D.R. Horton homeowner says new problems forced her family to move out again

In September, the I-Team exposed how a single mother and her family were forced to live in an apartment for months while repairs were made to their D.R. Horton new construction home. The company blamed poor work by subcontractors for the problems at the time. But months later, the family’s belongings were back in storage as crews worked to fix some of the same problems again.

@@chancecurry4176 that may be true some of the time but most builders want to build where there's a demand which is generally in an incorporated area with building codes. I'm sure what you say is true tho in areas of Georgia and the Carolinas for example. I just made my comment bc I've seen junk construction get passed bc the town inspector is lazy or greedy.

After a category 3 tornado hit here in Tennessee, many homes were found to be not up to code. Once it's built the inner structure is not visible. The problem is the builder took shortcuts and the inspector should have caught it before sheetrock went up. Sad how many builders care more about the bottom line than quality, much less the safety of families that buy their subpar houses. Sue, sue, sue. This is wrong .

My Fiancé and I actually backed out of a new home with DR Horton cause of their build quality. The bricking was awful, but they tried to say it's suppose to look that way. The hallway walls and closet wall was badly crooked. Trim work was awful, holes in the walls that were not cleaned up. The exterior was covered with both stone and brick. The bricking was laid crooked in many areas and the stone in the front of the house was badly chipped off that you need to restone the front. The cement the A/C unit sits on was badly cracked and coming apart. The facia board on the front of the house needed a replacement. This is how it looked close to closing. I felt if we had purchased, trying to have these issues fixed would be a hassle cause once you sign the dotted line, you can forget it.

My basement drain in the furnace room was the floor high point. I could go on with all the problems that we ands neighbors had from no flashing to crack foundations. These builders only exist to make as much money as they can period. Quality is poor and response is slow. Most of the subs are incompetent. If you plan on building a track home, spend the money on your own inspector that visits the build process regularly. If the builder refuses your right for your own inspector, walk. You'll save money using your own building contractor if you want to upgrade anything, as the nationals price gouge for not accepting their low quality standard crap.

My husband also noticed that some of the wall studs were either broken or almost broken clean through. Then he kept going out there waiting for them to secure the wall studs to the foundation bolts and the did not! They were just going to cover them with the drywall! The home was in horrible shape at closing and a clear indicator of future problems in my opinion. Did the family have a realtor agent or did they deal with the builder directly?? The ball was dropped and it seems like a lawsuit is in order in this case. I would think twice/thrice before purchasing a home from DR Horton. This is a lesson for anyone is in the market for a new build, do your research on the type of builder you decide to purchase from. New home construction at times are not problem free, but this type of workmanship is far below professional standards, and no one should put up with it.

Sometimes a tornado can hit the house next door and miss yours. Just because you came through with barely no damage, means nothing. Glad your house is fine, but to ignore all the issues I'm reading about and hearing about, it seems to be a problem. Again, happy for you.@@jesicagenes6671

Thwy are the largest builders in the country which means they will always seem like the company who has the most issues with construction!!! Human error exists yall!! No builder is going to hwve perfectly built homes everytime its jst not possible .....but what the ckncern is that they fixed all the problems an dpaid for them to be living somewhere else...this is why you hire inspectors ro inspect at all phases to help account for any mistakes...many people will say they have a dr horton home and it fine....plus how do they have so much buisness of theor homes are so awful??

I agree that rising interest rates are making it harder for people to afford homes in addition to rising prices. A strong FA can help you assemble your portfolio.
