Thank you, David for watching and commenting. Me, too. I saw it a few times with my mom. This movie was made the same year I was born, so I could remember the times I saw reruns of the movie. My mom is not around anymore. I miss her. For as long as I could remember, I had wanted to translate the song so that more movie and music fans could enjoy it. ❤

Thank you for your thoughts, 任姐 was a great "actor." Indeed, as a lady, she sang in a very amazingly tender way that men could not. She could express emotions in a tender speaking voice that men could not. By far she was the most popular leading man in a way that men and women could not be. She was the best "male" opera singer there was, topping other "real" leading men.

Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. This movie was made the year I was born. As a child I accompanied my mom to watch it well into my early adulthood. (When I was just a toddler, our whole family must have gone for it together as it was a custom to go as a family but I was too young to remember. As my elder siblings grew up, they gradually stopped coming along.) Those days, movies that were popular would return to the screens after one or two years, like "The Sound Of Music," "Gone With the Wind" and so on. My mom has passed on but this movie is still popular and I'm glad people all over the world enjoy this excerpt.

agree with you for the Cantonese bit. cantonese is the best chinese dialect.

I'm not an expert of chinese opera, but I really love Yam Kim Fai as male lead because of her unique voice that cant be replicated by anyone else.

Yes, you are right. She does have a beautiful voice. When my mom told me she was a lady and only plays the part of men in Opera, I found it hard to believe. Lately I've seen her playing female roles in old black and white Cantonese movies. I'm not an expert in Cantonese Opera either. We don't have to be to enjoy some of them. Thank you for commenting and I'm glad you enjoy it.

I remember finding the full opera on youtube. it was one of the last old chinese operas that i found for my grandpa and grandma to watch before he passed away.

I'm glad you found that. I have found and downloaded the stage performance by these two actresses' disciples. I'm sure you are aware that the male lead and heroine are both played by ladies. So are the two leading couple in the stage performance. BTW, the stage performance like the original vinyl recordings are about four hours long.Thank you for sharing your experience.

Yes, Yam Kim Fai (Ren Jianhui) is awesome. She had made many successful Cantonese Opera movies with other opera-singer-actresses as well, notably Fong Yim Fun (Fang Yanfen)

this is the best rendition of this evergreen soulful song. these 2 were at their Best.

I remember reading about this in The Search for Modern China, and I recall Mr. Spence writing that the officials witnessing this play, the senior officials that were alive during the Ming resistance would cover their faces with their sleeves to hide themselves showing emotion. I can see why.

They are icons of Hong Kong culture and tradition. In a video of a performance of theirs for charity, they were not wearing their costumes but just normal formal wear. Yam was holding the script and wearing reading glasses. Bak was standing next to her, not even looking at the script or the audience. At that moment, her voice, her expressions, her body language was astonishing. It was as if she had transformed herself into Princess Cheung Ping. You do not see or hear her but the princess, instead. Thank you for your input. Sorry for the late response. I have been away from KZread for some time.

Thank you, Lai Yen. I'm glad you sang the song from my childhood days.... I'm 55 now. This movie is also 55. So I guess it's been popular and evergreen. It still sounds good like in those days when I knew the song without knowing what it meant. GBU Jeremy

Now it needs to be translated in Tagalog and Spanish.slowly and gradually all the languages of the world be translated to clearly understand this musical.unless you know the cantonese language good for you.i understand English and Cantonese.i have many latin and filipino friends.some know neither English or Cantonese🥺🥺🥺

Your video of this finale is the best one I've seen to date....it is exceptionally clear and I can follow the characters movements and dialog closely. Moreover, your English subtitles are great, especially for this 3rd generation Chinese who is still trying to remember what I learned 50 years ago at Mun Lun School. Do Jay for sharing.

Thanks for your thoughts. Sorry for the late reply. I've been away from KZread for a long time. This movie was made when I was born. Those days, popular movies return to the screen every one or two years. I watched a few times with my mom as I grew up. The recording could be heard everywhere we went from shops to homes and it was on the radio often.
