Two of the Redtails pilots that got capture Lt. Alexander Jefferson and Lt. Richard D. Macon (that end up in the barracks with Buck) were famous. Jefferson after the war wrote a book, Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free: Memoirs of a Tuskegee Airman and POW, is a personal memoir of those who served America in World War II and after. Macon and Jefferson helped found Tuskegee Airmen Inc. and each served as president of the Detroit chapter. And if you want to know more about the Red Tails (Tuskegee Airmen) there are 2 movies at least that tell the story about it, one is "Tuskegee Airmen" with Laurence Fishburne and Cuba Gooding Jr, and the other is "Red Tails" also with Cuba Gooding Jr. Keep up the good work.

I've been reading about WWII for 25 years now. To me, the most interesting and laudable stories to come out of the American War effort were the Tuskegee Airman/Red Tails and the 442nd RCT "Go For Broke" comprised entirely of 2nd and 3rd generation Japanese-Americans - many of whom volunteered directly from the internment camps where they and their families had been unceremoniously and unconstitutionally detained by their own government without trial or any other due process outside of 'war emergency' executive powers. Both units faced significant bureaucratic and institutional hurdles to even exist, and then both went on to outperform nearly every comparable unit to be found in the entire American War effort.

After March 1944 although still dangerous, due to numbers and lack of enemy planes the probability of surviving 25 missions was highly likely hence raising the amount of missions. To the point that on D-Day there was little to no opposition in the air. Over Germany there was still effective opposition and the ever present flak. Tactics changed from bombing Germany to bombing V1 and 2 launch sites and ground support from April '44 until October too.

There were exactly TWO German fighters available to defend against the Allied invasion. The others had all either been destroyed, or withdrawn to cover Calais (where the Germans thought the Allies were landing) and Germany.

Fun thing about the bombers hitting the beach defences on D-Day: almost all of them missed. In Band of Brothers, you can see that the German trenches and bunkers had lost all of their camouflage netting, which was true. That was about all the damage done. Someone got the timing wrong, and most aiming-point markers, and therefore bombs, fell beyond the defences. Sometimes by miles. Suddenly changing city-destroying planes to attacking pin-point targets on a beach didn't work very well, basically. Happened again later, when the US break-out from the beaches was preceded by a mass air attack. In some places, it worked, in others, the people hit were Americans, including a General, which almost made the soldiers happy about it.

If you want to watch the most historically accurate war movie then _MIDWAY_ is the one to watch. So accurate that they had to compress even the most significant events down in order to squeeze it into the movie. Great actors from both the American crew and the Japanese crew.

Thanks as always for the reviews of this series. Just to be "safe" I did read through the comments "to date ( i.e., as of when I posted this comment). There are a couple recurring comments/threads that I "somewhat" agree with. I do think this is probably the weakest episode in the series. Has some GREAT moments...but just tries to do too much. I loved the character of "Sandra", and the actress playing her did a great job...but they probably should have let that thread wither on the vine after episode 6. I do understand why they brought in the Tuskegee Airmen, but would have liked a little bit more (I was blessed to meet a famous TA, Col, later Brig Gen. Charles McGee...GREAT man). There were many comments about there just not being a lot the 100th Bomb Group DID on D-day...and this is true. The 8th Air Force had many many mission on June 6th, including many ground attack missions, but this show is focused on the "Bloody 100th" and they only flew a few missions on D-Day and there really wasn't much to see (even what they show is a bit over dramatized). Another challenge this show has that BoB did not is that it's covering a longer calendar period, in fewer episodes (as I understand there were 10 planned...but...COVID). Enjoy Episode 9...it again cobbles together some details for dramatic effect, and to tell a "better" story in the producers option, but it still mostly hits the mark for what it tries to convey. Have a Blessed week.

The number of missions for a tour went from 25 to 30 because the chances of completing the tour was getting much better. The number would go up to 35 before the end of the war. The 99th Fighter Squadron (the Tuskegee Airmen) do not belong in this story. They flew from North Africa before moving to Sicily and then Italy. They did escort bombers of the Fifteenth Air Force from Italy, but never the Eight Air Force, who were based in England. Some members of the 99th FS did end up in Luft Stalag III, but most likely did not interact with Buck and Bucky at all - it was a very large camp. In the attack on the south of France, the 99th FS flew P-51Bs, not the P-51Ds shown, they did not have rockets, attacking only with machine guns. Also, teh way they used teh rockets and teh way the rockets behaved was incorrect. It is an annoyance that the only fighter squadron featured in this series had nothing to do with the Eight Air Force and the 100th BG. There were many fighter squadrons in teh Eight Air Force Fighter Command and RAF Fighter Command that supported the bombing missions. Jimmy Doolittle took command of the Eight Air Force in January 1944. One of the first things he did was to change the role of escort fighters - instead of defending the bombers, they were to attack Luftwaffe fighters, be it on the air or ground. This effectively made the bombers the bait. The reason for there not being enemy fighters on D-Day was that many had been destroyed by the escort fighters, that the Germans concentrated on protecting Germany, and that the bombing missions leading up to D-Day had reduced the Luftwaffe's stocks of fuel. We didn't get to see any of the ground support missions that the EIght AF flew in support of the invasion, some of which were flown at low level, rather than the normal hight altitude missions shown through the series.

To be fair, there honestly wasn't much about D-Day TO cover from the perspective of the airmen. The Luftwaffe had been virtually annihilated in France, with the Germans having EXACTLY two planes available in the entire Normandy area. The survivors had all been withdrawn to the defense of the Reich, with some forces left to cover Calais (where the Germans expected the landings to take place). These were flown by Josef Priller and his wingman Heinz Wodarczyk, made a strafing run against Sword and Juno Beaches, then ran for home.

The offer of ID paoers to the Tuskeegee Flyers was not a joke. Southern France (Formerly Vichy France) had a significant Minority population of Algerian , Berbers and Africans, all from Frances' colonies in Africa. While the Vichy government had co-operated with the Nazis over deirting Jews, they had balked at deporting legal French Citizens even if not white. Many served in "Reserved" or specialised occupations, many very difficult to replace or fill.

I'm with you on the D-Day thing. I also thought we were gonna see more of it and it's my only disappointment when it comes to this show. My theory is that since D-Day was such a big part of Band Of Brothers, they didn't want to have alot of focus on it in this one. But still, I wish they gave it a bit more time because they treated it as such a non event lol. Especially with such a dramatic biild up up to it that they had with Crosby. It felt very anti climactic.

Hey Kamilla so this is out of context for you. Put the Tuskegee airmen you're a very important part of world war II they were the only black fighter pilot squadron in the hall ETO. One of their successes was while running fighter cover for bombing groups they never lost a plane. You need to watch the movie the Tuskegee airmen. There is an original and a remake. You need to watch the original. The remake is a CGI shitshow. The original is fantastic. Dad's always you're awesome. Love you ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦

Has anyone ever told you you look a bit like Millie Bobby Brown? Part of the big problem with the series is just how compressed the timeline is. Events that should have gotten more focus (the Big Week, the Invasion of Normandy, etc.) end up getting glossed over. You could do an entire series JUST on the Tuskegee Airmen alone. An additional episode could have helped a LOT. No one really knows what Wingate actually did during the War. If Crosby did, he didn't say anything in his book, so those scenes are pure speculation. The action in advance of the invasion was actually not that heavy. Losses were extremely light over France because the Luftwaffe had been devastated. Furthermore, the Allies engaged in an intense misdirection campaign to fool the Germans into believing the landing was taking place at Calais, rather than Normandy. Including an entire fake army (complete with inflatable tanks and aircraft!) assigned to Patton's command. Between this, and the intensifying bombing raids against Berlin, much of the surviving Luftwaffe units had been withdrawn to defend those areas. As a result, by the time the invasion actually DID began, the Germans had exactly TWO aircraft available in Normandy. A great movie that covers this is The Longest Day. The Tuskegee Airmen had a lot of myths develop about them during the War. One of the most prevalent is that they never lost a bomber they were escorting to enemy fighters. This was not the case, however they DID have a remarkably high survival rate out of all Allied escort groups. Despite the intense racial discrimination in the American armed forces at the time, (segregated air groups and infantry in the Army, along with Marine units, while Blacks in the Navy served entirely in support roles such as cooks, etc.) many of the white bomber crews developed considerable respect for them. You see this when the Tuskegee men arrive in the POW camp: Some of the other POWs weren't happy to have them there, but there's also a LOT of appreciation from the bomber crews they defended. And yes, one reason the Tuskegee men were ultimately accepted in the camps was because they could be reasonably sure they weren't Germans.
