It’s such a relief that we are perhaps seeing the beginning of a horizon to come of the much desired and extremely necessary filmography from Bela Tarr. Very excited for the Soviet homage to Cuba (that got a subpar director absolutely cooked on Twitter today for thinking they could make some very inappropriate and condescending comments not only towards the filmmakers and their country of origin but towards criterion themselves), and those electrifying performances by Cassel and Phoenix. And mein Gott may the day finally arrive when I get to bask in the glory of Weir’s masterwork

I'm so excited about Dogfight! I really have no idea what they're working on and have rights to that could be predicated as future releases, so I had no expectations. I yelled out loud to my phone when I saw the announcements. Dogfight is my personal favorite River Phoenix film, and he's one of my favorite actors. My Own Private Idaho is his best performance, but yeah this is my fav. I'm definitely getting it in the sale that follows the release and will likely delve into it when I do get it. Very intrigued about what the interviews and other supplements will entail in discussion.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw there was going to be a 4k of I Am Cuba. I always wondered if they’d return to it as it was a Criterion laserdisc before and, as you know, they’ve been releasing 4ks of several films that haven’t been available since the LD days.

Hi Daisuke. I have the laserdisc of Dogfight and in my Top 25 90s movies video from March 2023 I expressed the hope that it would get a blu ray release and that I thought it would be a good fit for Criterion Collection. I worked in a video store during the late nineties, and Dogfight was one of my favorite films, and I actually own it on VHS. It's funny cuz I hadn't thought about that film in a long time and then all of a sudden it shows up on Criterion and wonderful memories come back to me about watching that movie and how wonderful it was and being from San Francisco it makes it that much more special so needless to say I already pre-ordered it.

Hello Daisuke!! Unfortunately, I haven't been commenting much on your channel (my apologies). But I've been following all your videos, witnessing your cinema journey from my humble train. Great titles for April, aren't they? I watched "Picnic at Hanging Rock" because of you, and I still find myself thinking about those girls... Monster movies where the monsters don't appear are quite effective (Memories of Murder, Blair Witch,...). You articulated well the contrast between "Dogfight" and "I am Cuba," the different dreams and fears within the same generation. How do you think the reception of these films is for the younger generation in their own countries now? My friend, as a Brazilian, I strongly recommend that you check out a major release by Arrow, Video INSIDE THE MIND OF COFFIN JOE LIMITED EDITION BLU-RAY. You will love this here.

I've been interested in watching La Haine for a while. I'll most likely get the Criterion release when it comes out.

I must say that I love films already on 1080p Blu-ray being updated to 4k disc, with new restorations/remasters. Having a choice which to buy is IMO great, because I don't need/want every film on 4k, but there are films which I want in the best available format: Werckmeister Harmonies is such a film. For me, though, other than the Three Colours Trilogy (which I now own on DVD, Blu-ray and 4k!) I don't have any films in my collection of the Collection, I feel a great need to update. To me, THE most important quality threshold is, whether the picture/sound quality melts away and I can forget about that and sink into the film itself. I feel I can with all my Criterion Blu-ray's.

Daisuke, my friend! I'm always so happy to hear your thoughts on the upcoming Criterion releases. It is one of my most anticipated days of each month. No one raises excitement for these new announcements like you do. It is so cool to see La Haine and Picnic at Hanging Rock being re-released, giving us the opportunity to hear more of your thoughts on those great films! It was hard for me to not include La Haine in my top 10 first-time Criterion viewings in 2023. I loved it so much! I'll also never ever forget Picnic at Hanging Rock and your enthusiastic praise that prompted me to purchase it several years back. I still think about that movie often and think it is obviously a major inspiration for one of my all-time favorite television series *The Leftovers* . Yet again, you teach me so much about the titles I have not heard of and might have otherwise dismissed to a certain degree if it weren't for your exciting introductions to these films. If only I could afford them all! Please take my next comment with a grain of salt as I'm not legitimately upset but I do have to mention how it was like torture to see the Mark Frost lamp and your vest that is very Great Northern Hotel appropriate but not get to hear your thoughts on another upcoming release through Criterion titled Lynch/Oz! I was so looking forward to hearing your take on that announcement. Though that is a release set for March of 2024 and is a Janus Contemporary title. Hopefully you will still speak on it one day. It was still pure joy for me to hear you talk about these other titles this morning with a "damn fine" cup of coffee "as black as midnight on a moonless night" in hand. If it was okay, while I'm typing this comment, I want to share that I watched *The Outlaw Josey Wales* and *Under the Silver Lake* for the first time yesterday. Wow!! I don't think Josey Wales is my new favorite Western of all time, but it was most definitely a reminder of why I shouldn't sleep on that genre like I sometimes do. I shall "endeavor to persevere" in watching more Westerns. As for the Andrew Garfield starring film Under the Silver Lake, I am of two strong opinions on it. I thought it was a potential modern classic "neo-noir" but I sometimes have critical thoughts on the "A24" production style that is sometimes a distraction in my mind and it's hard to describe. To me, the film was about a guy whose girlfriend broke up with him and he really loved her dog so he was trying to make sense of life with great amounts of L.A., Hollywood, or modern mental health themes abound. Anyway, it was interesting to say the least with my initial thoughts. Also, I convinced my mom to borrow Carlito's Way and am so stoked to get a chance to talk about that again soon as I can't wait for her to watch it for the first time! Sorry to always be rambling, but this year is off to an exciting start in terms of cinema/TV viewings! I also got to share The Shawshank Redemption with someone who had never seen it and it was beautiful as always to watch my DVD for what had to be the millionth time again. Could you perhaps speak a little to why you consider the DVD format as so important? Is it mostly to do with availability to those who never took the leap to Blu-ray and beyond?

I Am Cuba is an excellent choice. I am also happy to see Dogfight cause it looks like a great movie for someone who haven’t seen it.

Picnic at Hanging Rock is a stellar piece of cinema

The I Am Cuba release is surprising in a good way. Looks to be my choice from this month and I agree with the amazing visual.

Dogfight sounds interesting, here’s hoping it comes to UK Criterion 🤞😬🤞

I have already double dipped on "Picnic at Hanging Rock" (dvd and blu-ray), and won't pick up this version. This will be the fourth format that Criterion has released this title, and I think that the extras are unchanged. I probably should have picked up Second Sight's 4K release (which includes both cuts of the film).

They need to do ALL of Tarr, hopefully sales will let them consider doing a sweet set for him.

Arbelos has already released two of his films in the US on blu-ray so they have the rights to Satantango and Damnation as far as I know. I would like to see Criterion release The Man From London at least, however.

Daisuke a shame they didn’t wait one more year with La Haine as it’s 30 yrs old next year they could then add more value by adding a new doc as that ten years on is out of date.that word New 4k scan it’s not it’s the same scan BFI used a few years ago for their Blu-ray set , this film launched Vincent Cassell.

In my opinion Criterion should have brought out a film by the great cinematographer Nestor Almendros called ' Improper Conduct ' or ' Mauvaise Conduite ' which deals with the persecution of homosexuals under Castro and an ugly page in Cuba's history. As a companion piece to ' I am Cuba ' I consider it along with others to be a fine film by a man who went to France and was cinematographer to Eric Rohmer's films along with other great directors. A sad lack of juxtaposing two viewpoints.

I think that is a really excellent point.

Picnic hasn’t got the 4k of the directors cut which was released by second sight last year. criterion are getting lazy with these upgrades they really don’t have to do that much work to prepare these not very progressive thinking.
