Eric, I have always loved singing , but started to shy away from it because I was told my voice was not unique enough. A few years ago a friend heard me singing to myself and encouraged me to join the church music team, I was doubtful but this friend reminded me that it didn’t matter what we sounded like, what mattered most was praising and glorifying God with what He gave us. And so I did. I did, however , started to notice that my throat would hurt a little after singing for a long time. I recently felt discouraged because I could not hit certain notes and I could hear that I was straining my voice a lot. I was starting to lose tone and began sounding airy. I recently came across your story of how you started singing and that inspired me and gave me hope. I started doing your daily vocal exercises and have noticed a difference in my voice and for the first time my throat did not hurt. Sorry that this is so long, but I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to post your videos and for sharing these treasures on your KZread channel. It means more than you might know. All the way from South Africa

Used to train so much with your older videos and eventually got too discouraged and gave up... I'm back now in college and a bit wiser, more patient, and willing to trust in the value of exercises and my body's natural reflexes. I don't know how to thank you enough for sharing your story and your lessons; I have yet to reach my goal but credit so much of my improvement thus far to you :)

Hi, I wanted to thank you for all the videos you make. I've been singing for years but since I learnt by myself, I've been singing with my throat ... And since I was doing that, I couldn't reach some notes. It's a reflex that my whole body took while singing but it's very tiring. Now, thanks to your videos i can sing and reach higher notes easier. But for those, who, like me are used to singing with their throat, it's probably harder to get rid of those bad habits. Thanks a lot!

Honestly, the best instruction on how to use the straw ever!!! Even better than Dr Titze himself (the inventor). I actually have the Singing Straw Pro and was able to feel all the things mentioned in this video (so cool). My issue has always been when I get to the higher notes, while using the straw, my vocal cords start distorting. I know I don’t have nodules/polyps b/c an ENT sent a camera through my nose into my throat. I’m not letting any air out faster than the point right where my Solar Plexus starts moving outward. My speaking note is about D#3, and this starts happening at G#4 (around my first break/passagio). It’s a touch painful - like how a voice distorts while screaming (even tho my volume is minimal). Any ideas why this might be happening? It’s the only reason I rarely use straws. I’m a bit afraid of hurting my voice permanently.

Hey Eric, thanks for posting these videos. I'm hoping you can answer a question. If you could give a rough percentage of focus on particular areas while singing what would they be. Ex: 20% placement, 40% support from diaphragm, etc. I've been practicing for a while and I see improvements in the individual areas but there are still missing pieces and I feel like it's due to putting too much emphasis on one thing over another. Maybe there's no hard answer for something like that but I'm curious on your thoughts. Thanks!

hey Eric. Love your videos, you are a masterful teacher. I have one question regarding dynamic and the straw TOSCE's. Should the body always respond accordingly with the dynamic? i.e When singing at low volumes, the body only doing as much as is needed to produce a stable sound? When making a single tone with the straw, sometimes I might do a crescendo into a decrescendo, and my body reacts thusly as well, meaning my ribs flare and I extend in parallel to the level of volume being produced. The alternative that I am thinking of is having a more engaged body the entire time that I make the note. I assume that the former example is correct, but just wanted to check. Thank you and much love for how far you have helped me and many others develop their voices.

Hey Eric, lova ya man! You are truly a revelation for me and for this exact reason I never wanted to get a personal coach, cuz i feel too many people are kinda "inbetween walls" and treat everything the same when it might be wrong. And I trully been taught wrong. Thank you for this vids!! But I have a question. I`ve been doin breathing exrecises and my voice actually sounds like better, firmer, just more :D But when Im doing this with straw, my voice is all over the place. Like, "voice cracks", not hitting the tones (especially head voice) and I just wanna know if thats normal or nah?

Chris Liepe showed me compression for Chester Bennington type distortion or screaming and I pretty much only been using yours. He teaches a little more aggressive which the style he’s showing is a little more aggressive too. But he goes lighter like you do for clean singing. But I actually didn’t realize I was supposed to be using compression the whole time. I was trying my hardest not to squeeze the abs not realizing why I couldn’t get it quite like yours. Well anyway I just realized some thing I thought I would share it with people. As you’re doing this if you’re feeling the compression in your stomach hold it and see if it is blocking the airflow. And if it is you shouldn’t be feeling it in your throat. So if you pause and block it and take a gulp you can see if you’re blocking it with your stomach muscles or if you’re incorrectly using your throat. If you can gulp and move your vocal cords around freely then I guess you’re doing it right. I guess technically I’ve been doing compression the whole time but I was trying my hardest to let my abs naturally move without making them and that just ended up with me doing the compression using my vocal chords. Wondering if you think the gulp is a good tip for compression. Vocal chords move freely with air being limited feeling tons of work at the stomach, and you really feel the runway on this one.

Aw, only part 1 and 2? I thought there were 4 parts? I injured my voice 10 years ago through over-use, and I just kind of gave up. Nodules are pretty bad once they've become solid, and nobody wants to give you surgery for that anymore. Thought I'd give your vids a try yesterday and managed to hit a few notes in my range that have been inaccessible to me for years. I've realised how many bad habits I've developed over the years, too. I'll try this again today and see how far I get. Tend to get discouraged when my voice squeaks out of existence or disappears, though.

Hi. I had one problem while doing this exercise. So I've been taught to change the vowel sound and shape as I go higher so when I was trying to do an "ooh" with the straw in my head voice, my mouth and jaw wanted to naturally move away and open into an "a" or"ah". As a result the sound was produced outside of the straw as opposed to it coming out of the straw. Does this makes sense and is this natural?

Aww , that breaks my heart . Don’t give up . I tend to believe that if you really want something it will come . Just sing , everyday , keep using your voice . Sing along with songs . I’ve know friends who didn’t sing in tune or well , really improve just by doing it regularly . The brain and body connection all takes time to happen , longer for some than others . Here’s an example . As a child I drew pictures a fair bit , I became quite a capable artist . But as an adult I stopped drawing for many years . When I went to an art class I was shocked to discover that I could no longer draw ! It was really hard initially and it took some time but then suddenly those muscles and the brain connection fired up and miraculously I could draw again! I stuck at it , just , as I knew that once i could do it . So luckily for me I had that experience . If I hadn’t I most probably would have given up , unless I had a burning passion to do it! It also took having a great tutor , who walked around the room & spoke while we were drawing , urging us not to give up . He really understood the psychology of it , that a large part of the skill was confidence and perseverance . Singing is similar . I think many people give up because initially they don’t get the results , when possibly with just a little more effort and time , something may have just suddenly clicked , and that skill would start to develop . If you love to sing , just keep doing it . Joining a choir was how I improved . Singing with a group so it doesn’t matter if your not perfect . But it’s regular practise and strengthens the muscles and the mind to be tuned in musically . Keep trying !!

Vibrato should come naturally with proper technique. So just practice! Age doesn't affect singing. :)

There is a gap between my chest and the toppest part 😭. There has always been after puberty. And I don’t know how to fix that 😩. I’ve tried everything. Every training there is. Lip rolls. Gargling. Yawning. Light coughs. I’ve made peace with it. Like my voice is boxed. I either sing in chest voice(then it sounds too tense or heavy) or I would sing in a head voice to compensate for a belt voice(but then it sounds weak and disconnected). There is no middle ground 😔.

Not that we have a gap. There is a sweet middle spot. It was just never used, and feels weird when we do use it. So we tend to stay away from it, believing that it's wrong to sing like that. At least that's what I experienced. I suggest you try to record yourself singing or lip roll from head voice to chest voice, but target the weird part in the middle. As Eric says, no forcing. Everything should feel easy, but might I add, weird for people like us. Then iron out your top-to-bottom lip rolls. Make sure you at least tap the middle weird part. At least that's what's worked for me. Still feels kind of weird sometimes. But I just embrace them now, so long as they're not forced.

Please Sir can these techniques be applied to a Bass vocalist......? If yes! Then please do a video explaining it using a Bass vocal even though your not a Bass vocalist. At least a chest voice Register will be awesome. If No! Please give your expertise concerned about it. Thank you very much!

I'm a bass-baritone by nature, and chest voice is certainly demonstrated in this video. Nonetheless, these concepts of healthy body connection and reflexive responses can be applied to any pitch, regardless of register. Respectfully, I ask that you please make sure to actually watch the video in its entirety before asking questions.

No. In fact, you may want to try pinching your nostrils closed (wash your hands thoroughly first 😅) as you vocalize through the straw, until you're certain that you're no longer exhaling through your nose.
