You use a lot of WD-40 for cleaning. Have you tried mineral spirits (maybe called “white spirit” in your country)? It’s cheaper and just as effective, with less smell. You could have soaked that freehub body in it overnight to clean out the old grease before adding the new grease.

Mmm I haven’t tried , I have low odor version of wd40 so that helps but I will look into it thanks ! Cheaper is good for me 😂
Someone please for the love of god buy this guy a bench vice.

Isn't that the way it goes, your rear wheel. But when things don't go as planned you just make a new plan. Good job, nice bike.

Haha dude for real! All the going back and forth with setting the wheel cones 😵💫😵💫 glad it worked out at the end tho!
Awesome vid as always. A few things: - The hub you pulled off is a UG (Uniglide) hub and needs a threaded last (small) cog to fix the cassette onto the body. The spline pattern is differnt to a HG hub since all the splines are the same width unlike the HG where there is a larger groover/smaller spline. you can make it work with a HG if you file down the splines on the casette and use a cog from a UG cassette to thread it onto the hub - If you refurb a hub shell you would usually go with oil, not grease (i recently had to repair a UG hub where i flushed the gunked up hub with WD40 and put in new lubricant)
@garysprojects

Thank you mate! Ahhh yes Uniglide ! Thats it. Haha yes you are right the splines were all the same size and didn’t fit when I tried 😅 That’s cool knowing its possible to make it fit. Thanks for the info , very helpful cheers!

I am using a DX hub with a uniglide body but has a 7 speed Hyperglide installed. There could be a time that the transition to HG had used the same spline designs as the UG ones.

Front rack stay mounting bolt - head on the inside, nut on the outside of the dropout - more space.

That’s true, but if it loosens it will do more damage
The rack mount solution you came up with was brilliant

Looks good! Funny how little tweaks sometimes turn into big projects. I'm about to undo a dropbar conversion on my 90s bianchi grizzly for surly sunrise bars. I'll be adding a front rack too. Hoping it all goes smoothly!

Cheers mate ! Yeah that’s totally true. Always longer than you think specially when things pop up. The upgrades to your bike sounds good !
Yo you probs already know but save old Allen head screws from water bottle mounts or road caliper brake shoes and use them for the eyelet mounts on bike. Way better than the screw driver heads !
@garysprojects
Жыл бұрын
Yessss!! Definitely ! Great to save those for sure
Great vid, next time use a brake cable and thread it through some of the holes on the hub and wrap that around a block of wood. Doesn’t always save the hub but it is way easier.

Hahah yeah it was hard ay , almost gave up! 😂😂
Jesus… absolutely murdered that poor exage hub 😢 You only need to lace a few spokes on a rim to get enough leverage, or use some rubber on the pipe wrench pliers.

Nice work as always Gary, admire your patience with switching around at the back. Would have driven me insane haha I am suprised that you got the stand working at the stays. From my experience I could never get them to clamp down properly, they would always rotate under load eventually

Cheers mate ! Ya the rear was a bit of pain , not gunna lie 😂. Mmm yeah I think the old inner tubes might help with the twisting of the stand maybe ? So far it’s working well , but will see how it goes 🫡

So how many bikes have you taken apart??? It is nice one can refit a bike but there is too many parts that need to go back together...and specialized tools needed...i would have drill a new hole on front fork for rack, current hole too close to wheel axil...
