A-400RL. It belonged to my dad, he gave it to me in the 1980’s. Caught everything from catfish and sharks to salmon and halibut. Thank you for your video and instructions. I’m originally from Tennesse, spent 10 years in Alaska, and now live in South Florida. Reel needed cleaned! And no, this was not my primary halibut reel, used a 4/0 Penn Senator.

Watched this again for fun. I replaced all the bearings in one of my 7000C today. It is so smooth now. Believe it or not I’m up to six of these now, Rick Stivers of YoungMartin’sReels on KZread gave me a 7000C that he converted to PUM. He looked hard and found the best line pickup arm for the rotor that is perfect - even better than the original 7000C bail arm. I’ll send you some photos of the reel. I want you to see the fine work he did making that reel. Daiwa actually manufactured a PUM 7000C. I’ve seen the schematic but not the reel itself. If I ever found one for sale I bet it would cost hundreds of dollars. - Chris. PS. I have two complete sets of all the Daiwa silver series reels (exc. the 1500C which I dislike). In addition to six 7000C I have four 4000C and four 9000C saltwater size reels.

Thanks mate, this video was really helpful. I've had this reel in the shed for the last 20 years after inheriting it from my Dad, and after a quick service I've just put it on a new Saltist rod. One thing I'll add is the cross wind gear you mention at 11:10 only adds an extra couple of minutes to remove and grease so would suggest this is a worthwhile step.

Hello Dennis, I started with an 8' surf pole and a King Neptune reel, remember those?? (still have it and works fine) while Dad had a 9' Garcia Conolon and Mitchell 302. In early 70's he came home with a 10' Conolon and a Daiwa 7000c and passed his set up to me, I was of course thrilled until I saw the skirted spool in action. No longer had to position the spool out of the hub prior to casting anymore and no sand getting in the hub and accumulating at the bottom of the housing as was the case with the 302 causing that gritty feel. Many times I had to remove the spool and dunk the reel in the water to wash out the sand to continue fishing. I purchased 2 7000c new for I believe $45.99 ea at Kmart back in the early 70's. I much later purchased another three I had found at flea markets for $10.00 each ! Last spring of 2019 I purchased yet another at a yard sale for $5.00 as a spare or for parts, but this reel was in great shape except was missing one of the face covers and had a stiff rotation, maybe could use a good cleaning no big deal. So I go through a thorough breakdown as you do around Thanksgiving every year since I don't fish in winter weather and put them to sleep. These reels are simple to break down, except I had difficulty removing the pinion and bearing on the latest yard sale purchase. I was able to loosen the pinion gear after I gave it a through spray of PB blaster on both side of the bearing, let sit for 30 minutes, but that bearing would not break loose. I tried to pry it out with a flat head between the bottom of the pinion and the housing block it sits in but still no luck and so I stopped as not to break that housing piece the pinion sits in. I then gave it a thorough spray cleaning with brake cleaner, added some oil and grease, put it back together and the reel surprisingly spun like new again. These old reels and mostly all of the older reels can last a lifetime if you do that once a year major maintenance.I still have my Mitchell 302, 406 and 906 reels, Penn 704 and 710 greenies and 704Z. and of course that King Neptune no. 150. I find it to be therapeutic that one tine of year. I just gave you my entire history LOL. By the way, I have never in the those 50 years ever replaced a bearing in any of my other 7000c reels. Built like a tank. So.... do you have a way to remove that bearing without causing any damage ??. Great instructional video anyone can follow.

So - I think you have done most of what I would do. Try putting the rotor back on the pinion gear after you have removed the collar which holds the pinion gear and bearing in the housing. By putting the rotor back on you will have leverage to pull the bearing up and out and if need be to rock or walk it up. That's the best way that I have found to work with a stubborn bearing - Dennis

I Have 5 of the 7000, a 5500 I think and a 4000 . Without a doubt These are the very best that were made . Me and My Dad have hauled hundred of big blues , Reds, Blacks , flounder with these bad boys . He took me when I was about 10 and I'm now 58. I've tried to sell em and buy some new Penn or Diawa , shiny something , But i just can't,,, These are like the work horses and I Love em !

I love this reel and this video . I fished with this reel in the mid 70’s on the NC coast. Wanted to tell you that I replaced the pinion gears and bushings on both my Mitchell 306 reels. It worked like a charm to make the reels as smooth as new. your videos for the 306 were very helpful. One of the pinion gears I had purchased will be sent back. I couldn’t get the shaft back in after installing the new pinion gear. There was a tiny obstruction (metal) inside the pinion that prohibited the shaft from being properly installed. There was a flaw in the interior hole of one of my new pinions. Anyway I had another one and it worked fine.

Thank you for answering my question. Your method for loosening my seized rotor worked like a charm! Fished with the reel yesterday and had a good day. This 7000C is such a fine reel for surf fishing and very easy to service. Finding an almost mint condition one of EBay was indeed fortunate. Another great video!

@@sheltonhall9278 if your 7000C is in good working order with minimal paint loss, a smooth aluminum spool, and all side decals are present $22.00 is an exceptionally great deal!. I got one once for $17.95 but I don’t think these reels were as popular and sought after as they are now. I have four of them and have two custom handles with Gomexus power knobs that I got on eBay. Altogether I have 23 Daiwa Silver Series reels. The 7000C is the best of the entire series and the only one with three ball bearings. You got a great deal! - Chris

I’m looking at this video again because I just got my second 7000C. It is not quite as nice as my other one cosmetically but mechanically it is superb. The 7000C was my very first surf fishing reel back in the mid 1970s. There is no better surf reel in my opinion. It may not be as fancy as modern reels but it will outlast all of them. I have grown to love my Daiwa, Penn, and Mitchell surf reels as well as my 2 Luxor Saumon Mer reels. This is one of my most favorite videos that you have done. I have used your rotor release strategy many times now. It was great advice!

Believe it or not I now have 5 of these remarkable reels, I kept trying to get a spare parts reel but they all cleaned up very well and were in great shape for fishing. I have 7 NOS black handles for my 7000C reels. Most of my 7000C still have their original chrome handles in good condition but they are prone to deteriorate in saltwater. I take great care of my reels so this may not happen to mine. I am going to modify one or two of my spare handles by putting power knobs on them. I’ve still got my first 7000C I got back in the 1970s. It was my first surf reel along with a Penn 706Z. -- Chris

I now have the 7000C, 4000C, 2500C, and 2 1300C Silver Series Daiwa reels and love then all. Putting a nice ceramic sealed bearing in the 4000C made it incredibly smooth and should make it last for many years to come. I think it came from Boca Bearings.I don’t really use the slam feature as I close the bail by hand when I fish with these. Always love this video! Oh, I put the HT100 drag washers in my reels.

I have one and love it,also have a BG, tough reels very well made , maybe not as refined as some of todays reels with instant silent anti reverse, balanced rotors etc but IMO these are more enjoyable to use.

Good point and tip. I usually spray the handle knob and shaft connections with WD40 after everything is done. Your drop of oil will last longer - Dennis

After you got in one of these to work on this week I decided to go back and watch this again. Did you know there were three versions of this reel. I have 3 different schematics for the 7000C. I have two of these variants and the differences are very subtle. One difference is the way the line roller attaches to the bail. Two of the variants use a nut to hold the roller while the most recent release uses a screw. I have to admit I went nuts over these Silver Series reels. With the one exception of the 1500C which I don’t like, I have over two complete sets of all the Silvers - 500C to 9000C. I have 4 of the 7000C and 3 of the 9000C. I know that’s crazy. This video was one of the first ones I watched way back when.

I now have 105 spinning reels. There is no way I can service all of them every year. I have set them up on a schedule and also service the reels more often that I’m surf fishing with often like my 7000C. You know I have a Penn 105 and there is no comparison with this 7000C. I love this reel!

I have 2 of these reels one is made in Japan and the other is made in Korea. I use them when l chunk suid and mackerel, great machines wouldn't trade them with any other reel.

I've since sold it to a friend of mine along with a 10' Ugly Stick that he now uses when he goes down to his condo in Seaside Park. He still gives it to me for the tune ups and line replacement though! LOL

Getting out my Silver Series to get them ready to fish. Got the 9000C, 7000C and 4000C out to prepare them. Also I finally got a 700C reel today. Now I have 16 Silver Series Daiwa reels in my set. I am up to 165 reels now. I also got a True Temper 340 spinning reels last night for my collection. Armando Reyes, another subscriber to your channel, told me about this reel. I had been wanting an Ocean City 310 and 320 but they are really hard to find. I’ll probably never use it for fishing but keep as a collector reel. I’ve used my OC 300 fishing a few times though.

@@2ndChanceTackle Great deal. I have gotten two reels like that. One only had the AR ratchet reversed and I got it for almost nothing. I think that one was a Penn 104. It was new and never used.

Thank's for the great video, I found one at a flee market for 5 bucks, the reverse lever was stuck and I took it apart and clean it all up and regrease it, and I happen to take the handle apart to clean, and to my surprise,,,there is a small spring and ball bearing in there, OOOH DAMN, I NOW CAN'T PUT THE BALL BEARING BACK IN...P L E A S E H E L P ! ! !

Dennis, I have 4 of these now all in excellent condition. I recently was able to win an auction on EBay for six NOS black 7000C handles. Three of mine have chrome handles and I know from experience what saltwater can do to those chrome handles. All of mine are fine right now but I had the chance to get these black handles so I jumped on it. I’ve also been able to get 3 of the 4000C reels too. I think I have 23 silver series Daiwas now. My Daiwa 8700 will arrive tomorrow. I have found out that the only difference between the 8600 (I have two) and the 8700 is the size of the rotor cup and the spool. Absolutely no one has a schematic for an 8700 but I do have one for the 8600. I’ve missed your videos the past two evenings. I hope everything is alright with you and yours! - Chris

There are a lot of similar looking reels from the 70's and 80's, just like today. The Zebco, Daiwa, Penn Silver series and Ryobi, all made in Japan, were very similar at that time. Thanks for watching - Dennis

Thanks for posting. I caught a six foot spinner shark on my 7000c today. The same reel landed a juvenile tiger shark 3 years ago. These reels are tough. Do you ever use an ultrasonic cleaner to service reels? Just spraying and wiping them down works for fresh water use I suppose? I have to use ultrasonic cleaning to get sand and salt out of my reels.

I do you an ultrasonic cleaner on both fresh and saltwater reels when they are particularly dirty or filled with the sand and salt. I also like to take a salt or sanded reel and put it in a bucket of fresh water overnight. It is amazing to see what dissolves and shakes free by just letting the reel sit in the pail. After that, I will take the reel completely apart and most parts will go into the Ultrasonic cleaner as a second pass. You are correct - that 7000C is one tough reel. Best wishes - Dennis

Thanks Dennis great video as all the rest of your post. I'm trying to give my father's 7000C a second life. Everything is fine on the reel except the anti reverse shaft is frozen. Luckily it is frozen in the on position so it not that big of a deal. Any suggestions on how to unfreeze the shaft or is it best just to leave it alone.

There is only one chance at that and it is to soak and soak and soak it in penetrating oil. If there is no give when you fo attempt it, then just ride with it in anti-reverse mode. Any force will rip it up. The on/off setup is a weak link - Dennis

Hi Dennis, congratulations for your channel, I recently bought a used 7000c in box and was frozen. Then I opened it for servicing and now it's working good, and I noticed that it only had one drive gear whasher in the body cover, but looking at the original factory diagram there should be another whasher on opposite side. How many whasher, one or two?? Best regards

Those small shim washers are used to align the main gear to the pinion gear. They take up any slack or variance in the side plate manufacture. It is possible that the factory only saw the need for one washer when it was built or someone lost one or more when they serviced the reel. If the reel is running smoothly, you can leave it as it is. If you want to blueprint the reel, you can add the other washer as it does provide a shield to the bearing in addition to the shim function. Thanks for asking - Dennis

My first fishing gear was a Daiwa minispin combo, and I currently have in my arsenal a 4000c, 7000c, Gs90, SS2000 and a Penn 650 SS. I really enjoy fishing with those old spinners!! Found for $20 a daiwa 1500C. I think it has old grease because it reels very stiff. Needs a good clean and grease job. 😁

I just picked one of these up as a spare or parts reel for $2.00 at a garage sale. Cosmetically it's nicer than my old 7000 but it apparently got dunked and never cleaned ASAP. Internals are all fine EXCEPT the AR override is frozen. I can't get the cam to budge. Do you have any "Plan B" tricks?" I have worked on Penn SS models with the same problem that get resolved fairly easily with penetrating oil and heat.

Heat and penetrating oil are my go to tricks. If this is stuck where it is always on, I would not worry it. If it is stuck off and there is no anti-reverse, then you need to keep doing what you are doing. If you want to lever it with a pliers, you only have $2 to lose! Dennis

I just acquired two of these exact same reels....I took off the old line and put new line on both....both reels didn't load the line evenly on the spool....one was worse than the other. Both loaded the majority of the line towards the top of the spool. Am I doing something wrong? Does it need to be adjusted? any ideas?

Sounds like you need a shim washer under the spool to raise it up and allow the line to gather to the bottom of the spool. There should be one sitting on top of the axle shaft's click ratchet. If it is not there, that would be the cause of your issue - Dennis

I have inherited this very same reel and was hoping to use it, but the handle is out of sorts on it and needs to be fixed. I think it is the bearing. Is there a way to repair or replace the bearing in the handle?

The reel was designed for mono, so that is what I would recommend. If you use braid, then make sure you have mono backing on the spool prior to loading the braid. There is no reason that the reel cannot handle braid. - Dennis

2nd Chance Tackle I disagree that there is no reason it can't handle braid. The problem you can't avoid with braid is backlash. Since the reel has no instant anti reverse, the slack in the line will cause wind knots and line lay problems. You can put a lot of 30 pound mono on the reel.

My 7000c handle is not so easy to remove. It threads on? And has retention deal.

So you have a screw in the middle of the non-handle side case? If you do, then the handle has a through shaft and you need to remove that screw and pull the handle straight out on the other side - Dennis

Hi Dennis...about the Daiwa 7000. I have one my Dad bought in Japan (Circa late 60's) when he was a Merchant Mariner. I have recently lost the spool (overboard...careless mistake). I've been scrounging for a parts reel or a suitable spool to no avail...any suggestions? (Correction...the reel is a vintage 'DAIWA SPORT 5000'.)

If you need to, you can make extras - cut a piece of plastic from a milk container or soda bottle or fast food tray, etc and then use an awl or drill to make a center hold that is slightly bigger Thant the axle shaft. Once you have done that, trim the outside to an approximate circle and that will create the spacer you need to lift the spool and even the line lay. - You may need more than one based on the thickness of the plastic - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Hi Dennis. I watched your vidio on the Daiwa 7000c reel. I removed the handle screw, but the handle will not pull out. Cleaned and applied a little penetrating oil. Returned screw and tapped very gently will not budge. Any suggestions? Thanks. Gordon

That's a tough one. You either have a handle shaft frozen in the gear or it is bent/warped at this point. Do you know if it it stuck in the bearing/busing, or in the main gear? I might try heat as a last resort. I would pull the roll pin on the handle arm to remove that and then use a torch to heat the through pin and see if that loosens things up. You were right to reinsert the screw and tap tap tap. you may try that with the heat as well - Dennis

It is all about the condition and the paint is the one problem area as it blisters and chips. One in good condition could be $50 while those is very good to excellent could go much higher

I have an old DAIWA JG9001. Is it similar? I don't have any documentation, but it still works OK. Anybody have a manual or documentation to share?

Do you have any clue how highly rated the Daiwa Silver series was rated when it first came out? I've tried to find out, can't find anything.

I don't know the initial reactions, but in the day it was just as well thought of as it is today. I will see if I can find some old ads as they may say more. This is one of my favorite saltwater reels and I still use them today - thanks for asking

stupid question, but what is the red plastic thing called that the bail hits? I'm trying to restore a smaller silver series model but its missing on mine...apparently fell off.

Robert - I call it a bail trip cap. I don't think you can order one of these. I believe it was an integral part of the reel body and not sold separate - No stupid questions. You can get the schematic on the Mikesreelrepair web site and check. I did not see a part number for that piece - Thanks for asking - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle thanks for the reply Dennis. That is a shame that it is not sold as a separate piece, i've got everything else back in working order. I do see some daiwa bodies for sale as parts but unfortunately sold for just as much as another 1300c complete. Good thing i have another reel that i can attempt to use to make a mold. I've never attempted to reproduce a part yet but I might be able to produce something acceptable to put it back in service.

@@HuyFishin i was able to make a wooden trip cap, it worked but it was so ugly that I took it off. I'm hoping someday I meet someone that can 3D print one for me. Maybe I'll reattempt and make a mold. The toughest thing that i encountered is how to mount it. The mounting peg is rectangular and I was cutting with a dremel router bit.

@@HuyFishin thanks for jogging my memory about this old project of mine, I just had an idea that I might be able to make a resin mold around it and just sand it down close to original size/spec.

Hi Dennis Is the 700c the same inside as the 7000c? I want to rehab my 700!

They are similar, but the 700C is an ultra light reel and is less complicated. The 7000C is a large saltwater reel. You can follow the process I use in this video and you should be able to get through your reel without problems - Dennis

Would you say this reel is bigger or smaller than a vintage Mitchell 402? Or same size?

It's about the same. The 402 is wider and the 7000 is taller, but they target the same fishing - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle and i guess a penn 704z falls into the samr size as the Mitchell 402 and 7000c ? Im jist trying to get a good idea on the sizeing of some of those older reels

Anyone know where to find spare parts for this reel like the spool?

There are no suppliers left, of new old stock that I am aware of, only sites like eBay and others that reel either donor reels or parts for the older ones - Dennis

Most of those reels have a C But my 2600... doesn't..

Rey - the ones without the "C" were earlier and usually made in Japan. The lever "C" versions were usually made in Korea. Both are essentially the same reel. Thanks for viewing - Denis

CAUTION ....DO NOT disassemble the handle. Having spent several hours (trust me) on reassembly of the handle, I know by firsthand experience. My curiosity always gets me in trouble, but I cannot help it. However, I like to prevent the viewer from getting in trouble like I did. All fixed now.

Thanks for the reply. Why people climb mount Everest? I was curious to see how it worked. Not the first time that curiosity has gotten me into trouble. There is a spring and a 1/8” ball that was very hard to reposition. Finally, I had a very thin feeler gauge that I put on top of the ball, and was able to reposition it.

@@Mahigeer1 Can confirm! I did the same thing (folding handle locking collar/tensioner) both in the name of finding out how it worked and to be thorough in my strip down and servicing! It is incredibly hard to get that tiny ball bearing back into position while simultaneously keeping the coil spring pushed down! Mine sprung out several times and it was a miracle i found it on the backyard paving! Don't play with it unless you want a good 1hr+ of frustration and watchmaker levels of intricacy . That said. its a testament to the amazing design and quality of this reel, that Daiwa placed a spring loaded ball bearing there to keep the handle locking collar from unintentionally loosening and also, it feels fantastic as it clicks when you do tighten or loosen it.
