Such beauty! I'm a retired florist. I learned from my floral design instructor, Ann Patrick, how to extend the freshness of cut flowers. Here it is - just in case you are interested. 1) have a bucket of water to place the cut flowers, right after you harvest them. 2) Optional; however it works amazingly great especially with hydrangeas, place a wet paper towel over the bucket of cut flowers 3) If available, place in a cool/dark place, or in a flower cooler, if you have one. Extra tip: It is not recommended to tough white flower petals, as they will damage/turn brown easily. I really enjoy your videos. After you take the out of the bucket with water and set them on the table, you could increase their freshness, by re-cutting the stem before placing them in water again. The flowers may get an air bubble, which can prevent them from taking up water, after they have been out of the water for a few minutes.

Absolutely beautiful. My dahlias were doing pretty great until about a week ago when they all developed some sort of curly, gnarly leaf issue. The buds all became really tiny and gnarly too. I'm so sad thinking my season is over since I only have 10 plants and they are almost all infected. I cut them all down to where the leaves look relatively normal and sprayed. Hope I'll get some healthy new growth and maybe flowers for October.

Don't you think all Dahlias are "unicorns and butterflies"?! :) Having a good first season this year, already placed my order for next year including Gerrie Hoek, among others; Black Satin was the free gift. The color is a bold move for me but I like the contrast with the others. Can't believe you didn't have to stake, my garden is a maze of posts and poles holding everything up...even with the pinching...LOL!

Beautiful. I did a small cut flower garden for the first time this year. I had success with some things and failure with others primarily my dahlias. I planted only 10 and they all came up and were doing great. Some were just starting to produce buds when we had a week of really rainy weather back in July and I lost them all to rot. Disappointed but lesson learned and have changes in mind for next year. All that beauty inspires me to keep trying.

I clearly didn't do a good job of chasing the rain away yesterday. I'm in south central PA and we got about 7 or so inches of rain from Ida. I walked around this morning and everything just looks so sad from being so waterlogged. Beautiful day out there today so hopefully things dry out well. This year my dahlia area had extra rain water directed to it due to a taper in the yard. I never realized how much extra rain water went through that area until I tried putting dahlias there. We are redoing that taper so hopefully next year will produce better results.

Hey Debbie, I'm in zone 7 Richmond and have found that a dahlia called Natalie G bloomed all summer for me this year. But this is its second year growing and I didn't take it out of the ground last year. My Myrtle's Folly is a bust. It also took 2 years in the ground for my Blue Boy to get going. Dahlias in our area tend to wait until it gets cooler before they start blooming.

Our winters are usually mild but this year we got 6 inches of snow and negative 13. Very unusual!!! But I didn’t lose any of my plants. I did wrap burlap around my few potted evergreens. I don’t have a lot invested in dahlias so I’ll try overwintering them.

@@cherylcarlson3315 You mean to not drive into a bridge abutment and end it all? I didn't have energy for anger. I just make sure I'm topped up with all the vitamins, minerals, omega 3s, and take muscle relaxants when necessary, aspirin sometimes, low dose naltrexone (although I don't know......I guess it helps but if I do some activity that goes past tolerance levels it hurts like hell). Plus my thyroid was low so now I've got it as good as it can get. All sorts of stuff happens together and sorting it out is like a lifetime job. I was so exhausted, it took me a few seconds to figure out why trying to fill my gasoline car with diesel wasn't working. It was THAT bad. I had to fight the doctors to get what I need and it took years. It's hard to advocate for ourselves when we are so weak and sick. Medicine is misogynist even the women doctors. It's sad but true.

I have completely fallen in love with dahlias! Are there any tricks on getting them to last longer in the vase? I only get about 3-4 days out of my Cafe Au Laits. Ordering a bunch for next year.

I think you don’t need to stake if you have them planted close because I ran out of stakes and have a couple plants right next to each other and they aren’t staked either and both plants are upright and not flopping. Any tricks to getting better vase life? I end up not cutting mine because they don’t last. Also virginia gets so much rain I’m losing some to tuber rot. I’m wondering if I mulch better if I could keep them. So sad my jowie Mirela is my first bloomer and the others I’m still waiting on.

You can pick at any time, just cut 12 hours in advance and store in a cool place in air temp water. I cut in the evening so they can rest and hydrate overnight and my customers say they get over a week out of the dinnerplates.

I grow and sell the flowers from 135 dinnerplate dahlias in my roadside flower wagon. The secret to hydrating them properly is to cut them in the evening, place them immediately into air temp water (I just use my hose and a bucket) and then keep them in a cool - not cold - place overnight or for about 12hrs. This lets them hydrate and rest before being exposed to the heat and sun of the next day. When I started cutting in the evening rather than the morning the difference was obvious.
