I did the same to my daughters slime barrel I put a cheap battery powered tea light candle in the bottom and it makes it look like the embers are actually glowing hot.

The tea light is a good idea, gonna have to raid the wife's closet.

Refrigerator box should work for a dwelling, and empty food containers is a good idea.
