"Tokyo Story" was selected as the all-time best film in the history of the world because it captures the question of what time (that is, life, human beings, and the world) is through film, which is the art of time. 2nd place "Citizen Kane" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" make full use of the privilege of movies to cross the past, present and future, but in the end they end up being a mystery. Yasujirō Ozu preserves the chronological order of reality, and depicts that all time is lost, and whether it is happy or unhappy, it is purified by time. So great. As evidence of this, the scene changes to show the straight corridor of the elementary school, which has been cleansed and purified, shortly after being immersed in the final farewell conversation between Chishu Kasa and Setsuko Hara. Ozu's famous death shot (cut without humans) inserted between scenes (in other words, time). Then the song "Evening Bell" heard from the classroom is also a hymn composed by Foster. will pierce your chest. It is filled with the thoughts of Ozu as a temporary elementary school teacher who worked for only one year before entering the movie industry. By the way, the beautiful theme song by Kojun Saito was played during the flag lowering ceremony at the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics. When I asked an expert, I was told that it was a very rare piece of music that fused the melodies of gagaku and hymns. I saw it for the first time 50 years ago, and it still rocks my soul.

After that, she moved to Shige's (Haruko Sugimura) house, which also runs a beauty salon in the downtown area, but both Shige and her husband (Nobuo Nakamura) are busy, and their parents are idle on the second floor without being able to go anywhere. Shige asks Noriko (Setsuko Hara), the wife of his second son who died in the war, to take care of her parents for a day. Noriko takes time off from her job to take them to Tokyo's tourist attractions, and spends the night in her tiny apartment doing all she can to entertain them.

Koichi and Shige pool their money to send their parents to Atami. However, the ryokan that Shige chose is a low-priced hotel, and the other guests are making noise until late at night, so the two of them can't sleep. The next day, the two decide to return to Onomichi, rounding up their plans and returning to Shige's house. However, Shige takes an annoyed attitude, saying that he would have liked him to come to Atami more slowly because he had a gathering of his colleagues tonight. While thinking about where to stay tonight, saying, "I'm finally running out of accommodation," Tomi decides to go to Noriko's cramped apartment. Noriko and Tomi talk intimately, and Tomi sheds tears at Noriko's kindness. On the other hand, Shukichi visits Hattori (Hisao Toake), who was close to him in Onomichi, but Hattori says he can't stay at his house, so let's drink outside, and he also calls out to Numata (Eijiro Higashino), who was also close in Onomichi. The three of us drink sake together. In the end, Shukichi gets very drunk, and when he and Numata return to Shige's house after midnight, they both fall asleep in the chairs in the beauty salon. Shige complains about her father to her husband.

The next day, everyone saw them off and they boarded the train home, but Tomi fell ill and got off the train in Osaka to stay at the house of her third son, Keizo (Shiro Osaka). Tomi and Shukichi, who have recovered, lament that their children weren't kind, but talk about how their lives were good. Shortly after the two returned to Onomichi, a telegram was received saying that her mother was in critical condition. After her Tomi's funeral, the three went home quickly, leaving her Noriko, and Kyoko was indignant, but Noriko protected her brother-in-law and quietly admonished her young Kyoko. On the day Noriko returns to Tokyo, Shukichi expresses her gratitude for Noriko's kindness, tells her to remarry quickly and be happy, and gives her a watch as a memento of her wife. Noriko raises her voice and cries. The next morning, alone in an empty room, Shukichi gazes out at the quiet sea of Onomichi.
