Dados with the Radial Arm Saw... bad idea?
My table saw didn't do the job, the router was a flop, so how did the craftsman radial arm saw do?
I picked this up off marketplace for $100 and it should do the job. As you will see in the video I ran into a few issues but I can make it work and the nice thing is it will accommodate the full dado stack and should make short work of the 112 half laps I need to cut!
My gear:
I use the Audio Technica AT2020 XLR because I wanted to be able to record music occasionally. If you do not need that then you could just go straight for the USB version and wouldn’t need the phantom power or extra cables. The external recorder is a must when using a cell phone and will help with audio sync when editing.
Zoom H1: amzn.to/29K9pJR
Audio-Technica AT2020: amzn.to/29TnIdv
Phantom power: amzn.to/29LF3CV
XLR to USB cable: amzn.to/29YBoUW
XLR Microphone cable: amzn.to/29YCe4g
Don’t forget to subscribe, like, leave lots of feedback, advice, suggestions, etc. but most importantly get inspired to get out of your routine! Stop tapping the screen on your phone all day and get out there and learn something new by doing!

You are good at showing how not to use a radial arm.

Hey. Either make the time to make a quality table and tram the machine in level, plumb, and square-- or make the time to sit around in the emergency room while they figure out how to reattach your left thumb. These can be really good machines, but they are NOT plug-n-play.

Is there some reason with a dado blade you would be pulling the blade through the workpiece? Seems to me that would cause kickback kickback and possibly even dangerous. I started the best to push the blade away from me. Maybe it's just me✌️

The table has to be TRAMMED. That means it has to be dead parallel to the plane defined by the machined race in the arm. The simplest way to calibrate a Radial is to put leveling feet on the entire saw/stand, and then level the underside of the arm. That way you only have to level the table to get it in tram, you don’t have to turn the motor arbor down and tediously measure the surface of the table at multiple points.

Wow! Pay attention viewers! Don't do this with your radial arm saw! Find someone who knows how to use a radial arm saw. BigRedFishDad is not the expert you are seeking. His methods are sloppy and dangerous. Radial arm saws are very flexible and helpful if you know how to safely use them. In my opinion, a radial arm saw is the only saw you need if you study its capabilities, methods and safety measures. Don't listen to BigRedFishDad in this video.

you are wrong about that. The factory book clearly says to pull the saw from the fence through the wood. Pushing the saw toward the fence is warned against in the factory book. He did many things wrong, pulling the saw was not one of them.

You don’t understand the radial. The ARM on the radial is heavy iron and stiff. The saw will NOT climb out of the cut unless you bought a crappy Radial. ( miter chop saws you reverse cut with because the arm is floppy and can climb out of a cut easily. ) YOU ABSOLUTELY pull the radial saw towards you in cross cutting. Its NOT dangerous. It pushes the wood down and toward the fence, the exact same way a cross cut sled works on a table saw, except the blade CAN’T kick back at you because its turning the opposite direction. The only thing that scares people about the radial is that you don’t really PULL the saw thru… you mostly CONTROL the tendency of the saw to pull itself thru the cut. The first time someone uses a radial they often are surprised by the fact that the saw feels like its pulling itself thru the cut and they aren’t expecting it… but that’s just the first time. Once they understand that they are simply guiding the saw thru and controlling how fast it pulls thru, its the safest saw in the shop. Not only that, but in Ripping with the radial, it can not kickback at the operator because you don’t stand in line with the infeed side of the blade. You stand in front of the table- if it does kick, it kicks to the right or to the left, never at you. That’t why I’ve met over a dozen folks missing bits of finger or eye to a table saw, but never met anyone who lost a finger to a Radial. The hand you pull the saw with you literally CAN’T cut. And unlike a table saw, you can see the entire blade the whole time, so its easy to not have your other hand in the path of the carriage.

Dude, you need to slow down and learn to use that thing. Those are not a real user friendly saws and can really hurt you. First tried taking a 3/4 inch thick cut and got a kickback and then later, you pulled your workpiece out from the fence with the saw in the out postion instead of pushed in. That time you almost had you work piece taken away from you. Lots going on in such a short video. Be careful.

Ha...I love the saw! People should not do what they are not capable or scared of. Read, research, and if it still scares them then pack it back up and sell it. btw... I fixed the table in the next video before I actually started cutting 112 laps.

@@BigRedFishDad The wording of your title shows that even you are aware of the mistakes/close calls you had. At the very least you should address them more completely in your video to help others not make the same mistakes (they may not be as lucky as you were). Love it or not, that doesn't make your technique safe. You should've followed your own advice and studied up prior to firing up this saw. Good luck!

There is junk all over the floor where the work is being done - trip hazards can cause an out of balance person to stick a hand into the saw. The saw is sort of outside - but the wind is blowing the sawdust right into the face of the operator, withe no mask. I have to agree, this video needs deleted, or more warnings added to the start to point out almost everything is done wrong here.

@@rickyfranceschi9782 I use wood clamps on the arm as a stopper on whatever width of wood I'm working with to keep the blade from jumping forward in case it bites in. Between that and a taller fence it's much safer. I've had that blade dig in and bog to a stop but it definitely wants to walk forward so a good grip is necessary far more than when just using a ripping blade. Dudes lucky it didn't grab that board and pull his hand thru there. That adjustable dado blade is a strange setup but once I got use to it I love it!
