The bamboo membrane makes a big difference to the tone, and sets it apart from all the other flutes of the world. "What is the membrane on the dizi for? The Chinese membrane flute (dizi) has a membrane covering a hole in the wall of the instrument between the mouth hole and the uppermost finger‐hole. The membrane is driven by the acoustic pressure in the pipe, producing rich harmonics through its nonlinearity."

This version played on the dizi is the best I’ve heard. So simple and beautiful. Dong Min’s gentle touch and the instrument tell a beautiful story together.
