This is exactly the car I'd be looking for, unfortunately its not coming here to Canada. We need less Tesla, less self-driving cars, and more Dacia Spring. I never thought I'd see a review where a manual parking brake would be considered a "negative" on a vehicle. We've gotten a bit too lofty with our automobile culture in this world. P.S. this isn't a negative on this review, great job and thanks for the exposure to this car!

I have a place in Vancouvers Westend & I count every 5th car is an ev or more to the point a Tesla. That's 65k per vehicle, Dacia would make a killing here for, price, for foot print etc.

Great effort by Dacia and it probably makes the perfect city car or second car if lucky enough to be able to afford one. It would certainly fulfil 95% of my motoring needs. New considerations now coming into play. New budget electric like this or second hand VW ID. Look forward to the full review when you one at home.

@@NobbyOnCarsTrue……but when a neighbour (EV6) and a colleague in work (ID4) both trade in their EVs for ICE cars, it makes me wonder if the hype around the benefits of a owning an EV is not giving us a balanced picture. I remember your trip to Cork and back in a “long range” Mustang Mach-E where you had to stop and recharge 3 times with issues finding a working charger too? Didn’t that add hours to the trip? This Spring is priced right but how safe is it? Looks very tinny too me.

It's based on the Renault Kwid with a 1.0 litre engine. In India the Renault Kwid 1.0 manual costs 1.47 lakh rupees or about 1,650 euros. Suddenly, a 45bhp Dacia Spring electric looks expensive at 20k.

Euro NCAP rating... Highly relevant in the transition period when you'll still be driving on roads, particularly city roads, populated with much heavier and heavily engineered cars with higher NCAP. Will Dacia be doing a "Tuf" ened version with carbon fibre stiffened crumple zones back and front ? Or, after-market protection kit ?

Johnny Smith said it earns 1 star - but considering how much the tests have evolved and how new cars have gotten heavier and more expensive/deluxe to keep earning that 5 star rating - it's no surprise how 4-star cars sold in 2013 like the Fiat Panda would achieve 1 star today.

@@NobbyOnCars Also a good point. But the Springs has been specifically designed as cheap urban run-around. Sadly the Boxster and 408 don't fit that design criteria, whereas the KIA models do, apart from the original cost implications. I really like the Spring its design ethos is spot on, but it's a single purpose use and myself and many others no doubt would prefer a second vehicle with a bit more versatility for our money. I've been awaiting the Dacia and Citroen models for a long time now, both will suit my motoring needs for 99% of the time. It is however the final 1% that niggles at me. In the past your second car would of been a small cheap ICE thing which could if need be do a long journey at the drop of a hat. I once drove from Leeds to Aberdeen in a Smart for-two, and it coped much better than I thought and so did I. Could the Spring do the same journey? Yes, of course it could but, it wouldn't be so painless as with the Smart. Which still leaves me wondering where to spend my money? Decisions!, decisions!

Glad that it's coming , lots to praise about it. Finally a new EV that's not an expensive SUV! but regrettably is designed to look like one and I resent that how Dacia decided to make it look more SUVish and completely neglecting aerodynamics. For reasons of customer appeal? The eagle eyed can tell that the old Spring's wheel arches left less open gaps above the wheels. The rear wheel arch and rear bumper really do look like parachutes. If only it had the plastic for a slight wheel skirt and underbody panels... They did delete the sleek roof bars and added a baby spoiler, but that's not enough, and not worth limiting the practicality. If Dacia paid attention to aero, high speed efficiency would be improved. 140 mi "official" range spells 110 mi irl (110/26.8 = 4.1mi/kWh) depending on how thirsty the heater is, probably 80 miles (3mi/kWh) if pegged at 120kmh on a 100% charge with Irish conditions. Makes me wish that Dacia gave more of an effort in aero and attention to detail considering what they managed to pull off! Not efficient by design I'm afraid, but efficient from being austere and modestly lightweight, 200kg lighter than an eUP! I feel torn because this is as good as it gets for a new EV.😕

I think I speak for plenty of people with an active interest of switching from ICE to EV. A good amount of us shopping for a cheap EV currently own an old 2nd or 3rd hand ICE car. I doubt more than a 25% of people actually checked the Euroncap stats at the time of buying their ICE. When money is short & need is high, those stars become less important, especially since the biggest downgrade to older vehicles rating is purely by lacking some software gimmick. Coming from a 20yrs old car, I don't want or need a TV inside my car. It's illegal to use my phone while driving so those overly complicated "infotainment" systems should not have been allowed in the first place. Electrical handbrake is a big no-no for me. Once the button dies, you're out. A classical one, sure, you can mess it up a few times, pull harder and the car still stays put. I might get 700km range with my ICE, but that is only on the motorway and cruising comfy. The real range is more around 350km to 400km because of mixed weekly commutes usually with AC/heating on. This is what high range and really expensive EVs promise on paper. Throw some cold winters in the mix and you barely get 75% of even that. Sure I don't need a 700km range on a daily basis. Almost no one does. However, we all have distand relatives, friends or possible job offers we need to get to at some point or another. What's the point of having an EV if I can't reliably charge on that route or it will take me twice as long because of waiting times in mild, normal conditions? 20k € brand new for an assured 100km range (empty promises do not count) is outrageously expensive.

Dealerships are given zero accountability or incentive to keep aging cars on the road even with its warranty, go figure. The worst stories are coming from Hyundai EVs from Canada and the US, compacted ice hitting the underbody and the dealerships give a 5 figure bill saying that the warranty was voided by reckless driving. Doesn't seem like an inherent EV problem, but an incompetence problem on a corporate scale.
