The sitcom ran for 9 series and 80 episodes in total, plus a radio version based on the television scripts, a feature film and a stage show. The series regularly gained audiences of 18 million viewers and is still repeated worldwide.

Authenticity is vital to Perry, who remembers the time he was at Rada, rehearsing with fellow actors, when a secret onlooker turned out to be George Bernard Shaw. “He said, ‘I enjoyed your show tremendously. I laughed a lot. But you’ve got to understand one rule of comedy: you must have reality, otherwise it’s rubbish.’” In any case, thanks to its successful repeats Dad’s Army is guaranteed immortality. But to what does Perry attribute our enduring love of Captain Mainwaring and co? “It’s because we reminded the British people of their finest hour. It had wobbly back projection and cardboard scenery, but also the truth… and great artists that brought it to life.”
Simon Blackwell ‘To create comedy that generations of people genuinely love is rare, and he managed it time and again’. Perry’s work on the show - along with that of the producer, David Croft - created one of the most popular British television programmes of all time’.
Jack Dee ‘Amazing contribution to British telly. Watched Dad's Army only yesterday. Still as funny as when I watched it as a kid.’
Vicki Michelle ‘a brilliant comedy writer & true gentleman. He leaves us such a legacy’
Ian Lavender ‘Jimmy, he has been a part of my life for such a long time. ‘He was half of one amazing partnership, it brings back so many wonderful memories… lots of good times together with much laughter…’
David Schneider ‘Thanks to Jimmy Perry for the sublime Dad’s Army, the perfect sitcom, and for making me laugh for over 40 years.’
Shane Allen, BBC controller of comedy commissioning, said: ‘Jimmy Perry is a Goliath of British comedy writing. His work will be enjoyed and appreciated for many years to come’.
Miranda Hart ‘Thank you Jimmy Perry. You made our world a funnier and brighter place.’
Nigel Farage tweeted: Jimmy Perry created and co-wrote the fantastic Dad's Army, my favourite comedy of all time.'
Tom Watson 'We grew up laughing at Jimmy Perry's hilarious characters. One of our greatest TV writers who will not be forgotten.'
Ruth Madoc ‘Being on set was quite hard work, but great fun. We weren’t allowed to laugh. One particular series we’d been naughty giggling on set. This didn’t go down very well with David and Jimmy, so they made us T-shirts saying, ‘Comedy is a serious business’. We were told in no uncertain terms’.
Frank Williams “Dad’s Army was one of the happiest periods of my life, it was a wonderful role to work on.”
TV comedy producer Jon Plowman said, “The quality of his work was consistently brilliant”, adding that Jimmy and his co-writer David Croft came as a package. He described them as “comedy revolutionaries”, saying, “They made it look easy; we know it is not.”
Chris Jarvis ‘this sitcoms are pure gold & will live on.’
Jeffrey Holland ‘There is no doubt that he and David created some of the most memorable and iconic characters and moments in television sitcom history and as such, has left us with a wonderful legacy we can look back on for many years to come. I am proud to have been a part of so many of his series’.
Mark Braxton ‘There is a light that never goes out - and its name is Jimmy Perry’
Perry admits to being bowled over by the continuing success of his Home Guard comedy: “Isn’t it amazing? Let me tell you, I’m overwhelmed.”
Appointed an OBE in 1978, Jimmy Perry published his autobiography, A Stupid Boy, in 2002 and received a British Comedy award for lifetime achievement in 2003.

Those of you criticising Mainwaring’s jealousy have overlooked the time in which Dad’s Army was set; his resentment is justified, doors are opened for Wilson just because of his family and schooling, and this was prevalent at the time. Mainwaring points out his attempts at promotion, which he probably merits, founder because of the banks snobbery against those not educated at a public school. He may be pompous but he’s a hard worker, diligent, brave and very capable in most instances. He worked for what he achieved. Wilson has that understated smugness that the upper classes possess, and still do in the U.K., knowing it will all fall into their lap eventually. The relationship between Mainwaring and Wilson was brilliantly written and the reversed status both professionally and in the Home Guard is a stroke of genius.

It’s true that this episode brings out a darker side to Mainwaring, he has a big chip on his shoulder and believes that he had had to struggle through life, the “old school tie” was a big thing in those days, in truth as he was grammar school educated it meant that he was reasonably intelligent and would have had a fairly decent education. There are clues in the series about him and his private life. We never see his wife but he is clearly henpecked and living in an abusive relationship with her, there was a scene where he appeared with a black eye and tried to dismiss it by saying he walked into a cupboard door or something like that, he seems to live in fear of her. His speech in this episode is telling, the audience is giggling in the background, but his declaration that parade nights are the highlight of his day has a lot of truth behind it, if nothing else it gets him away from his wife. So yes he does come across as pompous, petty and vindictive but in truth he is quite a tragic figure.

John Le Mesurier was excellent as Sgt Wilson. He portrayed the character so well.He always seemed to be half asleep and sailing through life. The way Mainwaring was jealous of Wilson's private education was always a source of fun.

Mainwaring's rank was one of the few things he always held over Wilson's head. Then, in the series' final episode, Wilson shows up to Jones' wedding in the WW1 dress uniform of a Captain, which Mainwaring finds out was Wilson's commissioned rank when he served in the Royal Artillery. He had been promoted to Captain by his superiors for personal excellence, & had achieved the rank twenty-five years before Mainwaring awarded it to himself when the platoon was founded. You could see & almost hear Mainwaring sizzle with envy & frustration as those facts sank in. Seeing Mainwaring's arrogant pomposity regularly deflated was one of the little joys of the show, but that & his insistence on enduring the same tasks & hardships as his men also gave him a bit of relatable sympathy, from both the platoon & the viewers.

Cap. Mainwaring really shows his acting genius here. An extraordinary voice and sense of timing (see how he handles the sounds from the phone). Also glowing with righteous anger throughout this episode at the unholy chaste system in England. This is one thing I love about the program; how the actors' personalities seemed to bleed naturally into their characters over time. Mainwaring was a pompous little man, but with energy and bulldog grit and an unquestionably patriotic heart. Wilson was a sleepy dreamer, slow, coasting on his looks and charm, low energy, low commitment, low responsibility. This contrast is brought to a head in this ep, which makes it all the more special. As opposites who in ways need each other's skills, but would never admit it, they're the perfect comic duo. Add to that all the other vivid characters and it's a true classic

This memorable episode really reflects what has been dormant in other episodes: Captain Mainwaring's envy towards Sergeant Wilson over his origins and privileges. Like the time Wilson was invited to the golf club for lunch and ate salmon, while Captain Mainwaring had to eat smuk in the lunchroom. Or in the episode 'the honorouble man' where the captain showed a lot of envy when Sergeant Wilson was given a title. But in this episode it came to an 'eruption'. In the conversation between the two from 5.00, all of Captain Mainwaring's frustrations were expressed. He showed many ugly and mean traits this episode. The person portrayed as Sergeant Wilson is a very modest, intelligent and polite, somewhat 'soft' man. While Mainwaring, who is of lower descent, behaves like someone from higher circles and clearly has to appeal to his status instead of his background and achievements. A nice piece of acting from both actors and one of the most memorable episodes of Dad's army. I'm from Holland and I like this serie very much. It's timeless.

24.00 Good old Mr. Granger from Are You Being Served. I love this series. I have watched every episode more than once. Even more than once! British comedies are usually well written and acted, but this show must be among the very best the industry has ever produced. The whole formula here is perfect from writing to acting, from the theme to camera work. Mainwaring and Wilson were brilliant. They only portrayed what goes on in real life where there is jealousy, anger, friendship, regret and more. What a fabulous show!

@@willyspinney1959 England was a country defined by class, only 'gentlemen' from the upper- and middle-classes were expected to become new officers in 1914. Britain's public schools and universities were the main recruiting grounds for the new leaders needed en masse to manage the hundreds of thousands of new soldiers in the ranks. Young officers were taught how to control and care for men and how to command their respect. The most junior infantry officers, second lieutenants, were often only teenagers. Each had to lead a platoon of around 30 men, many older and from much tougher backgrounds than themselves. I stand true on what I said that Officers still 'bought' their commissions not necessarily by pecuniary exchange but by class distinction and who they knew. But having said that I understand that you are correct according to the statutory regulations

I clicked this on a whim, having not seen Dad's Army since I was a kid. As I watched, it became apparent very quickly that Arthur Lowe was searching for his lines. At first I thought that perhaps the episode was produced on a shorter schedule than usual, but nobody else seemed to struggle. I looked at Lowe's wiki and found that not only was he a serious alcoholic, but he refused to learn his lines in advance of shooting because he hated the scripts. I've read a few bits and pieces since that first googling of Lowe. He was viewed as a pompous and unpleasant man. By contrast John Le Mesurier, another Dad's Army cast member who succumbed to the cumulative effects of drink, was beloved. There's comfort in that, because he always came across as eminently loveable.

I agree that Mainwaring is a better leader on the fact he does make the men behave, however the fact he refuses to admit to his mistakes, like getting the men lost, shows that his personal desires of how he is to be seen and how he sees himself prevents him in my opinion from being a really good leader. The fact he always refers to Pike as "you stupid boy", doesn't show respect or value to Pike for his contributions. It is never easy to get from others what you yourself will not give. Concerning Wilson who doesn't have the same issues of character, he is to soft spoken for the military. Men do not see being soft spoken as a strength. The episode where a simple thing like getting the men from the dart game at the pub Wilson was unable to do. If Mainwaring was not scheduled to be gone that day and have Wilson in charge the men never would have gone to the dart game in the first place.

@@bustercherry9643 I disagree with this notion. For one thing, it was the Head Office's responsibility to notify Manwairing, and they didn't follow up after sending one letter. Also, the man from the Head Office who gets Wilson acclimated with his new position tells him that they've sought to promote him previously but Manwairing had reported to them that he wasn't fit for it. Wilson doesn't seem overly surprised by this news, which quite possibly means he somehow knew this. Did Wilson use somewhat underhanded tactics in not telling Manwairing, maybe; but assuming Wilson did know of the unfavorable reports of his work it was likely that Manwairing may have attempted to do what was in his power to stop the promotion before its completion otherwise, likely for the reasons addressed in the beginning of the episode.
