D.I.Y Milwaukee Battery won't charge How to Jump Start
In this video I show how I was able to get a Milwaukee battery that had be sitting a long time and as a result would not charge, to accept a full charge again. This was done on 3 Milwaukee 2.4 Ah 18 volt batteries and all 3 are able to complete the full charge cycle. Using a standard 9 volt household battery to transfer power to the 18 volt battery I made a connection and the 9 volt battery gave a small amount of power to the battery pack so that the charger was able to function properly.
I don't know if this will work with other brands like DeWalt Ryobi Makita Black and Decker Craftsman Ridgid Bosch Hitachi Porter-Cable skil but it might be worth a try.

This is unbelievable!!!! I have battery's and tools on my bench that I was about to throw away. They have been on the bench for at least five years . I tried this today and ALL FOUR BATTERY'S CHARGED!!! THANK YOU !!!!!!!
It worked! Some people were advising to connect it to a second charger or a car charger that I don't have, but I bought the 9v battery and it worked. Miracle!
Accidentally left my 14.4V in the garage this winter. Tried this for a couple of minutes, and it works! Red light is on, battery is charging as normal now. The cold weather must have taken it to extremely DEAD until this idea jump-started it so it would charge again. THANK YOU!

Just bought a older Milwaukee cordless set off Ebay for 20$ said the 3 OG batteries wouldn't charge ( no light) bought a new Energizer 9volt put it on all 3 friggin worked like a charm. Thanks a lot. The drill 3 batteries and charger plus case are like New. What a deal! Bought it after watching your video for a joke, but it friggin works. Gave it to my son because he's broke. Now he's using it all the time. Once again Thank you sir for sharing such useful information.
Thanks! This still works in May of 2022. I had an older drill and battery that had never been used very much. I had recycled one of the two batteries that came with the drill a few years ago when it would not take a charge. I did a slight variation on getting a little charge into the Milwaukee battery. I dug up an old 9v wall adapter that had powered a long gone Wi-Fi access point or something like that. I put a small brass screw into the center of the AC adapters plug to capture its positive(+) output and then used some alligator clip jumper wires that I had hanging around to connect the positive(+) voltage to the left connector on the battery and another jumper wire from the barrel of the connector to the right side for the negative(-) connection. I let it sit like that for perhaps 15 minutes and then pulled the wires off and put the battery into the charger base and BINGO the red light now lights up indicating that it is charging!

Wow you definitely upgraded this method! I'm glad you got your batteries working again. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the tip! I found a old Milwaukee combo set in my garage I'd completely forget about. Both batteries wouldn't change after fifteenth minutes with a 9 volt battery they both took a charge.
This worked perfectly on my 15 year old Milwaukee 14.4 nicad. 9 volt battey charge for 3 minutes, and now a red charge light. Many many thanks. You rock. 🤘
I was on the verge of buying a new charger and battery. Since mine is a very old model, and it wasn’t working/charging, I thought I needed to get some new ones. You have saved me from that. Thank you soooo much for sharing such a helpful video!!
Believe it or not, I was just looking for how to line up this very issue, then went to KZread to find an answer. Thank you very much, Dave.
Ok, I tried it. IT WORKED! I can't hardly believe it. So I have many dead batteries (OLD) and am now going through them to charge. Glad I didn't throw them out. Very grateful!

This is one of my favorite hacks ever. Just used it successfully on one of my Milwaukee 14.4v batteries which hasn’t worked for years. I couldn’t get it to work by just sliding the battery up to the terminals, it wouldn’t reach…so I just used a couple of wires to connect positive to positive and negative to negative.

I tried this on a 12 year old Milwaukee 18 volt battery that i found that was dead dead. Volt meter read 0.0. Hooked it up to a 9 volt battery for about an hour and BINGO the charger recognized the battery and it charged it, Great Tip Thanks
9-2-2022: Tried this and it worked! Couple of comments: 1. My battery had probably been dead for several years, so 3 minutes wasn't enough. I tried again, and went off and did something else. It was maybe an hour of jump charging, and that was enough. 2. My 9v didn't fit into the little box around the terminals as easily, so I had to mash the negative terminal on the 9v with pliers into a football shape, which means I now have a dedicated jump-start battery. Small price to pay.
Have the same batteries could not believe how much money i wasted this just saved me from buying two more batteries worked great wish i new this about 5 yrs ago
Just tried it on a well used battery shelved since 2006. It works. Charged. Working again. Thanks man. 1 note. Use a new 9v
Thanks for the tip. I didn't have a 9 volt battery so I just jumped from a full battery to the dead battery. I left it hooked it up for a 1 1/2 min. and it worked. Thanks again.
I don’t even know where to begin to say thank you. It ABSOLUTELY worked. I was so bummed that I had to pay for a new battery but now it’s charging. There was no light when I plugged it in. Thank you for taking the time to make this short video.
legend mate fixed 2 brand new batteries using this method however i used 2 x iphone eject pins and connected 9v battery got them charging instantly can’t thank u enough fella ;)
Wow, I wish I had seen this video before I purchased two new batteries several years back. Timing is everything, huh? Excellent tip; thanks.
Ok. I'm not sure what 30 secs of 9V does, but it absolutely did work for an 18V Milwaulkee NiMH slide battery. I would be interested to know why this works. Thanks for sharing, if nothing else I now know the charger still works!
I DID FLOW YOUR ADVICE MY TWO 14.4 BATTERIES BACK TO LIFE AGAIN THANK YOU FOR SAVED ME MONEY. 😁
Omg! You just saved my two batteries, man! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Well I’ll be! It worked! Mine is an M18 RedLithium XC 5.0. Had to make a small wire set (red & black) 20 AWG to slide into the battery terminals and wrapped the other end to their respective 9V terminals. Waited one minute and BAM! Now charging. You just saved me at least sixty bucks.

It worked for me too. I had loaned my drill to a family member and I suspect they ran the batteries down so low the charger didn't know they were there. Used this trick to wake up 2 batteries and they are going again.
Damn good tip! Just saved 3 18 volt power plus batteries with your advice. Thank you.
Excelent tip i used a 5.7 phone power supply and it worked great. 30 seconds and it actually started charging.

Wow that's pretty cool! Nice ingenuity. Thank you for watching and thank you for your comment!
This technique worked for me (thanks) but not right away. even after the connecting the 9-volts to my dead batteries, there was no response at all when I placed the 18-volt batteries to the Milwaukee charger. I suspected he charger since both batteries went bad simultaneously years ago. I bought an after-marked charger. Eepeated the process, and it worked like a charm. Of course NOW the original charger is working again. Still, I invested about $45 and instead of $250.
Bro! This totally worked. Saved me about $150. Thanks!!
I have newer battery and charger M18 red lithium XC 3.0 AX . Had to use 2 short pieces of low voltage wires to connect from 9 v battery to m18 terminals for 3 minutes and it did the trick..Thank you! Saved me some $$$
I tried this with, what I believe is, the “newer” style M18 Lithium 2.0. This battery was new and never used for 3+ years. The charger unity flashed green/ red. I inserted single edge razor blades into the positive terminal and another into the negative. I then used jumper wires to a 9 volt battery. After 2 minutes the 9v started to sizzle. I then immediately disconnected the jumpers, removed the razor blades and plug the M18 into the charger. It worked enough to get 2 bars of battery life. I then held in the battery status button for 5 seconds, released the button waiting about 45 seconds for the battery to cycle through. The battery is now charging. Thank you for the tip. User must assume all risks. If you’re not comfortable trying this, DON’T attempt this fix!

I was about to recycle 4 of my 5 old 14.4s. Thought I'd check google to see how cheap I could rebuild when I came across this vid. Used my last good battery and a couple jumpers and like magic, I now have 5 batteries charging. I did an led conversion on a couple old milwaukee flashlights. Going to check run time but pretty stoked that I have additional work/emergency lighting. Thanks for the video!
I have 2, my gut feeling was there got to be a way. I'll try this out tomorrow at work. These batteries are in very shot supply right now, so any way to get these ones going will be a money saver for sure.
Thanks a lot , your idea and solotion is the best.👍
This worked for me but I had to use two light jumper cables with alligator clips on each end. I attached one wire to the positive on the 9V battery and the other wire to the negative side. I engaged both connectors for the battery negative terminal. Waited three minutes and the battery charger had red charge light on. Thanks much.

Thanks for posting this! It may have helped saved my old 18V NiCad packs as I'm finally able to get the charger to charge them. For my packs, a 9V battery wasn't enough to give them enough of a charge to bootstrap the charging process -- I had to use a car battery charger on them for ~10 minutes.

Thanks good vídeo, i was looking for they positive and negative, they vídeo helped me. I used the 12 volts car battery and ir worked
I would not use a 9v for this which as someone else stated could explode. I always used a small 12 volt charger on the lowest setting and only for about 5 seconds in reverse polarity direction. It vaporizes internal deposits that form on plates of ni-cad cells and choke it out. I never tried with lithium as I don't know if your should. The last I knew, the Post Office doesn't even want lithium laptop batteries shipped thru the mail because of their inherent dangers. Not sure if thoae same dangers apply to cordless tool ones. I've also found that this is not a long term fix. You can charge them and use them immediately or fairly soon, but the charge doesn't hold for days like they should. Nothing is as good as buying a new.
Worked on my 18V Milwaukee battery, thanks for a great idea

ive returned 3 drill sets so far and out of the 6 batteries that were in them only one would charge im not gonna jump start them im just going to buy a different brand
My question is about the charger you are using . I have a similar 1 hr charger ( Ni-Cad only ) with top up & conditioning mode , but the only light that works is the red charging light . After an hour or so the light goes out , the battery is between 19-20V ; but it looses power very quickly when being used ? The 2nd & 3rd indicators never light up ?? Are they supposed to ? The 4th is the battery hot/ cold indicator . Any insight into what the problem is would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks.
It worked for me thanks

@@DoItWithDave Forgot to mention one thing. Set the other battery on top of 9v applying a litte down pressure. You may need to let it sit a few hours or completely drain batteries and start over. I have this same drill that was never used. A friend of mine gave it to me before he died. Batteries were never charged. Be patient it should work to get them to charge. I ended up using 2 batteries on both drill batteries.

Hi, I have a Milwaukee Drill V28PD and a V1828C charger. Will I be able to charge and use an 5AH M28 red lithium ion battery, or it is not compatible with that drill and charger?
i got M12 batterys that are currently doing this gonna try it
Does this work on all types of batteries? Example, lithium, nicad, ale, etc
Fixing to try this.
Worked to get the red light to come on but the battery will not take a charge. Stops trying to charge after about 5 minutes. Assuming my battery is just bad.
@christurnblom4825
5 жыл бұрын
Could be but there's other ways to check. I'm assuming you have lithium-ion batteries here. If you crack it open there's going to be several cells wired in parallel, meaning positive to positive, negative to negative. unless it's a really small pack with only one battery per cell. The cells are wired together in series, meaning positive to negative. They usually use "18650" batteries, they look like a large "AA" The vast, vast majority of 18650's are 3.7 volts nominal but at full charge they are 4.2 volts. Get a voltmeter and check each cell. If any cell is lower than 3 volts (or possibly 3.1-3.2 depending on circuitry) The board will often refuse to charge. This a safety measure to cover the manufacturers ass. It's highly unlikely that dipping below 3 volts one or twice is going to make the battery unstable but, again ..."CYA". This is often the reason the stop taking a charge. I don't know why the 9 volt works but there's so much circuitry in those things it might be able to take the 9 volts and start distributing it to each cell and that will make it able to take a charge but I'd bet that if you took the 9 volt off and didn't try charging it for an hour, it woulnd't take the charge because the voltage will have dropped. The first thing I would think of with the battery you mentioned is that it's as you say, "just bad" as in, it's gone through too may cycles or stayed under 3 volts for too long and won't hold charge or more than a few MAh. If you have the time and spot welder, you can check each individual 18650. You can buy the grade "A" ones online for around $2 a piece. the Grade B&C are cheaper but unless you know what you're doing don't replace them with anything that is not Grade "A" and/or has a rating of 5C or higher, just to be safe. Actually, without the knowledge of what a C rating is and how to use it, you'll be lucky to find what I recommended for less than $4 a piece ...from a reputable dealer. some of these guys flat out lie. They buy grade "C" and relable them to grade "A" . I could explain it all but you have the internet and this post is too dam long already. ...also don't mix & match in cells, that's potentially dangerous. They need to be the same MAh.
Thanks it worked
Can this be done to the new 1.5 AH BATT. Pack?
very good thank you for vidos
Did you use the center pin as negative or the outer right pin.
