Founded in 1878 as the “Forest School of Dehradun,” it later became the “Imperial Forest School” in 1884 under the guidance of Dietrich Brandis.
In 1906, it was reestablished as the Imperial Forest Research Institute by the British Imperial Forestry Service.
Today, FRI stands as one of the oldest institutions of its kind in India.

During my recent visit, I had the opportunity to explore FRI’s museums, the institute plays a crucial role in training Indian Forest Service cadres and State Forest Service cadres.

FRI’s contribution extends beyond India; it has influenced forest management across the entire Indian subcontinent.
In 1991, it was declared a deemed university by the University Grants Commission4.
