Dad's Army & Beyond: The Frank Williams Story [2008]

Фильм және анимация

I produced this documentary for my degree and it was later shown at the BFI's National Film Theatre in 2008 as part of the 40th anniversary of "Dad's Army" celebrations. It was only shot on MiniDV, so please forgive the basic quality, but Frank, as always, gave a great account of himself and I thought fans would enjoy seeing this. Filmed and directed by Mervyn Cumming.
Update: I am deeply saddened by Frank's passing. He was a glorious man and became a very close friend. So many happy memories. RIP Frank, love Ollie x

An excellent documentary about Frank Williams. You enabled him to fully tell the viewer, all about his acting career, and it was very interesting indeed. Though, you wouldn't get anything of this quality on network television today I'm afraid, BBC or otherwise. If it were done, the presenter would be the focus and do all the talking. When Frank's career started TV was the big thing, but it's golden days are long gone, and nowadays terrestrial television is in a state of decline as an entertainment medium.

In every interview he's given, he's always come across as an extremely nice and unassuming man. Thank-you so much for posting this. How short-sighted of the BBC to turn you down. Shame on them.

That was really enjoyable. Especially for me as a living connection to my past. My parents loved Dad's Army, as we all did as a family. I was 12 when the series began in 1968, and much to my suprise and shock I am now 65! Listening to Frank state that the show was the happiest period of his life, parallels the happiest times of my childhood.

When you compare Frank and his contemporary's to the actors on our modern film and television screens you realise how much we have lost. Today there are just characterless character actors.

Do you still have contact with Frank or perhaps Ian? It would be great to meet them. I've been a fan of it for years, and as I grow older and see important childhood people pass, it has given me a kick up the ass to get meeting them at conventions. Do you know if either of them are going to any soon?
